I just love sunny days! A: To tell you the truth, I don’t care for them. I don’t want to get dark. D: I do. The sun helps our bodies produce vitamin D. A: Also, it’s boiling when it’s sunny and humid. D: I won’t argue with that. However, it’s so lovely when it’s sunny, dry, and just a little windy. A: Not for me. Rainy days are still the best. D: Really? Why? A: I love the sound of rain, and it makes everything smell so clean and fresh. Part B April and Dennis are changing their plans because of the weather. (Dennis = D ; April = A) D: I have some bad news. We have to cancel our picnic tomorrow. A: Why? It’s only a little cloudy. D: Well, I just checked the weather report, and a storm’s coming. A: What? I didn’t hear anything about a typhoon. D: No. I’m talking about a storm with thunder, lightning, and heavy rain. A: Oh, I see. What do you suggest we do? D: I don’t want to take any chances. Let’s put the picnic off. A: OK, if you think that’s the best thing to do. Part C April and Dennis are preparing for a bad storm. (April = A ; Dennis = D) A: Wow! It’s really foggy out. D: It’s only going to get worse, so we need to prepare for the big snow storm. A: Right. We already have warm blankets and new batteries for the flashlights. D: Good. It’s going to be really cold and snowy. A: If it drops down to freezing, then the water in the pipes will turn into ice. D: Correct, so we need to collect and save water for drinking and cleaning. A: OK. I’ll start doing that now. D: Great. I’ll check how much food we have.

Download or read book Phylogenetic Analysis of DNA Sequences written by Michael M. Miyamoto and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-11-14 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing frequency, systematic and evolutionary biologists have turned to the techniques of molecular biology to complement their traditional morphological and anatomical approaches to questions of the historical relationship and descent among groups of animals and plants. In particular, the comparative analysis of DNA sequences is becoming a common and important focus of research attention today. The objective of this volume is to survey the emerging field of molecular systematics of DNA sequences, and to appraise the strengths and limitations of the different approaches yielded by these techniques. The contributors are an internationally recognized group of investigators from different schools and disciplines who critically address a diversity of crucial questions about DNA systematics, including DNA sequence data acquisition, phylogenetic inference, congruence and consensus problems, limitations of molecular data, and the integration of molecular and morphological data sets. The work will interest all botanists and zoologists involved in systematics, taxonomy, and evolution.
Download or read book Milosz s ABC s written by Czeslaw Milosz and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2002-01-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Man has been given to understand/ that he lives only by the grace of those in power./ Let him therefore busy himself sipping coffee, catching butterflies." So muses Polish migr poet and Nobel laureate Milosz in one of his earlier poems, and such might be the principle guiding this most recent collection of his writings. Bits and pieces of memoir are ranged in alphabetical order, making up a curious glossary of a life lived in Poland and the United States and a literary career spanning six decades. Reminiscences of Poland before, during and after WWII occupy much of the volume. Even when Milosz is chronicling his life since he settled permanently in California in 1960, after a period of exile in France, his memories center on friends made in childhood at school in Wilno. Brief character sketches are intermixed with reflections on subjects like Milosz's sense of obligation to the Polish language and Polish literary tradition, his admiration of poets like Walt Whitman and Joseph Brodsky, and, more generally, on themes like curiosity, fame and terror. It is these sections that will engage American readers, who elsewhere are likely to flounder in a sea of names. The fragments of autobiography collected in this edition represent only a selection from the texts of two Polish ABCs, and readers will be grateful for the culling. It is difficult to escape the sense thatDlike butterflies in a dusty caseDthe scraps of memory affixed here have lost their living glitter."--Summary from Publisher
