Book excerpt: "Shereen Vedam delightfully combined Regency paranormal drama with lively characters and touches of humor. A treat to enjoy!"--NYT bestselling author Jo Beverly A tale as old as time . . . Lady Annabelle Marchant was a belle of the ball in London until she attempted to save a man's life with her psychic senses. She failed miserably, leaving him dead and her disgraced. All she wants now is a chance to comfort his widow by cleansing the woman's home of her husband's restless spirit. But the widow's son accuses her of coming to the wilds of Cheshire to snag him as a husband. Rufus Marlesbury, the beastly Earl of Terrance, is suspected of murdering his father. He has come home to clear his name by finding the real killer before the new year, or Rufus will be called in front of the House of Lords to answer for the crime. With an unruly manor ghost terrorizing the occupants, and corpses piling up in the village, Belle must find a way to uncover the man beneath the beast. Rufus, too, must learn to believe in the love of a woman who has no reason to trust him. Only by working together can they stop a killer before he strikes again . . . . Once upon a time, Shereen read fantasy and romance novels to entertain herself. Now she writes heartwarming tales braided with threads of magic and love and mystery elements woven in for good measure. She's a fan of resourceful women, intriguing men, and happily-ever-after endings. If her stories whisk you away to a different realm for a few hours, then Shereen will have achieved one of her life goals.

Book The Sexual Constitution of Political Authority

Download or read book The Sexual Constitution of Political Authority written by Aleardo Zanghellini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is no shortage of studies addressing the state’s regulation of the sexual, research into the ways in which the sexual governs the state and its attributes is still in its infancy. The Sexual Constitution of Political Authority argues that there are good reasons to suppose that our understandings of state power quiver with erotic undercurrents. The book maintains, more specifically, that the relationship between ideas of political authority and male same-sex desire is especially fraught. Through a series of case studies where a statesman’s same-sex desire was put on trial (either literally or metaphorically) as a problem for the good exercise of public powers, the book shows the resilience and adaptability of cultural beliefs in the incompatibility between public office and male same-sex desire. Some of the case studies analysed are familiar ground for both political/constitutional history and the history of sexuality. The Sexual Constitution of Political Authority argues, however, that only by systematically reading questions of institutional politics and questions of sexuality through each other will we have access to the most interesting insights that a study of these trials can generate. Whether they involve obscure public officials or iconic rulers such as Hadrian and James I, these compelling fragments of queer history reveal that the disavowal of male same-sex desire has been, and partly remains, central to mainstream understandings of political authority.

Fire shifter Daniel Trenton has only nightmarish memories of his mysterious past. As an orphan, raised on the streets, he does not have much in the way of prospects, but he is fine with that . . . until he falls in love with the daughter of a duke. Unfortunately, pursuing her would mean her social destruction. So he promises himself to leave her alone for her own good. But when her safety is threatened, Daniel has no choice but to become the hero she so desperately needs. Heiress Faith Rosemary Went always believed she would be given the choice of whom to marry. So why is her father demanding she wed a man she's never met, a man whose family terrifies her? When she resists the match, her prospective bridegroom's family kidnaps her and whisks her away to Gretna Green. Having no one to rely on, Faith sets off to rescue herself before she's ruined, or worse. Luckily, she discovers Daniel is already there. Daniel's investigation into Faith's disappearance unravels two decades of lies, multiple murders, and a fire-shifting family history that spans three centuries. His newfound discoveries put him in the position to proudly and rightfully proclaim his place in society and, more importantly, proclaim his love for Faith. But will he be able to prove the truth before Faith is forced to choose the wrong man? Once upon a time, Shereen read fantasy and romance novels to entertain herself. Now she writes heartwarming tales braided with threads of magic and love, and mystery elements woven in for good measure.
