Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostle Paul's negative statements about the law have deafened the ears of many to the grace that Moses proclaims in Deuteronomy. Most Christians have a dim view of this book, which they consider to be primarily a book of laws. However, when we read or hear it read orally without prejudice, we discover that rather than casting Moses as a legislator, he appears as Israel's first pastor, whose congregation has gathered before him to hear him preach his final sermons. Accordingly, Deuteronomy represents prophetic preaching at its finest, as Moses seeks to inspire the people of God to a life of faith and godliness in response to God's repeated demonstrations of grace. Deuteronomy is a dead book for many, because we have not recognized this gospel; we have heard only law. The essays in this collection arise from a larger project driven by a passion to recover for Christians the life-giving message of the Hebrew Scriptures in general, and to open their ears to God's amazing grace in Deuteronomy in particular. The wide-ranging "meditations" in this volume do not all focus equally on the topic of God's grace, but this theme undergirds them all.

After immigrating from Mexico when she was nine years old, she's content with the life she's made for herself in sunny San Diego. She works hard at her mother's housecleaning service by day and spends the evenings with her quirky eight-year-old daughter, Grace. From a very young age, Emory Owen had several concepts drilled into her head. Success is everything. Be the best. Fight your way to the top. Expectations were high in the Owen household and the world was watching. Born into a high society family, Emory never wanted for anything...at least anything money could buy. When she meets Sarah, hired to sort her mother's home, her sterile life suddenly sparks into color. But when the emotional logistics of combining two very different worlds proves to be too much, a terrifying turn of events spurs the question: If love exists, can it really find a way?

Book Every Time We Say Goodbye

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1942: Her mother's death left Grace Turner detached from the world until she became pregnant. Now, she's fallen in love with her baby boy but is locked in combat with her sister-in-law over his care. Wanting an independent life for herself and her son, Grace leaves Sault Ste. Marie to find work, and a place of her own, in southern Ontario. But she worries: when she returns for her baby, will her brother and sister-in-law give him up? 1957: Teenaged Dean Turner breaks open a locked box and finds adoption papers with a birth certificate for Daniel Turner, son of Grace Turner and an unknown father. His parents deny that he is adopted, but four years later, Dean leaves home to find the mysterious Grace. 1961: Laura falls in love with Dean Turner soon after he sits down at her table in the Queen Street Eaton's cafeteria, but he disappears as suddenly and as devastatingly as he appeared. When she encounters him in Sault Ste. Marie three years later, she is determined not to let him slip away again. 1973: Eight-year-old Dawn Turner waits for her father one morning at the front door of her grandparents' house. Dawn and her little brother are finally starting a life with their father, Dean, and his new wife. But when the new beginning doesn't work out, she and Jimmy end up back with their grandparents. As Dawn grows up, she must work to understand her family's mysteries and disappearing acts before she loses track of herself completely. Jamie Zeppa paints a tender and perceptive portrait of the unconventional, though not entirely dysfunctional, Turner family. Rich with mystery, broken promises and in the end, some mending of hearts, Every Time We Say Goodbye explores what it means to leave, to be left, to be absent; what connects parents and children, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives - and what drives them apart.

Book Elgan and Grace

    Book Details:
  • Author : L E Taylor
  • Publisher : FriesenPress
  • Release : 2012-05
  • ISBN : 1770678417
  • Pages : 461 pages

Download or read book Elgan and Grace written by L E Taylor and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twilight of his life, a son examines fragments of his family's moral trek through the played-out century. Historically authentic settings and mores rekindle the past: backwoods Kentucky... a booming young Detroit... anti-German hostility during The Great War... whiskey-running and speakeasies... twists of fortune after The Crash... the Machiavellian inner sanctums of the world's largest industry... the World War II American home front... sea-changes in society and in private lives that accompanied Post-War normalcy. Gradually, the saga coheres on the pathways of its two protagonists: Elgan, a complex, introspective Southern boy whose demons drive him to escape a numbing poverty of the coal fields for a new identity; Grace, the stalwart city girl, paternally orphaned at seven, a realist making the best of a damaged life with irony and industry. The pathways to faith are badly marked and studded with mines. The pilgrim, however brave, is often his own greatest obstacle. Elgan and Grace is one man's witness to what really happened. It is written with passion, literary care, and good humor, for these times and for the generations that come next.
