Book excerpt: Since it was founded in 2003, Good African Coffee has helped thousands of farmers earn a decent living, send their children to school and escape a spiral of debt and dependence. Africa has received over $1 trillion in aid over the last fifty years and yet despite these huge inflows, the continent remains mired in poverty, disease and systemic corruption. In A Good African Story, as Andrew Rugasira recounts the very personal story of his company and the challenges that he has faced – and overcome – as an African entrepreneur, he provides a tantalising glimpse of what Africa could be, and argues that trade has achieved what years of aid have failed to deliver. Book Betty s Travel Journals

Download or read book Betty s Travel Journals written by Elisabeth Hewes and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The travels and observations of Elisabeth Hewes in her retirement years, during the last decade of the 20th century. With contributions by Stephen Butt and John Florance of BBC Radio Leicester During her retirement years, apart from her diaries, Elisabeth Hewes of Ravenstone in Leicestershire, wrote of her many travels, which were often accomplished in just one day. Betty's Travel Journals begin in April 1992 and finish at the end of 2000. They give a vivid insight into her love of life and people; we see familiar things through different eyes and visit unknown places which leave us with a feeling that we must go there ourselves. Travelling by road, rail, or merely on foot, Betty uses only the most salient points to describe her world in rich colours, but always with humour, intelligence and that steadfast sense of belonging and purpose found in her diaries. As Betty counts down to the New Millennium, she meticulously records her high days and holidays. We travel with her the length and breadth of Britain: from Bardon Hill Quarry to Buckingham Palace; from mighty Canterbury Cathedral to Snibston's little St. Mary's; from the most serene and tranquil Lakeland view to the busiest bustling day in the heart of our nation's great capital. Her journals feature hundreds of indexed and detailed entries in which she quotes from sources as diverse as the essays of Dr. Johnson and her local newspaper, each equally as relevant and informative as the next. Betty's Travel Journals are laced together with a strong historical and religious narrative but with an ever watchful eye on history in the making. Her travels were not confined to distance however; the 1990s saw incredible strides made by humankind and Betty documents our world's biggest events in the final years of the twentieth century as they play out alongside her journey through what turned out to be the last decade of her life.

Book Aesthetics After Modernism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Diarmuid Costello
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2024
  • ISBN : 0197756395
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Aesthetics After Modernism written by Diarmuid Costello and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Aesthetics after Modernism argues for the ongoing relevance of aesthetics to art after modernism. In it, I show that even what are typically taken to be the hardest of hard cases engage us in recognisably aesthetic ways and, as such, remain amenable to aesthetic analysis. Why, if that is true, do so many art theorists, critics and sometimes even artists appear to think otherwise? I trace the artworld's rejection of aesthetic theory to Clement Greenberg's success in co-opting the discourse of aesthetics, notably Kant's aesthetics, to underwrite his own formalism about modernist art. Not only has this led to Kant being tarred with the brush of Greenbergian formalism; it has also led critics and theorists of later art to miss the resources of the aesthetic tradition, perhaps especially Kant, for capturing what is distinctive about our cognitive relation to the kinds of art that interest them. There is a tendency simply to assume that Kant's aesthetics cannot speak to the more conceptual aspects of our interactions with art. I trace the legacy of Greenberg's modernism and formalism for later art criticism and theory, before offering an interpretation of Kant's theory of art that seeks to show otherwise. I take Conceptual Art as my test case: here is a form of art that often claims to forgo sensible properties altogether. But if Kant's aesthetics can accommodate to our cognitive relation to art with no sensible features relevant to its appreciation as art then it should in principle withstand the challenge of any form of art"--

Book Androgyny in Late Ming and Early Qing Literature

Download or read book Androgyny in Late Ming and Early Qing Literature written by Zuyan Zhou and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frequent appearance of androgyny in Ming and Qing literature has long interested scholars of late imperial Chinese culture. A flourishing economy, widespread education, rising individualism, a prevailing hedonism--all of these had contributed to the gradual disintegration of traditional gender roles in late Ming and early Qing China (1550-1750) and given rise to the phenomenon of androgyny. Now, Zuyan Zhou sheds new light on this important period, offering a highly original and astute look at the concept of androgyny in key works of Chinese fiction and drama from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. The work begins with an exploration of androgyny in Chinese philosophy and Ming-Qing culture. Zhou proceeds to examine chronologically the appearance of androgyny in major literary writing of the time, yielding novel interpretations of canonical works from The Plum in the Golden Vase, through the scholar-beauty romances, to The Dream of the Red Chamber. He traces the ascendance of the androgyny craze in the late Ming, its culmination in the Ming-Qing transition, and its gradual phasing out after the mid-Qing. The study probes deviations from engendered codes of behavior both in culture and literature, then focuses on two parallel areas: androgyny in literary characterization and androgyny in literati identity. The author concludes that androgyny in late Ming and early Qing literature is essentially the dissident literati's stance against tyrannical politics, a psychological strategy to relieve anxiety over growing political inferiority.

Book Studies in Medievalism XXXIII

Download or read book Studies in Medievalism XXXIII written by Karl Fugelso and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on the post-modern reception and interpretation of the Middle Ages. Though Studies in Medievalism has hosted many essays on gender, this is the first volume devoted specifically to that theme. The first part features four short essays that directly address manifestations of sexism in postmedieval responses to the Middle Ages: gender substitutions in a Grail Quest episode of the 2023 television series Mrs. Davis, repurposed misogyny in the last two episodes of Game of Thrones (2011-19), traditional gender stereotypes in Capital One's credit card commercials from 2000 to 2013, and "shaggy" medievalism in Robert Eggers' 2022 film The Northman. The second part contains ten longer essays, which collectively continue to demonstrate the ubiquity of gender issues and the extraordinary flexibility of approaches to them. The authors discuss the misogynistic sexualization of Grendel's mother in Parke Godwin's 1995 fantasy novel The Tower of Beowulf, in Graham Baker's 1999 film Beowulf, in three episodes from the television series Xena: Warrior Princess, and in Robert Zemeckis's 2007 film Beowulf; gender substitution in David Lowery's 2021 film The Green Knight and in Kinoku Nasu's and Takashi Takeuchi's anime series Fate (2004-); female authorship of three early-nineteenth-century plays about court ladies' medieval empowerment; extraordinary violence in medievalist video games; nationalism in fake nineteenth-century medievalist documents and in contemporary online fora; racial discrimination in video gaming and in Jim Crow literature; and the condemnation of racism in Maria Dahvana Headley's 2018 novel The Mere Wife.

Book Looking for Miss America

Download or read book Looking for Miss America written by Margot Mifflin and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an author praised for writing “delicious social history” (Dwight Garner, The New York Times) comes a lively account of memorable Miss America contestants, protests, and scandals—and how the pageant, nearing its one hundredth anniversary, serves as an unintended indicator of feminist progress Looking for Miss America is a fast–paced narrative history of a curious and contradictory institution. From its start in 1921 as an Atlantic City tourist draw to its current incarnation as a scholarship competition, the pageant has indexed women’s status during periods of social change—the post–suffrage 1920s, the Eisenhower 1950s, the #MeToo era. This ever–changing institution has been shaped by war, evangelism, the rise of television and reality TV, and, significantly, by contestants who confounded expectations. Spotlighting individuals, from Yolande Betbeze, whose refusal to pose in swimsuits led an angry sponsor to launch the rival Miss USA contest, to the first black winner, Vanessa Williams, who received death threats and was protected by sharpshooters in her hometown parade, Margot Mifflin shows how women made hard bargains even as they used the pageant for economic advancement. The pageant’s history includes, crucially, those it excluded; the notorious Rule Seven, which required contestants to be “of the white race,” was retired in the 1950s, but no women of color were crowned until the 1980s. In rigorously researched, vibrant chapters that unpack each decade of the pageant, Looking for Miss America examines the heady blend of capitalism, patriotism, class anxiety, and cultural mythology that has fueled this American ritual.
