Book Economics for Fisheries Management

Download or read book Economics for Fisheries Management written by R. Quentin Grafton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the world's fisheries face major challenges including overfishing, overcapacity and low returns. Using recent developments in microeconomic theory and with numerous case studies and examples, this book shows how to measure efficiency, productivity, profitability, capacity of fishing fleets and how to improve fisheries management. The book will prove invaluable to researchers, students and professionals interested in understanding the problems in fisheries and how they may be overcome.

Book Maximizing Profits and Conserving Stocks in the Australian Northern Prawn Fishery

Download or read book Maximizing Profits and Conserving Stocks in the Australian Northern Prawn Fishery written by Tom Kompas and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) is one of the few that has adopted a dynamic version of a 'maximum economic yield' (MEY) target, and, on this basis, the fishery is undergoing a process of substantial stock rebuilding. This study details the bioeconomic model used to provide scientific management advice for the NPF, in terms of the amount of allowable total gear length in the fishery, for both the MEY target and the path to MEY. It combines the stock assessment process for two species of tiger prawns with a specification for discounted economic profits, where the harvest function in the profit equation is stock-dependent. Results for the NPF show a substantial 'stock effect', indicating the importance of conserving fish stocks for profitability. MEY thus occurs at a stock size that is larger than that at maximum sustainable yield, leading to a 'win-win' situation for both the industry (added profitability) and the environment (larger fish stocks and lower impact on the ecosystem). Sensitivity results emphasize this effect by showing that the MEY target is much more sensitive to changes in the price of prawns and the cost of fuel, and far less so to the rate of discount.

Book The Economics and Management of World Fisheries

Download or read book The Economics and Management of World Fisheries written by Trond Bjørndal and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades there has been increasing interest in, and concern about, the economics of the world's capture fishery resources. Massive amounts of resource rent are being lost because of inadequate management and major rebuilding of fishery resources is called for. This book draws together the latest economic theory of the management of these resources, at both the national and the international levels, and highlights areas where further research is urgently required. The emphasis is on world capture fisheries, rather than fisheries of specific regions, and examples are drawn upon from both developed and developing countries. It combines economic theory and empirical testing with an examination and analysis of resource policy options, with particular emphasis on fisheries management polices at the international level, where some of the most difficult resource management problems are found. The authors maintain that capture fishery resources are properly viewed as a part of society's portfolio of natural capital assets. Consequently, a central theme of the book is that managing such resources should be viewed as asset management through time. Written by two leading authorities, this accessible textbook has been specially developed to meet the needs of students taking courses on fisheries management as well as professionals working in this area for governments and international organisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have been fishing for food and pleasure since time immemorial. Long before the development of powerful commercial fishing vessels, tribal communities sought fish and other marine life for food and ceremonial purposes. Today, there is a significant tourism sector around diving and snorkelling.Commercial and recreational fisheries often compete for the same fish stock. Together these two groups compete with those who wish to promote a 'look but don't take' attitude to fish. And in some cases, traditional indigenous fishers have special demands that can be inconsistent with the needs of other groups. The limited nature of fish stocks can lead to arguments between these different groups. Too often the arguments are based on a wrong use of economic data. Access to and sharing of fisheries resources need not necessarily be based on economic data and principles, but if they are, the proper approach must be used. This book sets out in clear language, with simple examples, the correct economic method to be used. The aim is to improve decision-making so that everyone can enjoy a seafood meal, drop a line in the water or observe fish in a natural environment without unnecessary conflict.
