Book Natural Resource Conflicts and Sustainable Development

Download or read book Natural Resource Conflicts and Sustainable Development written by E. Gunilla Almered Olsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing both a theoretical background and practical examples of natural resource conflict, this volume explores the pressures on natural resources leading to scarcity and conflict. It is shown that the causes and driving forces behind natural resource conflicts are diverse, complex and often interlinked, including global economic growth, exploding consumption, poor governance, poverty, unequal access to resources and power. The different interpretations of nature-culture and the role of humans in the ecosystem are often at the centre of the conflict. Natural resource conflicts range from armed conflicts to conflicts of interest between stakeholders in the North as well as in the South. The varying driving forces behind such disputes at different levels and scales are critically analysed, and approaches to facilitate and enforce mediation, transformation and collaboration at these levels and scales are presented and discussed. In order to transform existing resource conflicts, as well as to decrease the risk of future conflicts, approaches that enhance and enforce collaboration for sustainable development at global, regional, national and local levels are reviewed, and sustainable pathways suggested. A range of global examples is presented including water resources, fisheries, forests, human–wildlife conflicts, urban environments and the consequences of climate change. It will be a valuable text for advanced students of natural resource management, environment and development studies and peace and conflict management. The book will also be of interest to practitioners in the field of natural resource management.

Book Conflicts over Natural Resources

Download or read book Conflicts over Natural Resources written by Jacqueline Vaughn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-01-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an overview of the critical natural resource conflicts facing the United States and the world, and current attempts to resolve them peacefully. Conflicts over natural resources are not new. But they are now worldwide, enduring, increasingly contentious, and in some cases, intractable. In this new book, political scientist Jacqueline Vaughn explores conflicts over natural resources—both renewable and nonrenewable—in the United States and from a worldwide perspective. Conflicts over Natural Resources focuses on four major controversies: minerals, oil, and natural gas drilling; protected areas policy; range land management; and timber and forests. On the global level, the work also explores issues surrounding diamonds and precious metals, forest destruction, and water scarcity. For students, professionals, and lay readers alike, this book offers a thorough and balanced grounding in both the problems surrounding resource management and the successful strategies for resolution.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foresters and natural resource managers must balance conflicting objectives when developing land-management plans. Conflicts may encompass economic, environmental, social, cultural, technical, and aesthetic objectives. Selecting the best combination of management uses from numerous objectives is difficult and challenging. Multi-Criteria Decision Models (MCDM) provide a systematic means for comparing tradeoffs and selecting alternatives that best satisfy the decisionmakergass objectives. In recent years, the use of MCDM in forestry and natural resources management has generated a substantial body of literature. This annotated bibliography includes 124 important references ranging from theoretical studies to real-world applications of MCDM.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected from the July 1999 eighth International Symposium on Society and Resource Management, held in Brisbane, 18 papers deal explicitly with the social dimension of natural resource management. They conclude that there is a paucity of material theorizing the nexus of environment, society, and natural resources, and suggest some new choices of theoretical frameworks for researchers in field studies. They consider the role of the social sciences in natural resource management, planning and impact assessment, sustaining resources, and institutions and regulation. c. Book News Inc.
