Book excerpt: A bottom trawl survey was conducted from August 29 to September 6, 2017, to estimate density and infer abundance of Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi in Kachemak Bay within the Southern District of the Cook Inlet Area. The survey was conducted aboard ADF&G's research vessel Pandalus using a 400-mesh Eastern otter trawl (large-mesh trawl). The survey caught 1,481 male Tanner crab of which 137 (9%) were of legal size (114 mm carapace width or greater) to produce a mean CPUE of 10.13 crab/nmi (CV = 0.52) and yielded an abundance estimate of 124,965 legal crab. Legal male Tanner crab were caught at 11 of the 38 stations with 90% of the total legal males caught at only 5 stations. The survey caught 1,350 female Tanner crab of which 348 (26%) were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 24.08 crab/nmi (CV = 0.50) and yielded an abundance estimate of 297,126 mature crab. Abundance estimates of legal male and mature female Tanner crab were well below the long-term average of the survey time series.

The survey was conducted aboard the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) research vessel Pandalus using a 400-mesh Eastern otter trawl (large-mesh trawl). In 2018, the survey caught 12,568 male Tanner crab of which 348 were of legal size, ≥114mm (4.5 in), to produce a mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) of 18.06 legal-size crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 222,852 legal-size crab. In 2019, the survey caught 1,682 male Tanner crab of which 421 were of legal size to produce a mean CPUE of 22.17 legal-size crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 273,511 legal-size crab. The 2017, 2018, and 2019 survey results produced a 3-year mean of 207,109 legal-size male crab which allowed the standard noncommercial fisheries to occur for the 2019–2020 season. In 2018, the survey caught 4,193 female Tanner crab of which 1,566 were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 82.25 mature female crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 1,014,869 mature female crab. In 2019, the survey caught 2,660 female Tanner crab of which 2,295 were mature to produce a mean CPUE of 120.66 mature female crab/nmi and yielded an abundance estimate of 1,488,880 mature female crab. Abundance estimates of legal-size male Tanner crab were slightly above the long-term mean, and mature female Tanner crab were substantially above the long-term mean of the survey time series.

Book excerpt: A large-mesh bottom trawl survey of Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi was conducted in 2020 in the Prince William Sound Area (PWSA; Registration Area E) with the objective of establishing protocols for generating Tanner crab abundance estimates for a newly established survey area. New survey areas in PWSA were developed to assess new commercial fishery districts that were proposed at the 2021 Alaska Board of Fisheries meeting. Proposed fishery districts encompass historical fishing areas and areas fished in the recent commissioner’s permit fishery. Methodology from the historical PWSA trawl survey was applied to develop new trawl stations with the goal of calculating catch per unit effort (CPUE) to estimate abundance of historical legal size and legal-size male Tanner crab in the surveyed area. The 2020 survey produced a CPUE for male Tanner crab that were of the historical legal size of 28.4 crab per nmi2, which was the third lowest observation for any Alaska Department of Fish and Game trawl survey in the PWSA. The estimated abundance of historical legal-size male Tanner crab was 8,214 crab in the survey area, and the estimated abundance for legal-size male Tanner crab was 35,920 crab in the survey area.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes bottom trawl survey data used to assess Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi abundance within the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Central Region. Trawl surveys replaced pot surveys as the primary method of assessing Tanner crab in Central Region in the early 1990s. Data for the Central Region were collected from 2 management districts in the Lower Cook Inlet Management Area: 1) the Southern District (1990-2013), and 2) the Kamishak Bay and Barren Islands Districts (1990-2012). Data were also collected from the Prince William Sound Management Area (1991-2015). Since 1993 in the Southern District, and 1990 in the Kamishak Bay and Barren Islands Districts, the estimated abundance of legal male Tanner crab has not exceeded the minimum stock size threshold defined in regulation that is necessary to open a commercial fishery (Alaska Administrative Code 5 AAC 35.408). Bottom trawl survey methods have changed through the history of the survey and those changes are documented in this report. Abundance trends of legal and sublegal male and female Tanner crab are also described along with trends in recruitment. Analysis and harvest strategy recommendations to create a management plan for commercial and noncommercial Tanner crab fisheries in the Prince William Sound Management Area are presented.

These data will be used to estimate population abundances for the management of commercially important species in the region. In 2007, 376 standard stations were surveyed and an additional 32 stations were resampled in Bristol Bay at the end of the standard survey due to the offset in timing of the survey and the reproductive maturity of the female red king crab. The point estimate of Bristol Bay red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) legal-sized male abundance was 6% greater in 2007 than 2006, and exceeded the average of 9.6 million crab for the previous 20 years. The point estimate of Pribilof District blue king crab (P. platypus) legal-sized male abundance was 0.1 million crab, which was well below the average of 0.6 million for the previous 20 years. The point estimate of Tanner crab (Chionoecetes bairdi) legal-sized male abundance was 12.1 million crab which is a decrease of 6% from 2006. The point estimate of the large male snow crab (C. opilio) abundance was 495.2 ± 134.8 million crab.

Book excerpt: Exploratory bottom trawl hauls were conducted by Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) in areas of the South Peninsula Tanner crab management district previously unsurveyed by ADF&G large-mesh bottom trawl surveys to assess the presence of commercially important crab and groundfish species. Funding was provided by the Aleutians East Borough. Trawl hauls were conducted in Unimak Bight in 2013 and 2014, southwest of Kupreanof Peninsula in 2015, and west of Cherni Island in 2015 and 2016. Trawl hauls were evaluated for species catch composition, abundance estimates of commercially important crabs, and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of commercially important groundfish. The estimated legal male Tanner crab Chionoecetes bairdi abundance was low in each of the three areas and arrowtooth flounder Atheresthes stomias and flathead sole Hippoglossoides elassodon dominated the groundfish catch. The sizes of Tanner crab captured from these areas were similar to sizes of crab captured from nearby annually surveyed areas, but the number of crab captured was lower in Unimak Bight and Cherni Island and higher southwest of Kupreanof Peninsula. Based on 2013-2016 survey data, inclusion of these exploratory survey areas would not substantially change the abundance estimate of Tanner crab in the South Peninsula District.
