Book A B C of Vegetable Gardening Classic Reprint

Download or read book A B C of Vegetable Gardening Classic Reprint written by Eben E. Rexford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A-B-C of Vegetable Gardening Another notion is, that in order to have a good garden a large amount of time and labor must be expended on it. Not so. A very small amount of systematized labor will be demanded by even a good-sized garden, if it is planned in such a manner that labor - sav ing tools can be used in its cultivation. If we look'back to the gardening days of fifty or even twenty-five years ago, when every thing was done at the hardest and the hand had to do a good share of the work that we now do with helpful implements, it is not to be wondered at that the old-time care of a garden discourages many from undertaking to have one. Happily those days are over, and with the gardening facilities of the present it is an easy matter to accomplish more in an hour than could be done then in a day. There is really no drudgery in gardening as it is done to - day. On the contrary, there is posi tive pleasure in the operation of the ma chinery which inventive genius has furnished for the up-to-date gardener's use. Book excerpt: A-B-C Of Vegetable Gardening This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book The Principles of Vegetable Gardening Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Vegetable Gardening Classic Reprint written by L. H. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Vegetable-Gardening Market-gardening is the growing of vegetables for sale. The American term truck-gardening is really synonymous, although it is sometimes used in connec tion with the larger market-gardening enterprises. An arbitrary distinction between market-gardening and truck gardening was made by J. H. Hale in the work for the Eleventh Census. In Bulletin 41 of the Census Bureau, truck gardening is understood as the business carried on in favored localities at a distance from market, water and rail transportation being necessary, while market-gardening is conducted near local mar kets, the grower of vegetables using his own team for transporting his products direct to either the retailer or consumer. This distinction is not a fundamental one, and is not the general understanding of the terms; but it seemed to be necessary, for statistical reasons, to make the separation. Book The Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden

Download or read book The Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden written by Karen Newcomb and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best books for beginning and experienced vegetable gardeners, this clear, straightforward, easy-to-read gardening bestseller (over 500,000 copies sold) uses organic, biodynamic methods to produce large amounts of vegetables in very small spaces. To accommodate today's lifestyles, a garden needs to fit easily into a very small plot, take as little time as possible to maintain, require a minimum amount of water, and still produce prolifically. That's exactly what a postage stamp garden does. Postage stamp gardens are as little as 4 by 4 feet, and, after the initial soil preparation, they require very little extra work to produce a tremendous amount of vegetables--for instance, a 5-by-5-foot bed will produce a minimum of 200 pounds of vegetables. When first published 40 years ago, the postage stamp techniques, including closely planted beds rather than rows, vines and trailing plants grown vertically to free up space, and intercropping, were groundbreaking. Revised for an all new generation of gardeners, this edition includes brand new information on the variety of heirloom vegetables available today and how to grow them the postage stamp way. Now, in an ever busier world, the postage stamp intensive gardening method continues to be invaluable for gardeners who wish to weed, water, and work a whole lot less yet produce so much more.

It is the love of all that is outdoors, and Dame Experience's sharp but unforgettable lessons, together with the many things we have learned from books and friends, that have made it possible for us to write this volume. May it make warm friends and help others to enjoy their garden more than ever before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garden Steps a Manual for the Amateur in Vegetable Gardening The food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the house which shelters us, are three great necessities of life. Of these three necessities, food is by far. The most important. The ordinary family plans to spend a large part of the daily wages for food. If times are bad, we can' live in smaller houses and be very comfortable. We can wear the same clothes twice as long as we expected to, and still not suffer from the cold. But with food it is very different. We must constantly provide ourselves with a nourishing diet, or our strength fails, health gives way, and great suffering is the final result. For a useful and happy existence, nourishing food is of the first importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A-B-C of Vegetable Gardening Not everybody has a garden. Some deny themselves the pleasure and the profit of one because they have never had any experience in gardening, and have somehow got the impression that special training is necessary to make a success of the undertaking. Here is where they make a mistake. There is no special "knack" about it. Any one who owns a bit of land, and has some time that can be given to garden-work, and an inclination to do so, can make a gardener of himself in a season - and a successful one, too - if he allows himself to be governed by the advice of some one who has had some experience along this line. Book The Home Vegetable Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Home Vegetable Garden Classic Reprint written by Henry Albert Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Vegetable Garden Fig. 1. - Fall vegetable gardens grown by students at the University Farm, Davis. Almost all varieties of vegetables were planted the third week of August, and almost all were harvested before the middle of December. The varieties and crops grown were Snowball cauliflower, Copenhagen Market cabbage, Southern Curled mustard, Scotch Curled kale, Paris White Cos lettuce, New York lettuce, Chantenay carrots, Detroit Dark Red beets, Paoting Chinese cabbage, Purple Vienna kohlrabi, Large White rutabaga, Purple Top White Globe turnip, Savoy spinach, Prickly Winter spinach, green bunch onions from dry sets, and Bountiful beans. The garden should be located near a faucet or an irrigation line in order to insure an adequate supply of water. Most vegetables need considerable moisture to keep them growing and to make them good edible quality. It is also best to have the garden protected from the prevailing winds, especially if these are drying and severe. Proximity to large trees should be avoided, as most crops need full sunlight, and as the trees use the plant food and soil moisture for a considerable distance on all sides. Some crops, however, such as spinach and lettuce, do fairly well growing in partial shade, especially during the warm season.
