Similar claims are made for other Asian NICs such as Taiwan. However, less understood is how the education system in South Korea became a site of intense conflict as, in the decade from 1989-99, a large movement of teachers battled with the government over development-related issues such as democratic reforms and human rights in schooling, in a struggle that divided this education-oriented society and at times plunged the nation’s schools into chaos. This book analyses the emergence of the National Teachers’ Union of Korea, Chunkyojo, and traces its struggle for educational reforms. The book examines the South Korean education system within national and global contexts and the historical experiences that have shaped the modern nation - such as its Confucianist history, its experiences of colonialism and the legacy of the Cold War conflict with North Korea. As South Korea searches for pathways for reunification, economic growth and the consolidation of democratic civil society, important new perspectives on the role of education emerge through this analysis of the teachers’ social movement. This book also presents separate chapters on teacher movements in Taiwan and the Philippines, that provide interesting comparisons to the South Korean case, while revealing the distinctive political and historical experiences that have shaped education in these societies and the emergence of reformist teacher movements. In Asia education systems have their origins in processes of state formation aimed either at bolstering 'self-strengthening' resistance to the encroachments of Western and/or Asian imperialism, or at furthering projects of post-colonial nation-building. State elites have sought to popularise powerful visions of nationhood, to equip these visions with a historical 'back-story', and to endow them with the maximum sentimental charge. This book explores all of these developments, emphasising that education is seen by nations across Asia, as elsewhere, as more than simply a tool for economic development, and that issues of national identity and the tolerance - or lack of it - of ethnic, cultural or religious diversity can be at least as important as issues of literacy and access. Interdisciplinary and unique in its analysis, this book will be of interest to scholars of political science, research in education and Asian Studies.

The twin battles of Imphal and Kohima were so fierce that in 2013, a poll conducted in London recognized these as ‘Britain’s Greatest Battle.’ But, in the history of India’s independence movement, they have largely been eclipsed. While global historical accounts have framed them as a Japanese invasion of India, the truth is they were parts of India’s armed Liberation War against British colonial rule spearheaded by the Indian National Army under Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, with the audacious ambition of uprooting the British Raj from the soil of India. British Prime Minister Churchill knew it well. However, fearing a cascading effect resulting in a nationwide uprising in support of Bose’s Liberation Army, Churchill orchestrated a smear campaign to misrepresent this attack as a mere Japanese invasion rather than acknowledging its true nationalist origins. Against this backdrop, the story eruditely recounts the gamut of India’s major revolutionary movements culminating in the full-fledged Liberation War, which was played down and belittled by the conspiracies of the Allied forces of World War II to conceal it from becoming known to the world. The book highlights how British propagandists actively embarked on a vicious slander campaign against Subhas Bose to undermine India’s quest for freedom, deliberately seeking to camouflage the daring legacy of Subhas Bose and all others. Yet, in the final analysis, the story narrates how Netaji’s Liberation War subsequently forced the British to free India.

According to the Pew Religious Diversity Index, half of the world’s most religiously diverse countries are in Asia. The presence of deep religious/worldview difference is often seen as a potential threat to socio-political cohesion or even as a source of violent conflict. Yet in Asia (as elsewhere) the degree of this diversity is not consistently associated with socio-political problems. Indeed, while religious difference is implicated in some social challenges, there are also many instances of respectful multi-faith engagement, practical collaboration, and peaceful debate. Whether or not religious/worldview difference is part of a positive pluralism depends on a complex array of legal and cultural conditions. This book explores these dynamics and contingencies in Asia, structuring the inquiry according to the theory of 'covenantal pluralism'. Covenantal pluralist theory calls for (a) a constitutional order characterized by freedom of religion/conscience and equality of rights and responsibilities, combined with (b) a culture of practical religious literacy and virtues of mutual respect and protection. Volume I offers a pioneering exploration of the prospects for this robust and non-relativistic type of pluralism in East & Southeast Asia. (Volume II examines South & Central Asia.)
