Book Liberty s Apostle Richard Price His Life and Times

Download or read book Liberty s Apostle Richard Price His Life and Times written by Paul Frame and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in the village of Llangeinor, near Bridgend in south Wales, Richard Price (1723–91) was, to his contemporaries, an apostle of liberty, an enemy to tyranny and a great benefactor of the human race. His friend Benjamin Franklin described aspects of his work as ‘the foremost production of human understanding that this century has afforded us’. A supporter of the American and French Revolutions, Price corresponded with the likes of Jefferson, Adams, Washington, Mirabeau and Condorcet. In November 1789 he publicly welcomed the start of the French Revolution and thus inspired not only Edmund Burke to write his rebuttal in Reflections on the Revolution in France, but also the Revolution Controversy, ‘the most crucial ideological debate ever carried on in English’. Price also brought to world attention the Bayes-Price Theorem on probability, which is the invisible background to so much in modern life, and wrote a fundamental text on moral philosophy. Yet, despite all this and more, he remains little-known beyond academia, a situation that this biography helps to rectify. Liberty’s Apostle tells his life story through his published works and, fully for the first time, his now published correspondence with a host of eighteenth century celebrities. The life revealed is of a truly remarkable Welshman and, as Condorcet remarked, of ‘one of the formative minds’ of the eighteenth century Enlightenment.

Excerpt: ...ten pamphlets have great and general influence. The ' facility with which the same truths may be repeatedly "enforced by placing them daily in different lights in "newspapers which are every where read, gives a great n chance of establishing them. And we now find that it "is not only right to strike while the iron is hot, but that "it may be very practicable to heat it by continually "striking. I suppose all may now correspond with more "freedom, and I shall be glad to hear from you as often The death of this amiable and excellent peraon had happened a few weeks before the writing of this letter.--He had long been the intimate friend of Dr. Price, and one of the principal members of his congregation at Newingtou Greco.--He was the author of several valuable works on moral and political subjects, and in all of them proved himself the steadfast friend of virtue and liberty. His last publication, under the titleof " Political Disquisitions," though written under the excruciating agonies of the stone, abounds with the most important information on the-extrcme drfectivcncss of the national representation, and cannot fail to be admired by all who wish to restore the constitution to its original purity..... by the death of the Marquis of Rockingham. On this unfortunate event a contention for power arose between the friends of Lord Shelburne and those of the Duke of Portland, which terminated in favour of the former, and consequently in the resignation and inveterate hatred of the latter. The cabals and intrigues which produced and fomented these dissensions form no part of my design in writing this history. I shall therefore only observe, that however much Dr. Price's friendship disposed him to consider...

Download or read book The Chemical Weapons Taboo written by Richard MacKay Price and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard M. Price asks why, among all the ominous technologies of weaponry throughout the history of warfare, chemical weapons carry a special moral stigma. Something more seems to be at work than the predictable resistance people have expressed to any new weaponry, from the crossbow to nuclear bombs. Perceptions of chemical warfare as particularly abhorrent have been successfully institutionalized in international proscriptions and, Price suggests, understanding the sources of this success might shed light on other efforts at arms control. To explore the origins and meaning of the chemical weapons taboo, Price presents a series of case studies from World War I through the Gulf War of 1990-1991. He traces the moral arguments against gas warfare from the Hague Conferences at the turn of the century through negotiations for the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993. From the Italian invasion of Ethiopia to the war between Iran and Iraq, chemical weapons have been condemned as the "poor man's bomb." Drawing upon insights from Michel Foucault to explain the role of moral norms in an international arena rarely sensitive to such pressures, he focuses on the construction of and mutations in the refusal to condone chemical weapons.
