Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the latest volume in a major series that describes selections of the rare books, manuscripts, and other works of art held at Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Rachel Lambert Mellon. The 111 items chosen for this volume on floral illustration since the later Middle Ages include Books of Hours, still-life and vanitas paintings, botanical prints, and books of instruction of every kind, from planting a garden to making flowers using colored papers or wax. Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi groups the works into chapters on such topics as florilegia, women artists, tulipomania, Dutch and Flemish painting, and exotic flowers from distant lands, providing an introduction to each chapter that gives the contextual background necessary for a real understanding and appreciation of floral illustration past and present. The sheer beauty as well as extraordinary skills encountered, for example, in manuscript florilegia by Jacob Marrel and Maria Sibylla Merian, in hand-colored books by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues and G.B. Ferrari, and in flower studies painted by John Constable, Margaret Mee, and others, are testament to the high status accorded floral illustration over the centuries. This handsome, richly illustrated volume will attract all those with an interest in rare books and the history of art as well as horticulturalists, botanists, and garden historians.

Book Fashion and Popular Print in Early Modern England

Download or read book Fashion and Popular Print in Early Modern England written by Clare Backhouse and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-30 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fashion featured in black-letter broadside ballads over a hundred years before fashion magazines appeared in England. In the seventeenth century, these single-sheet prints contained rhyming song texts and woodcut pictures, accessible to almost everyone in the country. Dress was a popular subject for ballads, as well as being a commodity with close material and cultural connections to them. This book analyses how the distinctive words and images of these ballads made meaning, both in relation to each other on the ballad sheet and in response to contemporary national events, sumptuary legislation, religious practice, economic theory, the visual arts and literature. In this context, Clare Backhouse argues, seventeenth-century ballads increasingly celebrated the proliferation of print and fashionable dress, envisioning new roles for men and women in terms of fashion consumption and its importance to national prosperity. The book demonstrates how the hitherto overlooked but extensive source material that these ballads offer can enrich the histories of dress, art and culture in early modern England.

  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book Leonardo Da Vinci written by Leonardo (da Vinci) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1983 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable manuscript is almost 500 years old and was hand-written in Italian by Leonardo da Vinci in his characteristic "mirror writing" and supported by copious sketches. It covers a wide range of his observations and theories on astronomy, the properties of water, rocks, fossils, air, and celestial light. The Codex Leicester provides a rare insight into the inquiring mind of the definitive Renaissance artist, scientist, and thinker as well as an exceptional illustration of the link between art and science and the creativity of the scientific process. Each delicate page is faithfully reproduced and accompanied by an insightful interpretation of the original Italian texts by the foremost Leonardo scholar, Professor Carlo Pedretti. There is also an introductory essay by Michael Desmond.
