Book A Beginner s History Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Beginner s History Classic Reprint written by William H. Mace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Beginner's History The material out of which the child pictures history lies all about him. When he learns to handle objects or observes men and other beings act, he is gathering material to form images for the stories you tell him, or those he reads. So supple and vigorous is the child's imagination that he can put this store of material to use in picturing a fairy story, a legend, or a myth. From this same source - his observation of the people and things about him - he gathers simple meanings and ideas of his own. He weaves these meanings and ideas, in part, into the stories he reads or is told. From the cradle to the grave he should exercise this habit of testing the men and institutions he studies by a comparison with those he has seen. The teacher should use the stories in this book to impress upon the pupil's mind the idea that life is a constant struggle against opposing difficulties. The pupil should be able to see that the great men of American history spent their lives in a ceaseless effort to conquer obstacles. For everywhere men find opponents. What a struggle Lincoln had against the twin difficulties of poverty and ignorance! What a bat tle Roosevelt waged with timidity and a sickly boyhood! And what a tremendously courageous and vigorous man he became! In the fight which men wage for noble or ignoble ends the pupil finds his greatest source of interest. Here he forms his ideas of right and wrong, and deals out praise and blame among the characters. Hence the need of presenting true Americans patriotic Americans - for his study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's History of Our Country In the first place, unlike some primary histories in com mon use, this is not an abridgment of a larger history. To attempt, within the narrow limits of a primary text book, to present all Of'the events of our national life that are commonly considered important from the adult's standpoint, would be to reduce the narrative to little more than a catalogue of names and dates. Moreover, some subjects embraced in our country's history are absolutely beyond the comprehension of an immature mind. To require the young pupil to memorize statements upon such subjects is nothing short of a pedagogical crime. Book Britain in the Middle Ages a History for Beginners Classic Reprint

Download or read book Britain in the Middle Ages a History for Beginners Classic Reprint written by Florence L. Bowman and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britain in the Middle Ages a History for Beginners Since, in the early stages of school work, it is more important to present, as vividly as possible, some of the fundamental historic ideas than to give any outline of events, it is hoped that this collection of stories, told from the chronicles, may provoke readers to discussion and further inquiry. Questions have been included in the appendix, some suggesting handwork, both as a means of presentation in lessons and for illustrative purposes. Considerable use has been made of literature as historic evidence. Stories like those of the Knights of the Round Table often leave us with a clearer impression of the spirit of the times than any historic record. Many books of the kind are now easily accessible and could be read side by side with the text. Collections of pictures, such as the Bayeux Tapestry, published by the Victoria and Albert Museum, and Foucquet's Chroniques de France, offer valuable opportunities for some research on the child's part. Book LAST PERIODS OF UNIVERSAL HIST

Download or read book LAST PERIODS OF UNIVERSAL HIST written by Emma Willard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Last Periods of Universal History Prefatory remarks.-the fresh events just added to my Universal History are, though forcibly condensed into small compass, numerous, and full of interest and importance. Like Columbus, I have steered my bark through untraveled seas, having collected my facts mostly from newspapers and periodicals, including annals; but I have journeyed in the meantime in my own and in foreign countries, and have often enjoyed the privilege of conversing with the actors of the historic drama, or those personally acquainted with their deeds. The ability to trace great events to their true causes, cannot exist without previous familiarity with his tory; nor is this alone sufficient. And here it becomes no historian to presume on his own success, but humbly to await the award of his judges. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Biblical History: Old Testament Religious education is one of the many problems of our day, and nowhere is the difficulty more acute than in the case of the Old Testament. Under no circumstances is it an easy task to arrange the different component parts of a volume so varied in such a manner as to give a young student a clear idea of its meaning and purpose. Isolated stories may arouse interest, but their connexion with the rest is not very obvious. Here and there a psalm or prophecy may touch the heart; but it stands as a thing apart, without anything to account for its origin. Not unfrequently, moreover, in the course of instruction in a particular book we meet with narratives apparently unedifying, or sentiments which are certainly not in accord with the highest views today. There is the further difficulty of answering questions like Is such an account true? Is this or that statement in accordance with what we are taught in a lesson on science or geography? Do people really believe this? For youth is a season of credulous scepticism. A child will accept much on authority, and at the same time is ready with questions going to the Very root of a matter. He also possesses an instinctive power of detecting that the teacher is himself doubtful as to the facts on which he is insisting.
