The first fifteen years following its organization in 1866 were stained by mutinies, slanderous verbal assaults, and sadistic abuses by their officers. Eventually, however, a number of considerate and dedicated officers, including Major Guy Henry, Captain Charles Parker, and Lieutenant Matthais Day, in cooperation with capable noncommissioned officers such as George Mason, Madison Ingoman, and Moses Williams, created an elite and well-disciplined fighting unit that won the respect of all but the most racist whites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virginia 9th Cavalry Regiment was formed in January, 1862, using the 1st Battalion Virginia Cavalry as its nucleus. Its companies were from the counties of Stafford, Caroline, Westmoreland, Lancaster, Essex, Spotsylvania, Lunenburg, King William, King George, and Richmond. It fought in the Seven Days' Battles and the conflicts at Gainesville, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Dumfries, Rapidan Station, Brandy Station, Upperville, Hanover, Gettysburg, Williamsport, Funkstown, and Culpeper Court House. The 9th went on to fight at Bristoe, Mine Run, The Wilderness, and Todd's Tavern. Later it skirmished around Richmond and Petersburg, then was active in the Appomattox operations. This unit reported 32 casualties at Upperville, lost four percent of the 490 engaged at Gettysburg, and had 22 disabled at Williamsport. Book excerpt: The Tennessee 9th Cavalry Regiment was organized at Camp Nelson from East Tennessee refugees in the early part of 1863, with Joseph H. Parsons, of Knox county, as colonel. It assisted in the capture of Cumberland gap, after which it escorted the prisoners to Lexington, Ky. Returning to Knoxville, it remained there until after the siege of that place, and was then detailed to escort prisoners to Camp Nelson, from which place it was ordered to Nashville, where it arrived in January and remained until about May 1st. It was stationed at Gallatin from that time until August, when it was constituted a portion of the brigade known as the "Governor's Guards," under the command of Gen. Gillem, which then entered upon a campaign in East Tennessee. It participated with great gallantry in all the battles of that campaign, and at Bull's gap a large portion of the regiment was taken prisoners. A large part of the 11th cavalry having also been captured it was consolidated with the remainder of the 9th. On March 21, 1865, it entered upon the raid through Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia under Gen. Stoneman. It returned to Tennessee in May and was mustered out at Knoxville in Sept., 1865.

Book excerpt: The Tennessee 9th Cavalry Battalion was organized and mustered into Confederate service at Camp Maury, near Nashville, Tennessee, in December, 1861. A seventh company, made up of transfers and men from Hickman County, was added in October, 1864. The unit was assigned to the Western Department, and all but Company C were captured in the fight at Fort Donelson. They were exchanged in September, 1862, remounted in January, 1863, and attached to Wirt Adams, H.B. Davidson's, Humes', and H. M. Ashby's Brigade. The battalion skirmished the Federals in Mississippi and Louisiana, was involved in the Atlanta Campaign. The battalion served in the defense of Savannah, then part served with Wheeler in Georgia and part in Tennessee. After various engagements in the Carolinas including Broxton Bridge, Rivers Bridge, the Battle of Aiken, Columbia and Bentonville, it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.
