Book excerpt: An ex-cop-turned-private-investigator becomes too involved with her work when her new lover turns out to be a murder suspect. A “bitch called hope” is the poker term for drawing the queen-eight in Texas Hold’em. There’s not enough luck in the world to build a winning hand with those cards, but it’s so tempting to try. As a smart poker player, Lennox Cooper knows this. But as a detective, Lennox has issues. A year ago, her affair with a married cop got her fired from the Portland Police. Now she’s trying to build a new life as a private investigator, but all she’s landed so far are surveillance gigs. The murder of a wealthy developer gives her a chance to reestablish herself as a homicide detective. During the course of the investigation she meets Mr. Right. Only problem, he’s on the short list of suspects. Lennox bets on her lover’s innocence, but the odds aren’t much better than drawing a bitch called hope… “A well-crafted mystery novel with a heroine you can root for, plenty of action and a satisfying ending.”―Phillip Margolin, New York Times–bestselling author of Capitol Murder “A noir with heart…Beware, it's hard to put down.”―Cara Black, New York Times–bestselling author of the Aimee Leduc mysteries “Gardner deftly balances the detailed intricacy of the police procedural with a richly nuanced tale of betrayed love, family conflict, and murder. Told with a crisp voice and sharp pacing, the story of private investigator Lennox Cooper packs a wallop from the opening scene.”―Bill Cameron, author of the Spotted Owl Award–winning Country Line

Lennox Cooper, flinty ex-cop and poker playing private detective, stands alone in championing Tomek Jagoda, darling son of a local crime family, accused of murdering his high-living girlfriend. The cops have proof that will send Tomek to prison for life. Meanwhile, prosecuting the case is a Viking goddess of a woman, as smart as she is stunning, who draws everyone's adoration. Next to her, Lennox feels like a garden gnome. It doesn’t help that August Kline, Lennox’s boss and Tomek’s defense attorney, is ready to throw his client under the bus in a plea deal that carries a ten-year sentence just to date the prosecutor. As Lennox untangles all the lies surrounding the case, she sees deeper into Tomek’s humanity and into her own. She realizes that she’s in love with Kline, who’s in lust with the prosecutor. Now, if Lennox hopes to truly save an innocent man, she must wager her job, her love, and her own safety to find the killer… “Readers will look forward to seeing more of the feisty and resourceful Lennox.”—Publishers Weekly

Book My Stone of Hope

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean-Robert Cadet
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2011-11-08
  • ISBN : 0292738854
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book My Stone of Hope written by Jean-Robert Cadet and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 27 million slaves living in the world today—more than at any time in history. Three hundred thousand of them are impoverished children in Haiti, who "stay with" families as unpaid and uneducated domestic workers, subject to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. This practice, known locally as restavek ("staying with"), is so widespread that one in ten Haitian children is caught up in this form of slavery. Jean-Robert Cadet was a restavek in Haiti from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. He told the harrowing story of his youth in Restavec: From Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American—a landmark book that exposed ongoing child slavery in Haiti. Now in My Stone of Hope, Cadet continues his story from his early attempts to adjust to freedom in American society to his current life mission of eliminating child slavery through advocacy and education. As he recounts his own struggles to surmount the psychological wounds of slavery, Cadet puts a human face on the suffering that hundreds of thousands of Haitians still endure daily. He also builds a convincing case that child slavery is not just one among many problems that Haiti faces as the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. Rather, he argues that the systematic abuse of so many of its children is Haiti's fundamental problem, because it creates damaged adults who seem incapable of governing the country justly or managing its economy productively. For everyone concerned about the fate of Haiti, the welfare of children, and the freedom of people around the globe, My Stone of Hope sounds an irresistible call to action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With no fewer than nine members and a unique stage image based on grotesque masks and boiler suits, Slipknot retained a mystique that was unprecedented in the metal world, never allowing their faces to become known – so that the focus would remain on their music. The first edition of this book published in 2001 followed the band from their inception in Des Moines, Iowa in the mid-1990s through to the release of their second album: an updated edition followed in 2003. It’s now a decade since the first volume appeared, and in that time Slipknot have evolved into a completely different band from the one that first emerged into the limelight in 1999. Everyone knows their faces now. The band’s music is darker, deeper and more adult after four studio albums, three DVDs and a live release. Most strikingly, the sudden death of their bass player Paul Gray in 2010 has changed the face and the attitude of the group, although their commercial profile is, if anything, greater than it was before. Slipknot: All Hope Is Gone explores this unlikely and tragic evolution, with new chapters covering the band’s career to date – and it also asks what their future will be.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times Bestseller A bestselling book that is inspiring the nation: “We have written here about terrible things that we never wanted to think about again . . . Now we want the world to know: we survived, we are free, we love life.” Two women kidnapped by infamous Cleveland school-bus driver Ariel Castro share the stories of their abductions, captivity, and dramatic escape On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry. . . . I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for ten years.” A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained. In the decade that followed, the three were raped, psychologically abused, and threatened with death. Berry had a daughter—Jocelyn—by their captor. Drawing upon their recollections and the diary kept by Amanda Berry, Berry and Gina DeJesus describe a tale of unimaginable torment, and Pulitzer Prize–winning Washington Post reporters Mary Jordan and Kevin Sullivan interweave the events within Castro’s house with original reporting on efforts to find the missing girls. The full story behind the headlines—including details never previously released on Castro’s life and motivations—Hope is a harrowing yet inspiring chronicle of two women whose courage, ingenuity, and resourcefulness ultimately delivered them back to their lives and families.

Book The New American Servitude

Download or read book The New American Servitude written by Cati Coe and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines why African care workers feel politically excluded from the United States Care for America’s growing elderly population is increasingly provided by migrants, and the demand for health care labor is only expected to grow. Because of this health care crunch and the low barriers to entry, new African immigrants have adopted elder care as a niche employment sector, funneling their friends and relatives into this occupation. However, elder care puts care workers into racialized, gendered, and age hierarchies, making it difficult for them to achieve social and economic mobility. In The New American Servitude, Coe demonstrates how these workers often struggle to find a sense of political and social belonging. They are regularly subjected to racial insults and demonstrations of power—and effectively turned into servants—at the hands of other members of the care worker network, including clients and their relatives, agency staff, and even other care workers. Low pay, a lack of benefits, and a lack of stable employment, combined with a lack of appreciation for their efforts, often alienate them, so that many come to believe that they cannot lead valuable lives in the United States. While jobs are a means of acculturating new immigrants, African care workers don’t tend to become involved or politically active. Many plan to leave rather than putting down roots in the US. Offering revealing insights into the dark side of a burgeoning economy, The New American Servitude carries serious implications for the future of labor and justice in the care work industry.

Download or read book I Still Have Hope written by Fadwa Carradin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Still Have Hope follows author Fadwa Carradins journey from childhood in war-torn Jordan, through a painful arranged marriage and the loss of her children, to hope of renewal. When Fadwa was nineteen years old, her parents decided that she would marry a doctor they believed would provide well for her but who proved to be so controlling that he would not allow her to leave home or have any unsupervised contact with friends. Fadwa could not divorce her husband out of fear she would be shunned by her family, so she followed him to the United States and later, to Saudi Arabia, focusing on being a good mother. Seventeen years into their marriage, her husband took a second wife and left Fadwa without sufficient means to support their five children. The only way Fadwa could ensure her children would get an education and have any chance of success was to allow their father and stepmother to raise them in Saudi Arabia and Palestine, not knowing when she would see them again. She returned to the United States in search of new opportunities, even removing the hijab head covering she had worn from the age of ten, so she could serve in the U.S. Army. I Still Have Hope tells the story of Fadwas loss but also of her persistent efforts to rebuild her life and have contact with her children again.
