The Ecuadorian authorities have continued to make progress in strengthening the country’s fiscal and external positions and have appropriately recalibrated their economic program to include a more moderate fiscal consolidation and international reserves’ paths in response to recent developments and to protect pro-poor growth and social spending. Public financial management reforms are paramount to secure fiscal sustainability in the longer term. Book A European Central Bank Standing Guard over a European Currency Union

Download or read book A European Central Bank Standing Guard over a European Currency Union written by Jan Meyers and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this year of the euro’s 25th anniversary, the book revisits the architecture of the European currency union as it continues to evolve and faces today’s concurrent challenges posed by its members’ high and diverging government debt levels, debt sustainability concerns, and the considerable public expenditures, investments and reforms needed in particular to address climate change and the green transition. Key components reviewed include the single monetary policy for the eurozone; the common rules and processes for keeping a measure of discipline and orderliness in the members’ economic and budgetary policies; the containment of financial fragmentation within the eurozone; and stability support for members under financial stress. The book focuses on the central role of the European Central Bank (ECB) and considers such issues as: how the ECB has defined its monetary policy mandate and calibrated its actions within the matrix of broadly worded objectives and constraints set by the EU Treaties; the possible tensions and trade-offs between the ECB’s primary mission of inflation control and the episodic need to avert risks to financial stability, contain financial fragmentation and preserve the cohesion of the European currency union; the difficulties of a single monetary policy interacting with the relative heterogeneity of economic characteristics and national fiscal policies across the eurozone; the ECB’s possible role in supporting the transition to a lower-carbon economy; and how judicial review by the European Court of Justice has to contend with the complexities and inherent uncertainties of monetary analysis and the ECB’s need of a broad margin of policy judgment. As part of the EU’s incomplete economic and monetary union, the currency union remains a work in progress. The challenges and choices at hand present serious legal questions that cannot be viewed in isolation from the economic and political issues—a kind of 3D combination puzzle to be solved.

Book excerpt: The Chinese Communist Party is determined to reshape the world in its image. The party is not interested in democracy. It sees only a bitter ideological struggle with the West, dividing the world into those who can be won over, and enemies. Many political and business elites have already been lured to their corner; others are weighing up a devil’s bargain. Through its enormous economic power and covert influence operations, China is now weakening global institutions, aggressively targeting individual corporations, and threatening freedom of expression from the arts to academia. At the same time, Western security services are increasingly worried about incursions into our communications infrastructure. In a landmark study combining meticulous research with unique insights, Hidden Hand exposes the Chinese Communist Party’s global program of subversion, and the threat it poses to democracy. We have already missed too many warning signs – now it is time to wake up.

Book The Singapore Mall Generation

Download or read book The Singapore Mall Generation written by Dr Liew Kai Khiun and published by Marshall Cavendish International Asia Pte Ltd. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yesterday’s malls as today’s heritage. This book unearths Singapore’s latent histories, cultures and communities that grew within its now ageing modern shopping centres, envisioned in the 1960s futuristically as “Arcades in the Air”. Contributors for this edited book highlight some of such unexpected narratives from the pioneering “Planned Shopping Centres”. They include: malls as historical and photographical sites, as homes for pioneering arcade gamers, youths cultures and veteran rock musicians, and as platforms for artistic imaginations and exhibitions. As largely individually owned shops units within the buildings, the older malls have also fostered more diverse and autonomous communities and businesses. Amidst Singapore’s constantly changing urban landscape, these otherwise dated shopping centres stand precariously as venerable sites of collective social and cultural memories. Includes essays from: Chua Beng Huat, Yu-Mei Balasingamchow, Darren Soh, Roy Kheang, Eunice Lim, Elena Yeo, Steve Ferzacca, Kar-men Cheng, Wee Li Lin
