Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Lieutenant: Or, the Adventures of an Army Officer; A Story of Great Rebellion This volume is a sequel to "The Soldier Boy;" and, though the leading character is the same in both books, there is no necessary connection between them, each forming an independent story. The material for the work, so far as its historical relations are concerned, has been derived from authentic sources; not from books and papers only, but from intelligent and reliable persons who participated in the stirring scenes of which they gave testimony. The author especially acknowledges his indebtedness to Captain William V. Munroe, late of the Eleventh Massachusetts Regiment, for details of the Peninsular Campaign; and to Captain Henry N. Blake, author of "Three Years in the Army of the Potomac," for valuable information relative to the movements of General Hooker's Division. Like "The Soldier Boy," this book is a narrative of personal adventure, rather than a connected historical account of the operations before Richmond; though, so far as positions and movements of the army are introduced, they are based upon reliable information. The school has been emptied of all its old scholars, and Ned's name has perished from the play ground, its only memorial being the initials on the big tree, with their once fresh lines, now swollen and deformed with the ten years' growth of the bark. Some of the old scholars have gone to their graves, and some to the ends of the earth. The old school master, Mr. Mair, has also passed away, and the cross-coat is seen no more, though there is a tradition that it remained for several years after his death, as a scarecrow and terror to young birds in his suc cessor's garden. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tanner-Boy: A Life of General U. S, Grant The reader will find this to be not a mere child's book. It is designed mainly for the boys of America, but not for them exclusively. The boyhood of Lieu tenant-general ulysses sidney grant, of the United States Army, is depicted at length in its pages, for the purpose of showing, by the record of his youthful history, how much the characteristics of the boy are developed in the man. The boyhood of george washington, under the guidance of his judicious parents, was a key to much of his future career. These pages will prove that it has been the same with Gen. Grant. The book, however, is not confined to the youth of the tanner-boy. It follows him through his manhood, depicts all the leading events of his life, and shows, by the concurrent testimony of history, the gradual steps of progress by which he has become Lieutenant General. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Lieutenant and His Son, Vol. 1 Why should a man, who is 'some fifty, ' apolo gize to the public for beginning to tell stories? Is not this a very common phenomenon 'at his time of life?' I have indeed no good reason to give for writing this tale, except one - which, after all, is no reason, but the mere statement of a fact, that I could not help it! When I began to write about the Old Lieutenant, it was my intention merely to occupy a chapter or two of Good Words with a life-sketch gathered from memories of the past. But the sketch grew upon me. Persons, and things, and scenes, came crowding out of the darkness; and while I honestly wished to mould them for practical good, I felt all the while more possessed by them than possessing them. My own half-creations became my tyrants; and so I was driven on, and on, from chapter to chapter, until. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Scout: The Story of a West Point Lieutenant One warm summer afternoon, a half dozen boys on their way home from the Burkville School, stopped to rest under the trees, which afforded a grateful shade at the side of the dusty highway. No matter how tired such a lot of youngsters may be, they are sure to be brimming over with mischief, and on the alert for boisterous amusement. To picture them seated quiet, thoughtful and well behaved is to picture what was never seen. No such an occurrence is on record or within the memory of the oldest inhabitant. Read it at once” (The Sunday Times, UK). A stunning follow-up to her Commonwealth Writers’ Prize-winning book, The Secret River, Grenville’s The Lieutenant is a gripping story of friendship, self-discovery, and the power of language set along the unspoiled shores of 1788 New South Wales, Australia. As a boy, Daniel Rooke was an outsider. Ridiculed in school for his intellect and misunderstood by his parents, he finds a path for himself in the British Navy—and in his love for astronomy. As a young lieutenant, Daniel joins a voyage to Australia. And while his countrymen struggle to control their cargo of convicts and communicate with nearby Aboriginal tribes, Daniel constructs an observatory to chart the stars and begin the work he prays will make him famous. Out on his isolated point, Daniel becomes involved with the local Aborigines, forging an intimate connection with one girl that will change the course of his life. But when his compatriots come into conflict with the indigenous population, Daniel must turn away from the stars and declare his loyalties on the ground.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Lieutenant's Story, Vol. 1 of 3 In putting forth another "Religious Novel," I would fain say a few words in - not excuse - but justification of such works; being aware that many excellent persons object to them. It was through "Fiction" that our Lord conveyed many of His heavenly truths; introducing even supposititious appeals to God, and prayers for His mercy; and surely we cannot be wrong in venturing to follow his steps! But it is the "Love" I am aware that is most objected to; but that objection I should like to be allowed to meet by repeating a few words of conversation on the subject, which proved effectual with a young "objecting" clergyman. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Taylor Adams (July 30, 1822 - March 27, 1897), pseudonym Oliver Optic, was a noted academic, author, and a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Adams first began to write at the age of 28, and his first book, Hatchie, the Guardian Slave (1853), was published under the pseudonym of Warren T. Ashton. It was only a modest success, but Adams was undaunted. In 1854 Adams produced his first real hit, the initial volume in the Boat Club series. Among his best-known works were the two "Blue and Gray" series, which were set during the Civil War. Adams wrote well over 100 books in total, most of them for a boy audience, and the majority of these in series of four to six volumes.

Book The Life of Lieutenant General Chaffee Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Lieutenant General Chaffee Classic Reprint written by William Harding Carter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lieutenant General Chaffee General Chaffee was one of two million young men and boys who during the fratricidal conflict volun teered with only one thought - to save the Union. The vast majority of them have gone to their tombs, and the Grim Reaper, from whom none escapes, is rapidly gathering the survivors to their last bivouac. The world goes on, and the kaleidoscopic course of modern events seems to leave no time for reflection upon the deeds of those young patriots, yet their fame and glory are secure in the hearts of the nation, and the story of their achievements will survive when all the bronze and marble monuments now standing to mark their conquering pathway in war have crumbled to dust and passed back to Mother Earth. We are coming more and more to recognize that truthful history of the great forward movements which have characterized the nation's rise and progress is best deduced from the journals, diaries, and reports of the men who have rendered the state some service. General Chaffee's life was an open book to his comrades, but now that he and they have passed over the great divide it is no easy matter to uncover the earlier trail of half a century and to do justice to his modest, fear less, and successful career.
