Book British Consciousness and Identity

Download or read book British Consciousness and Identity written by Brendan Bradshaw and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-18 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical resonances of the concept of 'Britain' for the communities of the Atlantic Archipelago in the early modern period are explored here in terms of the ideological demands made upon it. Various and competing concepts of Britishness are examined, from the Henrician legislation which united Wales with England and which created the kingdom of Ireland, to the Act of Union of the realms of England and Scotland. The chequered history of the consciousness of Britain as a polity which embraced the united kingdoms is discussed in relation to the distinctive national identities of the constituent countries, and the question of the impact of 'Britain' on English policy-making under the Tudor, Stuart and the first Hanoverian monarchs is addressed. The puzzling resistance of the Irish to assimilation in contrast to the docility of the Welsh and - eventually - of the Scots is also explored.

Book excerpt: The reforming movements of the 16th century were constantly being attacked by Rome for breaking the unity of the Apostolic Church. To counter these accusations the reformers turned to qustions of tradition, history and identity in order to define and express the religious, politicla and social ideals of their movement. Though this debate was carried on with great vigour and spawned an enormous corpus of literature, a unifying concept of Protestant identity proved elusive; the process produced only divergent theological conclusions and conflicting social and political goals.

Book Catholics Anglicans and Puritans

Download or read book Catholics Anglicans and Puritans written by Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper and published by . This book was released on 1989-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five completely new essays in this volume together form a a major work of intellectual history by the most distinguished historian of the English seventeenth century. Their setting is England and Ireland, their theme the intellectual and religious movements which lay behind the Puritan revolution. "Laudianism and Political Power", the prodigious centrepiece, is now the best account we have of its subject . . . Yet Trevor-Roper is more accomplished still in the longish essay on the small or at least slenderly documentated and reclusive figure or question. So the most enthralling piece in this collection in on the obscure English atomist Nicholas Hill, just as the author's most satisfying book is The Hermit of Peking. -- Patrick Collinson, Times Literary Supplement.
