Book Colonialism and Knowledge in Grierson s Linguistic Survey of India

Download or read book Colonialism and Knowledge in Grierson s Linguistic Survey of India written by Javed Majeed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first detailed examination of George Abraham Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India, one of the most complete sources on South Asian languages. It shows that the Survey was characterised by a composite and collaborative mode of producing knowledge, which undermines any clear distinctions between European orientalists and colonised Indians in British India. Its authority lay more in its stress on the provisional nature of its findings, an emphasis on the approximate nature of its results, and a strong sense of its own shortcomings and inadequacies, rather than in any expression of mastery over India’s languages. The book argues that the Survey brings to light a different kind of colonial knowledge, whose relationship to power was much more ambiguous than has hitherto been assumed for colonial projects in modern India. It also highlights the contribution of Indians to the creation of colonial knowledge about South Asia as a linguistic region. Indians were important collaborators and participants in the Survey, and they helped to create the monumental knowledge of India as a linguistic region which is embodied in the Survey. This volume, like its companion volume Nation and Region in Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India, will be a great resource for scholars and researchers of linguistics, language and literature, history, political studies, cultural studies and South Asian studies.

Book People of India

Download or read book People of India written by M. K. Bhasin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older works in Indian anthropology essentially were restricted to compilation and descriptive studies of biological and sociological parameters. The authors give an overview of existing studies of this type and add results of their own extensive studies. They however move on to the application of modern methods of anthropology with the aim towards the analysis of causes, and the understanding of the population biology. The closing sentence the summary states correctly............ It may be concluded that to understand the population variation of the heterogeneous Indian society, there is a need for a holistic approach involving environment, sociocultural integrations and biological traits. The authors made a big step toward this goal. This book is not only a rich source of information and of stimulating reading; it represents an outstanding example of very fruitful cooperation of an Indian and German team toward a common goal.

Book Indo European Origins

Download or read book Indo European Origins written by John V. Day and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of the evidence from biological anthropology for Indo-European origins, based on the author¿s Ph.D. thesis prepared under Professor James Mallory. The author first considers the various ways that languages can spread and the possible biological implications of these expansions. He then embarks on an exhaustive survey of over 2,600 books and articles relating to the physical anthropology of the earliest identified speakers of Indo-European languages, based on ancient texts, artworks and lexicons. Covering Europe and Asia from the Neolithic onwards, His study surveys dermatoglyphics, mummified corpses, skeletal remains and genetic material for evidence of ancient population movements. An attempt is then made to integrate findings from biological anthropology with data from linguistics, archaeology and social anthropology to test the validity of migration theories in relation to the dispersal of the Indo-European languages and the possible location of a hypothecated proto-Indo-European language. The bibliography lists over 2,600 books and articles.
