From Andrea (strong and manly) and Douglas (black water) to Hayden (heathen) and Trent (invader, trespasser), these people have been granted a life of misery, ugliness, mischief, and confusion simply by being referred to by their name. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Calling all animal lovers! A heartwarming memoir about one woman's career as a vet and the unique role pets play in our lives • “Filled with compassion and wisdom, Karen Fine is a healer whose own wounds have deepened her gifts for bringing animals and their people comfort and peace.” —Sy Montgomery, bestselling author of The Soul of an Octopus A tribute to our furry, feathery, scaley, and wet family members, All Creatures Great and Small meets Being Mortal in this compelling memoir of one woman's dream to become a veterinarian. Karen Fine always knew that she wanted to be a vet and wasn't going to let anything stop her: not her allergy to cats, and not the fact that in the '80s veterinary medicine was still a mostly male profession. Inspired by her grandfather, a compassionate doctor who paid house calls to all his (human) patients, Dr. Fine persevered, and brought her Oupa's principles into her own practice, which emphasizes the need to understand her patients’ stories to provide the best possible care. And in The Other Family Doctor, Dr. Fine shares all these touching, joyful, heartbreaking, and life-affirming tales that make up her career as a vet. There's: • The feral cat who becomes a creature out of a fable when he puts his trust in a young vet to heal his injured paw • The pot-bellied pig who grows too big to fit in the car but remains a cherished part of her family • The surprising colony of perfectly behaved ferrets • The beloved aging pet who gives her people the gift of accompanying them on one final family vacation • The dog who saves his owner's life in a most unexpected way Woven into Dr. Fine's story are, of course, also the stories of her own pets: the birds, cats, and dogs who have taught her the most valuable lessons—how caring for the animals in our lives can teach us to better care for ourselves, especially when life seems precarious.

Book A Black Cat Tale

Download or read book A Black Cat Tale written by Ethel Beadell and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows black cats can fly on Halloween. But where they go and what they do is a mystery. Now all is revealed in "Tarzan A Black Cat Tale", a book for all cat lovers ages five to ninety-five. When Mom brought me home (I called her Mom because that's what the kids Bruce and Katie aged ten and twelve call her), Mom's friend Mrs. Mene gasped, "An alley cat! Where ever did you pick up that ragbag?" Mom's face stiffened a little but she answered gently, "There is no such thing as an alley cat. If a cat's in an alley, a human being put it there." Mrs. Mene sniffed but said no more. She didn't notice me glaring at her. I vowed to myself to remember her insults and get revenge no matter how long it took. The family decided to name me Tarzan, not only because my coat is black as tar but, to raise my ego, they named me after the hero in Edgar Rice Burrowghts' story, Tarzan of the Apes. As if my ego needed raising! Folks don't know black cats can do other things other cats and pets can't do. Even Titi, my companion, doesn't believe me when I tell her what I do on Halloween. Halloween is my night because that is the night of the black cat. People have seen pictures of us silhouetted against the moon ever since they were children but nobody knows where we go or what we do...

Book Blue Smoke

Download or read book Blue Smoke written by Roger House and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contemporary of blues greats Blind Blake, Tampa Red, and Papa Charlie Jackson, Chicago blues artist William "Big Bill" Broonzy influenced an array of postwar musicians, including Muddy Waters, Memphis Slim, and J. B. Lenoir. In Blue Smoke, Roger House tells the extraordinary story of "Big Bill," a working-class bluesman whose circumstances offer a window into the dramatic social transformations faced by African Americans during the first half of the twentieth century. One in a family of twenty-one children and reared by sharecropper parents in Mississippi, Broonzy seemed destined to stay on the land. He moved to Arkansas to work as a sharecropper, preacher, and fiddle player, but the army drafted him during World War I. After his service abroad, Broonzy, like thousands of other black soldiers, returned to the racism and bleak economic prospects of the Jim Crow South and chose to move North to seek new opportunities. After learning to play the guitar, he performed at neighborhood parties in Chicago and in 1927 attracted the attention of Paramount Records, which released his first single, "House Rent Stomp," backed by "Big Bill's Blues." Over the following decades, Broonzy toured the United States and Europe. He released dozens of records but was never quite successful enough to give up working as a manual laborer. Many of his songs reflect this experience as a blue-collar worker, articulating the struggles, determination, and optimism of the urban black working class. Before his death in 1958, Broonzy finally achieved crossover success as a key player in the folk revival movement led by Pete Seeger and Alan Lomax, and as a blues ambassador to British musicians such as Lonnie Donegan and Eric Clapton. Weaving Broonzy's recordings, writings, and interviews into a compelling narrative of his life, Blue Smoke offers a comprehensive portrait of an artist recognized today as one of the most prolific and influential working-class blues musicians of the era.
