Book A 0 D Scaling Approach to the DIII D L H Power Threshold in the Presence of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations

Download or read book A 0 D Scaling Approach to the DIII D L H Power Threshold in the Presence of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations written by Michael Hanson and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report a DIII-D database study of the H-mode power threshold over a wide range of plasma conditions and in the presence of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs). This database consisting of global (i.e. averaged) quantities is first compared to the 2008 ITPA database and the resulting L-H power scaling [38]. Since ELM control is critical for ITER, and applied 3D fields will likely be present prior to the transition into the H-mode, this study is important for assessing the impact of RMP ELM suppression on the L-H power threshold. The L-H transition has been studied extensively and is dependent on the physical and magnetic divertor geometry, shear flows, and drifts, among other parameters, some of which are altered by RMP fields. In order to understand the effects of RMPs on the L-H threshold, we attempt to make a robust empirical model, using only DIII-D data, that includes magnitudes and the toroidal modes of various resonant and non-resonant 3D fields. In addition, we assess the validity of previous assumptions about fast ion losses, as well as the usefulness of 0-D database regressions for extrapolation to ITER. Results from this database study show the standard 0-D parameters to be insufficient for capturing the complex L-H transition physics at a level high enough to provide an extrapolation to ITER with reasonable certainty.

Book JET DIII D Size Scaling of the H mode Power Threshold

Download or read book JET DIII D Size Scaling of the H mode Power Threshold written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous scaling results indicate that the H-mode power threshold increases nearly linearly with the line averaged density, {bar n}{sub e}, and the toroidal field, B{sub t}. The power threshold was measured in similar, ITER-like, discharges in JET and DIII-D, at the same {bar n}{sub e} and B{sub t} in order to determine the size scaling of the power threshold. The results indicate a size scaling proportional to the surface area, S{sup 0.5}, which is weaker than the linear surface area dependence previously assumed.

Book Calculation of the Thermal Footprint of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations in DIII D

Download or read book Calculation of the Thermal Footprint of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations in DIII D written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of resonant magnetic perturbations on heat transport in DIII-D H-mode plasmas has been calculated by combining the TRIP3D field-line tracing code with the E3D two-fluid transport code. Simulations show that the divertor heat flux distribution becomes non-axisymmetric because heat flux is efficiently guided to the divertor along the three-dimensional invariant manifolds of the magnetic field. Calculations demonstrate that heat flux is spread over a wider area of the divertor target, thereby reducing the peak heat flux delivered during steady-state operation. Filtered optical cameras have observed non-axisymmetric particle fluxes at the strike-point and Langmuir probes have observed non-axisymmetric floating potentials. On the other hand, the predicted magnitude of stochastic thermal transport is too large to match the pedestal plasma profiles measured by Thomson scattering and charge exchange recombination spectroscopy. The Braginskii thermal conductivity overestimates the expected heat transport in the pedestal because the mean free path is longer than estimates of the parallel thermal correlation length, and collisionless transport models are probably required for accurate description. However, even the collisionless estimates for electron thermal transport are too large by one to two orders of magnitude. Thus, it is likely that another mechanism such as rotational screening of resonant perturbations limits the stochastic region and reduces transport inside of the pedestal.

Book Error Field Detection in DIII D by Magnetic Steering of Locked Modes

Download or read book Error Field Detection in DIII D by Magnetic Steering of Locked Modes written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal correction coil currents for the n = 1 intrinsic error field of the DIII-D tokamak are inferred by applying a rotating external magnetic perturbation to steer the phase of a saturated locked mode with poloidal/toroidal mode number m/n = 2/1. The error field is detected non-disruptively in a single discharge, based on the toroidal torque balance of the resonant surface, which is assumed to be dominated by the balance of resonant electromagnetic torques. This is equivalent to the island being locked at all times to the resonant 2/1 component of the total of the applied and intrinsic error fields, such that the deviation of the locked mode phase from the applied field phase depends on the existing error field. The optimal set of correction coil currents is determined to be those currents which best cancels the torque from the error field, based on fitting of the torque balance model. The toroidal electromagnetic torques are calculated from experimental data using a simplified approach incorporating realistic DIII-D geometry, and including the effect of the plasma response on island torque balance based on the ideal plasma response to external fields. This method of error field detection is demonstrated in DIII-D discharges, and the results are compared with those based on the onset of low-density locked modes in ohmic plasmas. Furthermore, this magnetic steering technique presents an efficient approach to error field detection and is a promising method for ITER, particularly during initial operation when the lack of auxiliary heating systems makes established techniques based on rotation or plasma amplification unsuitable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The masses of neutron stars are limited by an instability to gravitational collapse and an instability driven by gravitational waves limits their spin. Their oscillations are relevant to x-ray observations of accreting binaries and to gravitational wave observations of neutron stars formed during the coalescence of double neutron-star systems. This volume includes more than forty years of research to provide graduate students and researchers in astrophysics, gravitational physics and astronomy with the first self-contained treatment of the structure, stability and oscillations of rotating neutron stars. This monograph treats the equations of stellar equilibrium; key approximations, including slow rotation and perturbations of spherical and rotating stars; stability theory and its applications, from convective stability to the r-mode instability; and numerical methods for computing equilibrium configurations and the nonlinear evolution of their oscillations. The presentation of fundamental equations, results and applications is accessible to readers who do not need the detailed derivations.

Book Deep Brain Stimulation

Download or read book Deep Brain Stimulation written by Kelvin L. Chou, MD and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12-21 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, an estimated 42 million people suffer from some form of movement disorder. Common movement disorders include Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), and dystonia. Although medications may be helpful for these conditions, in many patients, symptoms cannot be controlled with medications alone. In such situations, their physicians may recommend a surgical procedure known as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). DBS is a revolutionary technology using an implanted device to deliver electrical stimulation to the brain to help symptoms, alleviate suffering, and improve quality of life. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved DBS as a treatment for essential tremor in 1997, for Parkinson's disease in 2002, and dystonia in 2003. Deep brain stimulation has dramatically changed the lives of many patients with uncontrollable tremors. Patients often can resume normal activities, such as feeding and dressing themselves, and can have active and fulfilling lives. The need for anti-tremor medications is often reduced or eliminated. Though it's no longer considered experimental, DBS is, for now, still used as a second- or third-line treatment, reserved for patients with more advanced cases of the disease and those for whom medication alone is inadequate or can't be adjusted precisely enough to keep their tremors and writhing under control. However the idea of this surgery being a "last resort" is an evolving concept. Ten years ago doctors were operating on only the most severe, disabled, wheelchair-dependent patients, now they are operating on patients with moderate-to-severe cases of PD, ET and Dystonia. The thought is that this trend will continue. Instead of saying "wait another five to ten years until you become more disabled" doctors are realizing that the earlier they use DBS, the more they can improve the quality of life of their patients.
