Book Brazilian Theater 1970 2010

Download or read book Brazilian Theater 1970 2010 written by Eva Paulino Bueno and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Brazilian theater survive under the military dictatorship of 1964-1985? How did it change once the regime was over? This collection of new essays is the first to cover Brazilian theater during this period. Brazilian scholars and artists discuss the history of a theater community that not only resisted the regime but reinvented itself and continued to develop more sophisticated forms of expression even in the face of competition from television and other media. The contributors recount the struggle to stage meaningful plays at a time when some artists and intellectuals were exiled, others imprisoned, tortured or killed. With the return of democracy other important issues arose: how to ensure space for different practices and for regional theater, and how to continue producing international plays that could be meaningful for a Brazilian audience.

Book Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Detective Fiction

Download or read book Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Detective Fiction written by Renée W. Craig-Odders and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the hard-boiled private investigator from gritty pulp fiction, a terse and mysterious figure, has become increasingly universal as the detective novel crosses more and more borders. A booming genre in Latin America, Spain and other Hispanic cultures, detective fiction has transcended the limitations of its influences. Hispanic authors relatively new to the genre have published novels and series popular with the public, while a number of well-known writers have adapted the genre to reflect the concurrent globalization of modern society and the crimes within it. This volume presents a compilation of 11 critical essays on genero negro--contemporary detective fiction in the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian canon. Surveying the last twenty years, the text analyzes emerging trends in this rapidly evolving genre, as well as the mutations and innovations taking place within the style. The first section of the book is dedicated to the detective fiction of Spain and Portugal. The second section surveys works from Latin America and the United States, where topics touch on universal subjects like crime, identity and feminism.

Book Sex Skulls and Citizens

Download or read book Sex Skulls and Citizens written by Ashley Elizabeth Kerr and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PROSE Awards Subject Category Finalist—Biological Anthropology, Ancient History, and Archaeology, 2021 Best Nineteenth-Century Book Award, Latin American Studies Association Nineteenth-Century Section, 2021 Analyzing a wide variety of late-nineteenth-century sources, Sex, Skulls, and Citizens argues that Argentine scientific projects of the era were not just racial encounters, but were also conditioned by sexual relationships in all their messy, physical reality. The writers studied here (an eclectic group of scientists, anthropologists, and novelists, including Estanislao Zeballos, Lucio and Eduarda Mansilla, Ramón Lista, and Florence Dixie) reflect on Indigenous sexual practices, analyze the advisability and effects of interracial sex, and use the language of desire to narrate encounters with Indigenous peoples as they try to scientifically pinpoint Argentina's racial identity and future potential. Kerr's reach extends into history of science, literary studies, and history of anthropology, illuminating a scholarly time and place in which the lines betwixt were much blurrier, if they existed at all.
