Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Bookbinding On the other hand, some branches of the bookbinder's craft have now become quite distinct, and have developed into special industries, and have so enlarged and extended that even their particular methods of working and technical terms have quite changed. Cardboard goods, leather goods, photo albums, maps, and even account-books are treated by particular firms as specialities. AS we must now keep within clearly defined limits, we shall treat here only the work of bookbinding proper as far as it is concerned with the making Of the book for publisher, bookseller, and buyer, and also the making of account-books, whilst the other work given to the binder, commonly called fancy goods, must be excluded. Book The Art Of Bookbinding

Download or read book The Art Of Bookbinding written by Joseph William Zaehnsdorf and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art Of Bookbinding: A Practical Treatise With Plates And Diagrams. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Download or read book Library Bookbinding Classic Reprint written by Arthur L. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library Bookbinding An examination of the annual reports of libraries in the United States shows that from four to eight per cent of the total income is spent for binding; the amounts ranging from to over a year for this one item. It must be admitted that these are large sums and that a knowledge of binding materi als and processes is necessary in order to spend this money wisely. In many libraries the appropriation for books includes binding and periodicals. It is evident, therefore, that every dollar saved on binding can be devoted to the purchase of books. And what librarian does not desire more money for new books? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Bookbinding for Amateurs

Download or read book Bookbinding for Amateurs written by W. J. E. Crane and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bookbinding for Amateurs: Being Descriptions of the Various Tools and Appliances Required and Minute Instructions for Their Effective Use Little prefatory remark is required in introducing this email book to the public. The present day is especially noticeable for the number of amateur workers who are found in every department of art and technics. That being so, there is certainly no branch of work better fitted to claim their time and attention than that of Bookbinding. It is of great antiquity, of the utmost utility, and capable of almost any degree of artistic development. Looking back to the birth and early history of literature, we find all the oldest manuscripts, both classical and oriental, were written on sheets of parchment or papyrus, and rolled up when not in use. The bookbinder of those days was simply a maker of circular cabinets or repositories, suitable for containing these rolls; and these cases, when for bibliophiles, were often beautifully ornamented. When and by whom the plan of folding the sheet of parchment or paper into pages, and stitching sheets together at the back, was first introduced, is not exactly known; but at that time, and not till then, the book sprang into existence. This new back required the bookbinder as we know him now; and at the very outset of the trade, his work, though entirely different to the bibliopegistic productions of the present day, was elaborate and beautiful. The whole subsequent history of bookbinding has done credit to its brilliant beginning. There are many good reasons for commending this craft to the attention of amateurs, amongst which we will enumerate a few. First, it does not require any great strength or mechanical aptitude. Secondly, the plant is not expensive. Thirdly, it can be pursued anywhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
