Inspired by Plutarch's remark that Calypso's Isle was only five days sailing from Britain, Felice Vinci convincingly argues that Homer's epic tales originated not in the Mediterranean, but in the northern Baltic Sea. Using meticulous geographical analysis, Vinci shows that many Homeric places, such as Troy and Ithaca, can still be identified in the geographic landscape of the Baltic. He explains how the dense, foggy weather described by Ulysses befits northern not Mediterranean climes, and how battles lasting through the night would easily have been possible in the long days of the Baltic summer. Vinci's meteorological analysis reveals how a decline of the "climatic optimum" caused the blond seafarers to migrate south to warmer climates, where they rebuilt their original world in the Mediterranean. Through many generations the memory of the heroic age and the feats performed by their ancestors in their lost homeland was preserved and handed down to the following ages, only later to be codified by Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey. Felice Vinci offers a key to open many doors that allow us to consider the age-old question of the Indo-European diaspora and the origin of the Greek civilization from a new perspective.

In the vast literature of memory written by Jewish witnesses before, during, and after WWII, Rozenbaumas’s account stands out for the singularity of his experience and for his deft narration of events of mythological dimension from a personal perspective. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War II, twelve million German expellees lost their homes in Central and Eastern Europe. The overwhelming majority came to occupied Germany. However, expellees found themselves also stranded in Western Europe, Africa and the Americas, which is often overlooked by researchers and the public. Going beyond the standard narratives of flight, vigilante evictions and transfers, this book follows expellees in West Germany and Canada and shows, for example, how German prisoners-of-war, exilees or immigrants experienced the expulsions in distant Canada. As the author illustrates making extensive use of oral histories, their experiences were an integral part of the multi-faceted expellee story even though they were physically absent from their homes. Juxtaposing the record of two countries with disparate public discourses on immigration, the author also reveals how in both countries expellees eventually adopted national identities which, based on their ethno-regional heritage, reflected their experience of extreme nationalism, war and expulsion as well as the initially difficult settlement into a new political, social and cultural environment.

In Hard Labour the forgotten voices of a group of young women who left Latvia in 1944 are captured, telling the story of their flight from the advancing Soviet Army, their difficult journeys across central Europe, their lives as displaced people in Allied camps in Germany and finally their refuge in Britain. Hard work is at the centre of these stories, as the women became 'volunteer' workers, first for the Nazi war effort and then as labourers in the British post-war reconstruction plan. In what has been described as a 'venemous postscript' to the War, the fit and able amongst the vast homeless and often stateless population that fetched up in camps run by the Allies in war-devastated Germany were recruited by western states as labourers. Great Britain was the first nation to recruit displaced persons, offering jobs in hospitals and private homes as domestic workers and in the textile industry to young single women (and later men) from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, and other once independent states. Many of these women spent the rest of their lives in Britain, longing to return to their homelands but independence came too late for many of them. At the centre of Hard Labour are the lives of twenty-five now elderly Latvia women who came to Britain between 1946 and 1949. Their memories are placed in the context of recent work in feminist history, illuminating debates about displacement and loss as well as the transformation of women's lives in post-war Britain.

This book describes the events of those two years when Royal Navy ships and men, under the command of Rear Admiral Walter Cowan, found themselves in a maelstrom of chaos and conflicting loyalties, and facing multiple opponents—the communist forces of the Red Army and Navy, led by Leon Trotsky; the gangs of freebooting German soldiers, the Freikorps, intent on keeping the Baltic states under German domination; and the White Russian forces, bent on retaking Petrograd and rebuilding the Russian Empire. During this hard-fought campaign there were successes on both sides. For example, the Royal Navy captured two destroyers that were given to the Estonians; but the submarine L-55 was sunk by Russian warships, lost with all hands. Seeking revenge in a daring sequence of attacks and using small coastal motor boats, the RN sank the cruiser Oleg and badly damaged two Russian battleships. Today few people are aware of this exhausting campaign and the sacrifices made by Royal Navy sailors, but this book retells their exciting but forgotten stories and, using much firsthand testimony, bring back to life the critical naval operations that prevented the retaking of the new Baltic countries that Churchill saw as an essential shield against the encroachment of the Bolsheviks into Europe—and resulted in an uneasy peace that would prevail until 1939.

And the signal to detonate this bomb is to be buried in a radio commercial that will saturate the airwaves until the mission is completed. However, the girl is not to turn on her implanted receiver until , either, she needs help or shes in bed with the target. None of this does Decordova know, obviously, but Shexnaider does. He knows about a pre-planned accident that will explain the surgery. He knows that this mission, disguised as reconnaissance, is actually suicide. And Jason Shexnaider, who has always done his duty, never questioning it, finds that he has a conscience after all. Decordova is to let them know shes penetrated the layers of this mans security as deeply as one could ever hope to. To his very bedroom, in fact. And, having done so, shes to tap out the tune of Lili Marlene on her kneecap, in which both the bomb and the receiver have been installed; whereupon the receiver will turn on and the next time some radio station plays the fatal commercial -- boom! Mission accomplished. Phoenix Flower is the name of thr nonexistent perfume. The campaign to promote it has been bought and paid for by Horschact. The campaign itself is the brainchild of Ward Sutton, New York ad executive, who, anticipating success and a big TV campaign to follow, selects Decordova to be his Phoenix Flowergirl. Thus bringing her to the attention of Horschact, who assigns her to Shexnaider. Its Decordovas attitude, her courageous acceptance of blindness, her stalwart willingness to serve her adopted country, albeit for the promise of a sizeable financial reward if she survives. It is these things, and above all her spirit, that convince Shexnaider shes too good to be lost this way. He talks to the department doctor, Dr. Lodi, about undoing the surgery he was ordered to perform. Its at this point that word comes down from the office of the Secretary of Intelligence that, due to recent changes in the diplomatic climate in Latin America, no missions of any kind are to be carried out in that area. Horschact is distraught. This mission is his most brilliantly planned. Its precious to him. On the other hand, it can never become known. If it were successful it never would be known. But now simply hanging what can they do to hide it? Enter Mel Strawbridge, whos been hiding in the wings since this drama began. When Guzman goes to Washington he follows her. And hes hanging around the safe house in which candidates for the mission are being quartered when Decordova takes over and Guzman moves out. His frustration has built to the point that hes become desperate. And, besides, this one is so much more attractive

Academic intrigue and politics swirl around his graduate studies at Columbia-culminating in the rejection of his Ph.D. thesis on the controversial German constitutional lawyer and political and legal theorist Carl Schmitt. Ultimately, George triumphs academically with his second dissertation on neutral countries and nuclear weapons. Marriage, fatherhood (triplet boys), family life, disproportionate in-law issues, career, association with Hans Morgenthau and the National Committee on American Foreign Policy fill the years. In the early 1980s, after the death of Morgenthau, George takes over the intellectual leadership of the National Committee. He recounts the Committee's influence and involvement with many diplomatic initiatives; a major triumph is the brokering of peace in Northern Ireland. Finally, after many years, George capitulates to Elie Wiesel's insistence that it is his duty to write his memoirs.
