Book Anthony Tuckney 1599 1670

Download or read book Anthony Tuckney 1599 1670 written by Cho Youngchun and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youngchun Cho investigates the theology of Anthony Tuckney, an overlooked yet highly influential member of the Westminster Assembly. After a brief biography and an evaluation of Tuckney’s use of Scripture and reason, Cho shows how he related union with Christ to the doctrine of the Trinity, soteriology, and assurance of salvation. This book refutes claims that seventeenth-century Reformed theology in general, and the Westminster Standards in particular, pursued logical precision at the expense of the dynamic aspect of union with Christ, demonstrating that union with Christ was a critical element to Tuckney’s theological agenda. Series Description Complementing the primary source material in the Principal Documents of the Westminster Assembly series, the Studies on the Westminster Assembly provides access to classic studies that have not been reprinted and to new studies, providing some of the best existing research on the Assembly and its members.

Book Prophecy Piety and the Problem of Historicity

Download or read book Prophecy Piety and the Problem of Historicity written by Jan Stievermann and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Stievermann's pioneering study of Cotton Mather's Biblia Americana examines this Puritan scholar's engagement with the Hebrew Bible as Old Testament. The author focuses specifically on Mather's struggle to uphold or modify traditional typological and allegorical readings in the face of a growing awareness of the historicity of Scriptures. Other key issues include Mather's interventions in the contemporary debates over the legitimacy of Christian interpretations of the prophets, as well as over the authorship, provenance, genre, and spiritual import of texts such as Ecclesiastes and Canticles. Stievermann's book yields fascinating insights into an underappreciated phase of exegesis that was at once traditionalist and innovative, apologetically oriented, pious, and open to new modes of historical-textual criticism. Moreover, it shows how Mather's biblical exegesis fits into the broader development of Puritan theology and identity. --

Book excerpt: Taking advantage of the unprecedented access to books and information that has become available in the last few years, this bibliography identifies and traces the history of hundreds of books and articles on Ecclesiastes published in many different languages before 1875. It includes not just scholarly literature but exegetical sermons, homiletic works, and poetic paraphrases of the text in order to offer significantly more comprehensive coverage than in any earlier bibliography. The publication history of each work is outlined in detail, with brief discussions of the background or content where appropriate, cross-references are given to major bibliographies and bibliographical databases, and indexes of authors, publishers, and biblical references are provided. Intended to serve as an important resource not only for students of Ecclesiastes and for bibliographers but for all who are interested in the history of reception or interpretation of the Bible, this bibliography also includes coverage of many more general works on the Megillot, on the Old Testament, and on the Bible as a whole in this period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Qoheleth's vocabulary is the continuation of that on the grammar (OLA 41), published in 1992. All lexemes occurring in Qoh are examined for the specific connotations they have in this book. Chapter I deals with Biblical Hebrew words that are frequently and idiosyncratically used in Qoh. The subject of Chapter II are words that are less frequently used, yet can be considered to have some typical connotations in Qoh. Then follows in Chapter III the study of classical BH words that are less typical of Qoh, yet demand some attention. Chapter IV offers an analysis of the words that occur only in Qoh and in the last chapter, the reader finds short notes on the remaining words, those which require no special analysis. Throughout this monograph, attention is given to Late Biblical Hebrew, Aramaisms and Graecisms, in continuity with the grammatical studies in vol. I.

Book Time Religion and History

Download or read book Time Religion and History written by William Gallois and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is time? How does our sense of time lead us to approach the world? How did the peoples of the past view time? This book answers these questions through an investigation of the cultures of time in Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and the Australian Dreamtime. It argues that our contemporary world is blind as to the significance and complexity of time, preferring to believe that time is natural and unchanging. This is of critical importance to historians since the base matter of their study is time, yet there is almost no theoretical literature on time in history. This book offers the first detailed historiographical study of the centrality of time to human cultures. It sets out the complex ways in which ideas of time developed in the major world religions, and the manner in which such conceptions led people both to live in ways very different to our contemporary world and to make very different kinds of histories. It goes on to argue that modern scientific descriptions of time, such as Einsteins Theory of Relativity, lie much closer to the complex understandings of time in religions such as Christianity than they do to our common-sense notions of time which are centred on progress through a past, present and future.
