Book excerpt: Written by dispatcher Denise Stephenson, a crucial "first responder" in the Hurricane Katrina disaster as a member of Mississippis Waveland police department, this volume presents a very real portrait of a calamity that shattered the homes, lives and dreams of many Americans - a compelling episode which the author calls 911 FROM AN INSIDE LINE. Uniquely different from other books on the subject, this work not only captures the harrowing event as it happened, but also reveals an unforgettable documentation of pain, defeat, triumph and redemption as it chronicles not only her own recovery process, but that of a community as well - through the eyes of an actual witness.
Download or read book How the Internal Revenue Service Selects Individual Income Tax Returns for Audit Department of the Treasury written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GAO reviewed the process used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to select individual tax returns for audit. GAO found that most tax returns are selected for audit by a computer or a person other than the examiners who will audit them, and procedures generally protect the taxpayer against abuse. At district offices, most returns are selected because they have good audit potential. About 70 percent of returns audited by district offices are selected by a two-stage system. Returns are first scored as to their audit potential by a computer using sophisticated mathematical formulas. The highest scored returns are then manually screened to determine if an audit is warranted, and, in most cases, what items of income and deductions should be examined. Examiners can sometimes request returns for audit without having to explain why they need them. Overpayers are less likely to have their returns audited than those who underpay. Not enough is known about why taxpayers do or do not comply with the tax laws.

Download or read book No One Helped written by Marcia M. Gallo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "No One Helped" Marcia M. Gallo examines one of America's most infamous true-crime stories: the 1964 rape and murder of Catherine "Kitty" Genovese in a middle-class neighborhood of Queens, New York. Front-page reports in the New York Times incorrectly identified thirty-eight indifferent witnesses to the crime, fueling fears of apathy and urban decay. Genovese's life, including her lesbian relationship, also was obscured in media accounts of the crime. Fifty years later, the story of Kitty Genovese continues to circulate in popular culture. Although it is now widely known that there were far fewer actual witnesses to the crime than was reported in 1964, the moral of the story continues to be urban apathy. "No One Helped" traces the Genovese story's development and resilience while challenging the myth it created."No One Helped" places the conscious creation and promotion of the Genovese story within a changing urban environment. Gallo reviews New York's shifting racial and economic demographics and explores post–World War II examinations of conscience regarding the horrors of Nazism. These were important factors in the uncritical acceptance of the story by most media, political leaders, and the public despite repeated protests from Genovese's Kew Gardens neighbors at their inaccurate portrayal. The crime led to advances in criminal justice and psychology, such as the development of the 911 emergency system and numerous studies of bystander behaviors. Gallo emphasizes that the response to the crime also led to increased community organizing as well as feminist campaigns against sexual violence. Even though the particulars of the sad story of her death were distorted, Kitty Genovese left an enduring legacy of positive changes to the urban environment.
