Book A Biogeographic Synthesis of the Amphibians and Reptiles of Indochina

Download or read book A Biogeographic Synthesis of the Amphibians and Reptiles of Indochina written by Raoul H. Bain and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indochina (Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam) houses over 600 species of amphibians and reptiles, roughly a quarter of which has been described within the last 15 years. Herein, we undertake the first biogeographic synthesis of the regional herpetofauna since the first half of the 20th century. We review the literature to measure and map species richness and endemism, the contributions of regional faunas, and ecological characteristics of Indochina's amphibians (Anura, Caudata), and reptiles (Serpentes, Sauria, Testudines, Crocodylia). Dividing Indochina into 19 subregions defined by topography and geology, we estimate the similarity among the regional faunas and appraise the effects of area and survey effort on these comparative analyses. Variation in species composition is broadly correlated with topography, habitat complexity, and proximity to regions outside Indochina. Indochina's herpetofauna is dominated (in decreasing order) by endemic species, widely distributed species, a South China fauna, and a biota centered in Thailand and Myanmar. Species richness is highest in amphibians and snakes, and peaks in upland forests. Endemism, highest among amphibians and lizards, also peaks in forests of the region's northern uplands and Annamite Range. Endemic species occupy a narrower range of habitats than nonendemics. Patterns of richness and endemism are partially explained by ecological constraints: amphibians and lizards are more restricted to forests than snakes, turtles, and crocodiles; amphibians are more restricted to uplands, turtles to lowlands. We also assess biogeography in the context of Indochina's geology, climate, and land cover. In northern Indochina, the Red River either acts as or coincides with an apparent dispersal barrier. Herpetofauna in northeastern upland areas are closely allied with fauna of southeastern China. In southern Indochina there is little evidence that the Mekong River represents a biogeographic barrier to the regional herpetofauna. The Annamite Range is composed of at least three distinct units and its elevated species richness and endemism are also noted in adjacent lowlands. Contribution of subtropical biota to Indochina's fauna is significantly greater than that of tropical biota and there is little other evidence for intermixing at intermediate latitudes. Our results have implications for biogeography and conservation efforts, although they must be viewed in the context of rapidly evolving systematic knowledge of the region's amphibians and reptiles. Future survey efforts, and the phylogenetic analyses that come from them, are essential for supporting regional conservation efforts, as they will better resolve the known patterns of amphibian and reptile richness and endemism.

Book Amphibians and Reptiles of the West Indies

Download or read book Amphibians and Reptiles of the West Indies written by Albert Schwartz and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 1991 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This meticulous book summarizes all available information on West Indian herpetofauna. Using data from more than 6,000 pages of field notes and 1,000 literature sources, Schwartz and Henderson present a detailed account of every known reptile and amphibian species existing on the numerous islands of the West Indies. For each (almost 600), they offer a complete synopsis, including description, holotype, source of illustrations, and range map. A section on natural history summarizes what is known about the habitat, microhabitat, economic bearing, food habits, and reproduction of each animal, and in some cases it shows how these traits change from island to island. In opening remarks, the authors plead eloquently for awareness of the rampant environmental degradation taking place on the islands. For every herpetologist, biologist, ecologist, or biogeographer with an interest in the Antillean biota, Amphibians and Reptiles will become the source from which all future research proceeds.

Book Herpetofauna of Vietnam

Download or read book Herpetofauna of Vietnam written by Van-Sang Nguyen and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with his coauthors, Nguyen Quang Truong modernized taxonomic concepts and nomenclature, filled gaps with new knowledge on the herpetofauna, mostly with the astonishingly perpetuating new discoveries which increased and still increase the number of species in this impressive way. The herpetological exploration of Vietnam, originally based on the classic, monographic works (1934 - 1944) of the French author Rene Bourret, was followed by a most intensive period of herpetofaunistic and taxonomic research just in the last few decades. This was carried out by Vietnamese, but also many foreign herpetologists, among them Russian, Canadian, US-American, British and last but not least German teams which often cooperated also among each other. This period of intensified research resulted in the discovery and description of numerous new species and even genera. My colleague and friend Kraig Adler, Cornell University, contributed an own and detailed chapter on this important asp10ect of the history of Vietnamese herpetology to the present new book.As can be seen from the extended acknowledgement section of this book, numerous colleagues from many countries were helpful and gave information, comments and/or their photographs for this comprehensive checklist of Vietnam's amphibians and reptiles. This remarkable new book reflects the high degree of international cooperation and is thus also a splendid example for other countries with a similarly rich natural heritage. I am happy that, together with the Zoological Garden of Cologne, also my institute is allowed to take part in this fruitful cooperation. Finally, it is also necessary to acknowledge the role of the Publisher. The engagement of 'Chimaira', Frankfurt am Main, in editing this book is highly appreciated as it enables - at last - the international availability of all the information on Vietnam's herpetofauna which has been gathered by the above-mentioned herpetological community

Book Evidence based Conservation

Download or read book Evidence based Conservation written by Terry C.H. Sunderland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a considerable gap between the science of conservation biology and the design and execution of biodiversity conservation projects in the field. Science is often failing to inform the practice of conservation, which remains largely experience-based. The main reason is the poor accessibility of evidence on the effectiveness of different interventions. This is the basis for this book adopting an 'evidence-based approach', modelled on the systematic reviews used in health sciences and now being applied to many policy arenas. Evidence-based Conservation brings together a series of case studies, written by field practitioners, that provides the evidence-base for evaluating how effective conservation and poverty alleviation strategies can be better implemented. A series of systematic reviews uses experiences and data from fifteen integrated conservation and development projects conducted in the Lower Mekong region, specifically in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. They provide wide-ranging overviews of the effectiveness of protected areas and how innovative tools and methods for monitoring and evaluation can be utilised for more effective outcomes. Results are in the form of management and policy recommendations, based on the quality of evidence and the cost-utility of the intervention. By bridging the gap between field practice and conservation, the analysis should lead to more effective integrated conservation and development interventions. The book represents one of the first attempts to apply the evidence-based approach to conservation and development.

Book Conservation Biology for All

Download or read book Conservation Biology for All written by Navjot S. Sodhi and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation Biology for All provides cutting-edge but basic conservation science to a global readership. A series of authoritative chapters have been written by the top names in conservation biology with the principal aim of disseminating cutting-edge conservation knowledge as widely as possible. Important topics such as balancing conversion and human needs, climate change, conservation planning, designing and analyzing conservation research, ecosystem services, endangered species management, extinctions, fire, habitat loss, and invasive species are covered. Numerous textboxes describing additional relevant material or case studies are also included. The global biodiversity crisis is now unstoppable; what can be saved in the developing world will require an educated constituency in both the developing and developed world. Habitat loss is particularly acute in developing countries, which is of special concern because it tends to be these locations where the greatest species diversity and richest centres of endemism are to be found. Sadly, developing world conservation scientists have found it difficult to access an authoritative textbook, which is particularly ironic since it is these countries where the potential benefits of knowledge application are greatest. There is now an urgent need to educate the next generation of scientists in developing countries, so that they are in a better position to protect their natural resources.
