Book excerpt: Alchemy is a rich and complex esoteric tradition that has flourished world-wide since the beginning of recorded history, if not earlier. There are three main traditions: Western Christian, Indo-tibetan and Chinese Taoist. Within this diversity there are many common features, which are analysed, organized, and brought together in this comprehensive dictionary of terms, symbols, and personalities. This dictionary is the distillation of many years' research into the extensive arcane literature. It is a reference work to guide the readers throught the labyrinth of pre-Newtonian science and philosophy. The dictionary covers not only the materialist dimension of the search for the elixir of life and the transmutation of metals, but also the inner search for the gold of mystical illumination. Jung called alchemy 'the projection of a drama both cosmic and spiritual in laboratorty terms'. This opus alchymicum goes beyond the bare analysis and interpretation of terms to present a harmonic, integrated vision of man and nature, which may help to heal the fragmented world view of modern science.

Book Philalethe Reveal d Vol 2 B W

Download or read book Philalethe Reveal d Vol 2 B W written by Captain NEMO and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-12-28 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time the major work by Eyraeneus Philalethe Cosmopolita is disclosed to the reader of Alchemy as a comparative study on three original editions, supported by an historical survey about Elias Artista and the New World utopia. In the XVI century a bunch of fools dreamed to establish a new society, based on Mother Nature's knowledge; unfortunately, that dream failed to became true. Philalethe, one of those good men went back to his laboratory and to the ☿ of the Philosophers: he left us his Secrets Reveal'd. His work is a true masterpiece of Alchemy, extremely difficult to be properly understood by those who are not ready to leave logic, vanity, and lust for possession. Since the academic world presumes that the Ancient Art is just a junky forerunner of chemistry, we assumed that Philalethe, an alchemist, deserved to be studied and commented by operative alchemists. His teachings are outstanding, and no one will never be able to enter the Shut Palace of the King without Humility and Patience

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 400-year history of the development of alchemy in England that brings to light the evolution of the practice. In medieval and early modern Europe, the practice of alchemy promised extraordinary physical transformations. Who would not be amazed to see base metals turned into silver and gold, hard iron into soft water, and deadly poison into elixirs that could heal the human body? To defend such claims, alchemists turned to the past, scouring ancient books for evidence of a lost alchemical heritage and seeking to translate their secret language and obscure imagery into replicable, practical effects. Tracing the development of alchemy in England over four hundred years, from the beginning of the fourteenth century to the end of the seventeenth, Jennifer M. Rampling illuminates the role of alchemical reading and experimental practice in the broader context of national and scientific history. Using new manuscript sources, she shows how practitioners like George Ripley, John Dee, and Edward Kelley, as well as many previously unknown alchemists, devised new practical approaches to alchemy while seeking the support of English monarchs. By reconstructing their alchemical ideas, practices, and disputes, Rampling reveals how English alchemy was continually reinvented over the space of four centuries, resulting in changes to the science itself. In so doing, The Experimental Fire bridges the intellectual history of chemistry and the wider worlds of early modern patronage, medicine, and science.

Download or read book Gehennical Fire written by William R. Newman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-02-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the quest for natural knowledge and the aspiration to alchemical wisdom played crucial roles in the Scientific Revolution, as William R. Newman demonstrates in this fascinating book about George Starkey (1628-1665), America's first famous scientist. Beginning with Starkey's unusual education in colonial New England, Newman traces out his many interconnected careers—natural philosopher, alchemist, chemist, medical practitioner, economic projector, and creator of the fabulous adept, "Eirenaeus Philalethes." Newman reveals the profound impact Starkey had on the work of Isaac Newton, Robert Boyle, Samuel Hartlib, and other key thinkers in the realm of early modern science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biographical details for George Ripley (c.1415-c.1490), one of England's best-known alchemical authorities, are sketchy, but he is known to have travelled widely on the Continent in search of alchemical wisdom. Whilst a canon regular at the Augustinian priory at Bridlington in Yorkshire, he conducted alchemical experiments and wrote widely on the subject. Ripley's popular alchemical poem, The Compound of Alchemy, has survived in many manuscript versions, was first printed in 1591 with a dedication to Queen Elizabeth, and prompted many explications and commentaries during the two centuries following Ripley's death. Originally dedicated by Ripley to King Edward IV, the poem figures the King as a kind of alchemical aspirant who, having received instructions from Ripley, his alchemical master, is enabled to glimpse the arcane secrets of the art. The Compound of Alchemy is not only a treatise concerning mastery of the twelve stages of the alchemical process leading to the philosopher's stone, it is also a work of poetry composed in rhyme royal stanzas. This modern critical edition is based on the full text of the 1591 printed edition and is preceded by an introduction containing a chronology of Ripley's life, a survey of manuscripts, an analysis of the 1591 printed edition and its cultural context, and an examination of the ways in which Ripley's aims and objectives are closely linked to the work's verse format. The edition also contains a commentary, bibliography, index, and illustrations.
