Book FINDING SAVOONGA

Download or read book FINDING SAVOONGA written by Doris D. Ray and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEVER IN THEIR WILDEST DREAMS did the young couple imagine their teaching careers would begin in a remote Yupik Eskimo village on a desolate, icy, wind-swept island in the Bering Sea. It was 1951. On a whim, Charles “Tod” and his fiancé, Doris Derby, answer a help-wanted ad seeking teachers in Alaska. Back comes a telegram from the Bureau of Indian Affairs offering jobs 3,000 miles away in Savoonga, population 250, on St. Lawrence Island. The village had no airport, no roads, no telephones, and little contact with the outside world. The Rays arrive in a walrus skinboat. “Our lives have become so vastly different from anything we have ever experienced!” Doris writes her mother. Thus begins one of many candid, evocative letters Tod and Doris write describing their experiences being two of only three white people in the village … melting ice for water … teaching children who speak no English … forming close friendships with villagers who welcome them warmly … fighting a frightening measles epidemic … and receiving groceries by ship once a year while villagers hunt walrus for survival. Finding Savoonga is illustrated with 110 color photographs illustrating a self-sufficient, pre-industrial society subsisting on food from the sea.

Book excerpt: Lee S. Thomas spent his seventh birthday, in February 5 1891, watching the Spokane Falls from the immigrant car of the trans-continental railroad. In spring 1899, at the age of 15, Lee quit school, and started working as a skid greaser for a logging team. After his house burned to the ground at the age of 33, he moved with his bride and two-year-old daughter to Stockton, California, where his mechanical skills earned him a living as a carpenter, as a caterpillar driver, as the pilot of a passenger ferry and a freight barge, then finally, for seven years, as the foreman of a crew plowing and harvesting land in the swampy "tule" islands of the San Joaquin river Delta. In 1936, "we moved to Kent, near Seattle, with our accumulated household stuff in an ox-car and the old Holt 75 on a flat car." This autobiography was written 1946, typed 1970, digitized 2018.

Book Hard Driving

Download or read book Hard Driving written by Brian Donovan and published by Steerforth Press / Truth to Power. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only book-length account of the life of Wendell Scott, the one-time moonshine runner who broke the color barrier in stock-car racing in 1952 and, against all odds, competed for more than 20 years in a sport dominated by Southern whites. Hard Driving is the story of one man's determination to live the life he loved, and to compete at the highest level of his sport. When Wendell Scott became NASCAR's version of Jackie Robinson in the segregated 1950s, some speedways refused to let him race. Scott appealed directly to the sport's founder, NASCAR czar Bill France Sr., who promised that NASCAR would treat him without prejudice. For the next two decades, Scott chased a dream whose fulfillment depended on France backing up that promise. France reneged on his pledge, but Scott did receive inspiring support from white drivers who admired his skill and tenacity, such as NASCAR champions Ned Jarrett and Richard Petty.
