Not even chirping birds fill the silence left behind in this godforsaken land put into eternal sleep. The land of the Emniths is trapped in the past and long forgotten by the deities and the humans alike. It is home to humans who looked like the ones in Fayr once but turned dark and sinister after years in the night. Their hearts blackened and their souls full of desire and lust for the forbidden. When Hain is about to approach the dwellers of the night, he finds himself being dragged away by someone who tells him to run into the forest and never look back. But why should Hain trust a stranger who appeared as stealthy as air and forced him to hide?

Book The City of the Goneaway

Download or read book The City of the Goneaway written by Ambrose Bierce and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AMBROSE BIERCE - The City of the Goneaway - and 67 other stories of the supernatural and the weird. Before he trailed off into the wilds of Mexico, never to be heard from again, Ambrose Bierce achieved a public persona as ""bitter Bierce"" and ""the devil's lexicographer."" He left behind a nasty reputation and more than ninety short stories that are perfect expressions of his sardonic genius. The stories in this volume represent an unprecedented accomplishment in American literature. In their iconoclasm and needle-sharp irony, their formal and thematic ingenuity and element of surprise, they differ markedly from the fiction admired in Bierce's time.

Book excerpt: Perry Shepherd, Earl of Brentwood, presents himself to Society as a bit of a fribble; carefree, fairly indolent, and bored to flinders by anything remotely political. But appearances can deceive, because scratch that polished surface and the real Perry appears, an invaluable and rather ruthless covert asset to England during the late war with Bonaparte. Perry ignores the reappearance of Princess Caroline, consort of the new King George IV…until his wily uncle orders him to ferret out information that would make it possible for the new king to divorce his unwanted, blowsy, and rather audacious spouse before he is forced to crown her as his Queen. Left with no options, Perry decides the way to the Princess is through her most trusted ally, Amelia Fredericks. A little charm, a few of his winning smiles sprinkled in with a touch of flattery to the girl, and, well, as one of his new acquaintances is known to say, “Bob’s your uncle.” Except that Amelia is so sincere, so trustworthy, so devoted to Caroline…and it’s possible that both she and princess are in grave danger. Now Perry has a problem: how does he tell the truth to the woman he’s been lying to even as he falls in love with her? Don't miss the book that precedes this story, featuring Morgan Drummond: The Butler Did It “Michaels truly shines in this gem of a historical romance rich in witty dialogue and intriguing political maneuverings.” -- Review by Patty Engelmann; American Library Association.

Book An Ambrose Bierce Companion

Download or read book An Ambrose Bierce Companion written by Robert L. Gale and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 2001-03-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambrose Bierce was born in 1842 and mysteriously disappeared in 1914. During his lifetime, he was a controversial and prolific writer, and there is growing interest in his works. As a Union soldier during the Civil War, he witnessed bloodshed and the atrocities of battle. After the war, he began a career as a journalist in San Francisco, where many of his newspaper columns were filled with venom and daring. In addition, he wrote war stories and tales of the supernatural, along with an assortment of poems. Today, he is probably best remembered as the author of The Devil's Dictionary, originally published as The Cynic's Dictionary in 1906. This reference is a guide to his life and writings. An opening essay overviews Bierce's contribution to literature and journalism, and a chronology summarizes the most important events in his life. The bulk of the Companion comprises alphabetically arranged entries on Bierce's major works and characters and on historical persons and writers who figured prominently in his life and career. Thus the volume provides coverage of Bierce's contemporaries, many of whom he satirized in his scathing newspaper columns. Many of the entries list works for further reading, and the book closes with a selected, general bibliography. Because of Bierce's concern with so many issues of his day, the volume offers a valuable perspective on American culture during the time in which he lived.
