Book excerpt: At the turn of the 20th century, social reformer Jane Addams provides a thought-provoking look at the economic vulnerabilities facing young working women in America's industrial centers. Addams' account draws on her groundbreaking work at Chicago's Hull House settlement, casting an empathetic yet unflinching eye on the harsh realities of poverty and gender inequality. Through piercing observation and insightful analysis, Addams documents the poor working and living conditions plaguing female garment and domestic workers. She exposes their low wages, long hours, unsafe work spaces, and lack of bargaining power or legal protections. Addams' examination reveals complex links between socioeconomic forces and these women's susceptibility to exploitation. Arguing for societal remedies over superficial charity, Addams proposes novel solutions to uplift working women through education, community organization, and labor reforms. Her examination of women's economic independence speaks strikingly to ongoing relevance today. Addams' blend of steadfast idealism with unsentimental pragmatism provides an thought-provoking portrait of belated justice for working women. A Belated Industry brings Addams' progressive vision to life through empathetic portraits of young women struggling to retain dignity and hope in the churning Industrial-era economy. This compelling snapshot illuminates the beginnings of Addams' iconic career advocating for society's most vulnerable.

Download or read book Breadwinners written by Lara Vapnek and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lara Vapnek tells the story of American labor feminism from the end of the Civil War through the winning of woman suffrage. During this period, working women in the nation's industrializing cities launched a series of campaigns to gain economic equality and political power. This book shows how working women pursued equality by claiming new identities as citizens and as breadwinners. Analyzing disjunctions between middle-class and working-class women's ideas of independence, Vapnek highlights the agendas for change advanced by leaders such as Jennie Collins, Leonora O'Reilly, and Helen Campbell and organizations such as the National Consumers' League, the Women's Educational and Industrial Union, and the Women's Trade Union League. Locating households as important sites of class conflict, Breadwinners recovers the class and gender politics behind the marginalization of domestic workers from labor reform while documenting the ways in which working-class women raised their voices on their own behalf.

Book Jane Addams s Evolutionary Theorizing

Download or read book Jane Addams s Evolutionary Theorizing written by Marilyn Fischer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jane Addams’s Evolutionary Theorizing, Marilyn Fischer advances the bold and original claim that Addams’s reasoning in her first book, Democracy and Social Ethics, is thoroughly evolutionary. While Democracy and Social Ethics, a foundational text of classical American pragmatism, is praised for advancing a sensitive and sophisticated method of ethical deliberation, Fischer is the first to explore its intellectual roots. Examining essays Addams wrote in the 1890s and showing how they were revised for Democracy and Social Ethics, Fischer draws from philosophy, history, literature, rhetoric, and more to uncover the array of social evolutionary thought Addams engaged with in her texts—from British socialist writings on the evolution of democracy to British and German anthropological accounts of the evolution of morality. By excavating Addams’s evolutionary reasoning and rhetorical strategies, Fischer reveals the depth, subtlety, and richness of Addams’s thought.

Book Propaganda and Nation Building

Download or read book Propaganda and Nation Building written by Kevin Hora and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the origins of Ireland in its first independent incarnation, the Irish Free State (1922-1937). It explores how contemporary public relations and propaganda techniques were used to construct an identity for this new state – a state which after enduring seven years of insurrection and civil war, became one of the most stable democracies in Europe. This stability, the book argues, was constructed not solely through policies enacted by governments, but through the construction of a Gaelic, Catholic and Celtic national identity. By shifting the perspective to how nation building was communicated, it weaves an interdisciplinary narrative that initiates a new understanding of nation building - providing insights of increasing relevance in current world events. Avoiding a simplistic cause and effect history of public relations, the book examines the uses and effects of early public relations from a political and societal perspective and suggests that while governments were only modestly successful in their varied propaganda efforts, cumulatively they facilitated a transition from violence to peace. This will be of interest to researchers and advanced students with an interest in public relations, propaganda studies, nation building and Irish studies.
