Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Blessed Big Day brings together more than fifty years of Ralph Brown's Christmas poems. These poems arise from a variety of places, cultures and circumstances. But while the subject matter of these verses spans the globe from villages of southern Pakistan to the woods of Royalston, Massachusetts, and ranges across an emotional scale from exhilaration to deep pain, they all reflect the transcendent joy, faith and reverence of an author who knows Jesus as God Incarnate, and who can write with confidence: If Christmas means what one can do Or is shaped by good health or clime Then the essence of Christmas remains With man and the fortunes of time. These poems also testify to an American poetic tradition, a tradition fading but still alive, which treats poetry not just as the property of literary professionals, but also as an expression of the every day lives, thought and experience of ordinary people. This is the tradition reflected in Best Loved Poems of the American People, and like that anthology, Ralph Brown's poems, often written hastily in the midst of the demands of work and circumstances, encourage us to keep alive the work of the everyday "rhymester."

Book Portrait of an American Rabbi in His Own Words

Download or read book Portrait of an American Rabbi in His Own Words written by Rabbi Lance J. Sussman Ph.D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In short, I believe, a little bit of religion is a good thing whether or not you fully embrace the idea of God. I believe that Judaism should accept this approach and help its adherents translate their deep, inherent religious needs with the symbols and practices of our ancient tradition. Judaism understands that not only does it have to adapt as part of its cultural dance, but it also has to choose and to create in order to complete its mission: to help modern Jews, the children of Spinoza, and the disciples of Einstein, to stay on course, to see the poetry written into the cosmos, and to help one another on the road to contentment with kindness, with concern and with love. Every once in a while, somebody comes to me and says: “Rabbi, I’m so glad I’m Jewish.” “Rabbi, I’m lucky. I have what I need. I have what I want.” And I smile and count my blessings, too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Blessing of Sunshine" traces one woman's journey virtually from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. This true story touches upon diverse challenges of an abandoned infant that was adopted by a wonderful elderly couple. This couple had a very strict, stern religious belief. They also had raised a large group of children that had already left the nest. The empty nest put all the focus on Susan and the pressures of being the perfect Christian child. This rigid religious controlled childhood made it seem impossible to be happy, and left many questions not allowed to be answered, as children were to be seen and not heard The stress and pressure was more than she could take. She was always afraid she would not be worthy of going to heaven or being in the rapture if Jesus returned to earth. Susan Gore was born in the United Sates, where she has spent her entire life. She was abandoned by her birth mother and adopted by an elderly couple that had already raised eight children and had grandchildren. Per her Adoptive mother's wishes she married, graduated from high school, become a hair dresser, worked as a stylist for a few years, became a mother, and then changed careers to the business world. Still not fulfilled and after experiencing some unusual phenomena, she discovered the healing arts. In 2001 she attained a second degree certification in Reiki, the Usui System of Natural Healing. She began working with energy healing and experienced many healings of her own. Brought up in a strict protestant environment, later in life she discovered the Universe doesn't look at the names of religions or rules at all, it's what inside the mind, heart and spirit that matters.
