Book excerpt: Join author Russell C. Shaddox as he tells the history of East Haddam in stunning images. Perched along the Connecticut River, much of East Haddam sits on land originally purchased from Native Americans in 1662 for 30 coats (about $100). From that modest beginning sprang a town whose residents became famous patriots, scholars, and explorers. Driven by industries common to 1700s river towns - lumber, agriculture, and shipbuilding - East Haddam spent the 19th century transforming into one of the area's largest manufacturers of cotton twine, netting, and fabric. Prosperity brought an influx of immigrants. As the 1900s dawned, many of the mills shuttered due to faltering demand, and the town turned to its natural beauty to attract a growing leisure class. Resorts of all varieties popped up in town, changing East Haddam from the "Twine Capital of America" to the "Catskills of Connecticut." The town was home to many prominent residents, including a governor, business magnates, fine artists, scholars, and popular stage actor William Gillette, who helped shape the iconic image of Sherlock Holmes. With the resorts in turn seeing a decline in the late 20th century, the town faced another wave of change. Still, with a deep history and a varied beauty that includes stunning forest, hilltop, and river views, East Haddam continues to captivate.

Book excerpt: Haddam: 1870–1930 recounts the story of a dynamic period in the history of Haddam. Spanning the Connecticut River some 16 miles from Long Island Sound, Haddam was founded in 1662. It soon became a shipping and administrative center. After the Civil War, the population stabilized, as in many rural New England localities. Shipping declined and the town lost its courthouse. Rejecting stagnation, the people of Haddam capitalized on their Connecticut River location and fast-running streams to develop industries as complements to agriculture and quarrying. This period of industrial expansion is exemplified by Clark Cutaway Harrow and the D & H Scovil Hoe Companies. The population also changed, as immigrants arrived and supported the economy and culture. Let Haddam: 1870–1930 lead you through a more exciting and vibrant time in an important community.

This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Chimney Stacks of East Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut This little book is largely a compilation and revision of serial chapters commenced by the author in the East Haddam Advertiser, in 1871, under the same title. It makes no pretensions to literary merit, and therefore has no claim upon the world at large. It is a brief record of the early history of East Haddam, and describes the prominent characters who figured therein, their toils, their perseverance, their homes - so many of which are represented by the old chimney piles dotted here and there all over the town. These numerous ruins of former homes suggested the work to the writer while taking the census of 1870. The information was gathered in fragments and this explains the fragmentary character of the work. It gives the genealogies of such old families as I have been able to obtain. That it may interest not only the present residents of the good old town, but the thousands who have wandered away and still claim it as their ancestral home, is the earnest wish of the Author. Excerpt: ...in East Haddam, who departed this life the 18th day of June, A. D., 1749, and in the 70th year of his age. And at his right hand lyeth Mrs. Sarah Hosmer, his beloved consort, who departed this life September ye 30th, A. D. 1749, and in the 67th year of her age. "Sweet souls we leave you to your rest, Enjoy your Jesus and your God, Till we from bands of clay released, Spring out and climb the shining road." Near this is another slab of brown stone with this inscription: "Here lieth the body of Thomas Gates, Justice of the Peace, April ye 20th, 1734, in ye 70th year of his age." Also, another slab recording the death of Dea. Daniel Brainerd, who died 1743." Beside this stands a handsome stone for those days, which has remained in a good state of preservation, and records the death of Capt. Joshua Brainard, who departed this life May the 13th, A. 1). 1755, in the 84th year of his age." In a line with this, stand rude brown stones which mark the graves of Nehimiah, Lucy, Uri and Hannah Brainard, and at the end of the line stands the only marble stones in the yard. They mark the graves of Bezaliel Brainard and I-ydia his wife. They were the grandparents of Wm. O. and Abby Brainard who own the ground. Here, too, is the resting place of the Cones, the Ackleys, Arnolds. Olmsteads and many old families of the town. A more-pleasant or romantic spot than this can hardly be found. Moodus and the Landings, instead of each having a cemetery, should have united and purchased this spot for a common burial ground. The distance from either place is convenient. Nature, history and tradition have already made it an interesting spot; it would only have needed the embellishments of art, to make it a retreat of which the town might...
