Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Light Verse No one who reads through the following pages carefully can fail to be struck with the modern characteristics of much old poetry which age cannot wither. It is often impossible to realize, for instance, that Prior has been dead for nearly two centuries. Not only may the reader say I could have written that but also 'it might have been written yesterday Sir Arthur quiller-couch has noted how constantly and curiously J onson, especially in the Underwoods, seems to anticipate the best and something more than the best, manner of Browning especially mentioning The Triumph of Charis as a case in point. Book An Anthology of Light Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Anthology of Light Verse Classic Reprint written by Louis Kronenberger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology of Light Verse If this be conceded, the reason why so much of our best light verse was written three centur1es 'ago 13 not hard to explain. For in those days poets by the dozen wrote with pleasure and gusto and from a comic standpoint about sex; and sex is Obviously one Of a very few topics that have any permanent interest for mankind. The approach to sex that these poets used was perfect for achieving the right mood and accent: they were at once courtly and downright; they mirrored with both realism and grace. The worldliness of city life and the high sp1r1ts Of the countryside; they brought to their experiences a Witty and mobile imagination; for all their high romantic notions they were shrewd about women and amused rather than heartbroken over the quick passing and illusoriness Of physical love. And they were not high falutin: they knew that though they made love with words, they made love with their bodies as well. The result, in scores of cases, was good poetry - and good light verse. Book A Little Book of Light Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Little Book of Light Verse Classic Reprint written by Anthony C. Deane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Book of Light Verse Nique. Indeed, the average man' hardly realises that there is any technique to study. He does not see that light verse is'a distinct and separate art; but'dismisses the best of those who practise it - Mr Austin Dobson, for example - as 'minor poets.' The truth is that Mr Dobson is not a minor po'et at all, but a master of light verse writing; his achievements in his own field are as superior to the light verse of Robert Browning, as are that author's serious poems to the efforts of a light verse writer attempting serious poetry. And it is rather strange that in the country which, if it has not been prolific of good light versifiers, has produced a few who are incomparably good, one still should have to point out that these are true masters of a distinct and separate art, and not persons who merely wrote light verse because they were incapable of turning out the third-rate sonnets, and lyrics which the publicfis prepared to revere as poetry.' Nor is it the public only which is to blame.= Criticism, on the whole (i say this with the fear of Mr Churton Collins upon me 1) is, in respect of every Other branch of literature, often able, and nearly always competent. But the ordi nary criticism received by the writer of light verse is hopelessly inept. First, he is fairly certain to be told that he is 'a disciple of Calverley, ' not because he follows the Calverleyan methods, but merely because he-has written verse designedly. Book W H Auden s Book of Light Verse

Download or read book W H Auden s Book of Light Verse written by W. H. Auden and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2004-07-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auden's celebrated anthology of light verse is packed with surprising finds while also offering a striking rethinking of the poetic canon. Commissioned by Oxford University Press in the 1930s, when Auden's own work was at its boldest, the book caught its original publisher off guard. For it is less a collection of humorous verses than a celebration of the popular voice in English, in which the work of great satirists like Swift and Byron keeps company with ballads, chanteys, ditties, nursery rhymes, street calls, bathroom graffiti, epitaphs, folk songs, vaudeville turns, limericks, and blues. Turning away from the post-Romantic cult of the sentimental lyric, Auden features poetry that is clear, enjoyable, and, no matter its age, absolutely modern. This new edition includes previously censored poems, together with Auden's remarkable introduction and a new preface by his literary executor, Edward Mendelson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. May all my passion's unrelenting ires With Beauty's loveliest be ever crowned, Ne'er linking emptiness with honeyed sound, Nor any thought save that which high aspires. Book A Book of Greek Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Greek Verse Classic Reprint written by Walter George Headlam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Greek Verse And thus, if made discreetly, they should be able to reflect some counter-light on Greek itself. Only, we must use discrimination, and take care that what we choose for rendering into Greek shall really bear the stamp of Greek in style and sentiment. Not seldom one may see Greek made to say what certainly it never would have said, and to compose in metres which no Greek would ever have adopted for the purpose; for the Greeks were peculiarly sensitive to propriety of metre. However great their skill of execution, such performances are valueless, because they are artistically wrong; indeed they may be worse than valueless, because misleading. Now I will take occasion to make some remarks upon translating from the Greek in general. Not a few of these originals have been described as 'untranslatable.' It is a term that piques one - but I think it is applied too readily; and once applied, a term like that is apt to be repeated lightly and become a superstition. There is a sense, of course, in which everything is untranslatable. A man may write what is as good, or even better than the original, but from the nature of the case it cannot ever be precisely the same thing; and there are even moments when one feels it something of a desecration to translate at all. But that is surely overscrupulous, a weakness which, if all had yielded to it, would certainly have left the world - imagine how much poorer! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strife of Life: A Book of Modern Verse About this time another German reader found it somewhat of a task to determine that this poet was a non-entity. He de clared concerning a certain poem about Buddha and Christ, later admired by Theologians and others, that the author of these verses, since a layman, could have no knowledge of theological wisdom and should therefore humbly permit only profes sional men to write verses on religious themes. Verily, a fine literary standpoint, concerning which I need add nothing in refutation! Among the things which the reverend gentleman did not know was the fact, though it was unimportant and non-essential! That the writer of that German book of verses happened to be indeed a colleague and a theolog, a young doctor of phisosophy, who had studied theology at home and abroad for some years, and was therefore not unversed with his theme, having devoted special studies to comparative religions and studied oriental wisdom in the original tongue. Though one thing, to be sure, had been neglected. Had the poet signed his double title, and legitimately made his professional bow, everything would have been different. As it was, there naturally appeared on the title-page only the simple and unknown name cf an obscure little light, if light at all.
