Book People that Changed the Course of History

Download or read book People that Changed the Course of History written by Hannah Sandoval and published by Atlantic Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although you may not recognize the name of this famous American architect, you may be more familiar with some of his most popular buildings. From the Guggenheim Museum in New York City to Fallingwater in Pennsylvania, Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic designs have given him the distinction of being the first architect to develop a distinctly American style. Learn more about this critically acclaimed architect during the 150th anniversary of his birth. Wright was born on June 8, 1867 in Richland Center, Wisconsin. During his childhood, Wright spent his summers in Wisconsin, and fell in love with the rolling landscape. This inspired him as an architect to incorporate a more organic feel into his buildings. While in college, Wright worked with an architect in order to pay his tuition. Upon discovering his own passion and talent for the subject, he dropped out of school and went to work for an architectural firm in Chicago. He eventually parted ways with the firm and began designing a series of public buildings and private residencies that earned him fame, including the “earthquake proof” Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. Due to the Great Depression, Lloyd stepped back from designing and began writing and teaching. It seemed that he had permanently retired from architecture when, in 1935, he returned to the scene. Before his death, he designed some of his most famous buildings including Fallingwater, regarded as one of the most beautiful homes ever built, and the Guggenheim Museum. Take a closer look at Frank Lloyd Wright and his creation of a wholly American style of architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Black clubwomen to members of preservation organizations, African American women have made commemoration a central part of Black life and culture. Alexandria Russell illuminates the process of memorialization while placing African American women at the center of memorials they brought into being and others constructed in their honor. Their often undocumented and unheralded work reveals the importance of the memorializers and public memory crafters in establishing a culture of recognition. Forced to strategize with limited resources, the women operated with a resourcefulness and savvy that had to meet challenges raised by racism, gender and class discrimination, and specific regional difficulties. Yet their efforts from the 1890s to the 2020s shaped and honed practices that became indispensable to the everyday life and culture of Black Americans. Intersectional and original, Black Women Legacies explores the memorialization of African American women and its distinctive impact on physical and cultural landscapes throughout the United States.

Book What It Takes

Download or read book What It Takes written by Raegan Moya-Jones and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A USA Today and LA Times Bestseller! “A force to be reckoned with. Funny, creative, and full of courage and charming sass. What It Takes will give you the tools you need to create your own success story.” —Sarah Kauss, founder and CEO of S’well “An inspiring story for anyone who wants to change their career, play by their own rules, and build a successful business in the process.” —Rebecca Minkoff, founder and creative director Founder of global baby brand aden + anais Raegan Moya-Jones doesn’t hold back on what it really takes to build a $100 million business from her kitchen table. Raegan Moya-Jones never thought of herself as an entrepreneur. She was full-time corporate cog in her thirties, with a family to help support. Sick of her micromanaging boss, she quietly started a company in the wee hours of the morning while her daughters were asleep—and once that side business, aden + anais, hit the $1 million mark in revenue, she quit to work on it full-time, which now generates over $100 million a year in revenue. In this riveting, vulnerable story, What It Takes is Moya-Jones’ tell-all and brutally honest advice to entrepreneurs—especially women—about how to succeed despite all odds. It doesn’t take an MBA to be your own boss. If Moya-Jones, an outspoken Aussie and college drop-out, could build a business from the ground up, anyone can. Moya-Jones digs into topics most entrepreneurs shy away from, even the prickliest of things like mother guilt, butting heads with investors (or co-founders), and what to really do when you’re running out of money. There’s no magic formula to build a business, which also mean you don’t have to look or act a certain way to be successful. This empowering story from one of today’s most fascinating founders will show the hopeful entrepreneur or career changer that she doesn't have to know it all. This story is about staying true to who you are, trusting your gut, and harnessing your unique talent. Do you have what it takes to jump in?

Book Intellectuals and Civil Society in the Middle East

Download or read book Intellectuals and Civil Society in the Middle East written by Mohammed A. Bamyeh and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the nature of intellectual activity in the Middle East, and what is its role in politics and society? While much scholarly attention has been given to the intelligentsia in the West, a comprehensive analysis of the social role of intellectuals in the Middle East has until now been lacking. This new book seeks to fill this gap, providing an overview of the role of influential thinkers in public life in the Middle East, and the impact they have had upon social, political and cultural spheres in the region. Covering a diverse range of key thinkers on the Middle East from Edward Said, Mohamed Arkoun and Halim Barakat to Abd al-Rahman al-Kawakibi and Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulusi, the book examines intellectuals' connections to social movements, 'street politics' and civil society, and democracy and its prospects in the region. This is an important new contribution to the literature on Middle Eastern societies and politics.
