Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of the Wye Castles, churches, abbeys and shrines to be met with from day to day; and shall recall to the memory of those who pass by the valiant men who lived of old, built and defended or took the castles, used and endowed the churches, dwelt in the abbeys, and worshipped at the shrines. I have also recalled here and there an old song and fought again a lost fight. All this is no great matter, and I shall be amply repaid for my part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tower of Wye: A Romance Once upon a time a newspaper item told me of certain discoveries made long before on Wye island, a fertile broken-off piece of Queen Anne's County, Maryland, which has been known also as Chew's, Paca's or Bordley's island after successive owners. When occasion offered, I drove down there with a friend, who had previously taken me on a similar trip to Kent Fort Manor where Claiborne planted his colony. The exact site of the Wye tower could not be identified, but we found in the river bank a hollow where a tunnel had issued, and, over on the mainland a few miles away, one of the excavators, who "minded" very well the digging, if not quite "the bigging o't." He described it as "brick-lined and Hg enough to roll a hogshead through," ending inland among the foundation piles and pillars of some building which had passed away. He did not recall a second passage running to the other shore, and I am not sure of his testimony as to the wall across the island; but we came upon remnants of the latter, as we thought. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tourist's Guide to the Wye and Its Neighbourhood A cam and portable guide-book seems a fitting accompaniment to a cheap tour; and the Editor has endeavoured to produce one which shall fulfil this purpose, while it directs the attention of the traveller to all that is worth seeing. Superfluous description has been avoided, the object of the work being merely to denote the leading points, and thus not to encumber the tourist with unnecessary remarks which entail a more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sins of the Fathers: Or the Wye Valley Mystery On the crest of a hill just beyond the northern suburbs of the city of Leeds stood a substantially built house known as Thomcliffe Hall It was approached through an avenue of elms from the lodge gates, which were on the side of the main road leading into Wharfedale. No one passing by would have imagined that just beyond the belt of the thick hawthorn hedge, shrubbery, and trees - in summer-time white with the dust raised by passing motor-cars - there was such a delightful residence, or that from it such a magnificent view of the surrounding country could be obtained. The stables, kitchens, and the vegetable garden were between the house and the road, so that the noise of the traffic was scarcely heard by the occupants of the Hall. The grounds were tastefully laid out and well kept, falling in terraces southwards towards a valley in which nestled an old-time village. When visitors entered Thomcliffe Hall they were impressed with the skill, elegance, and good taste everywhere displayed - in decorations, furniture, and even in the arrangement of the bric-a-brac. The general effect was pleasing and restful. There was nothing loud or gaudy, nothing to suggest extravagance, nothing to irritate or jar, but an air of culture and refinement in every room. This was the home of John Moorhouse, the head of one of the largest engineering firms in the North of England It had been the home of two generations of the family. It was in the first place a plain, square, stone-walled structure, built by the first Moorhouse, the founder of the prosperous firm of Moorhouse and Son.
