Book Moduli Spaces of Riemann Surfaces

Download or read book Moduli Spaces of Riemann Surfaces written by Benson Farb and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mapping class groups and moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces were the topics of the Graduate Summer School at the 2011 IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute. This book presents the nine different lecture series comprising the summer school, covering a selection of topics of current interest. The introductory courses treat mapping class groups and Teichmüller theory. The more advanced courses cover intersection theory on moduli spaces, the dynamics of polygonal billiards and moduli spaces, the stable cohomology of mapping class groups, the structure of Torelli groups, and arithmetic mapping class groups. The courses consist of a set of intensive short lectures offered by leaders in the field, designed to introduce students to exciting, current research in mathematics. These lectures do not duplicate standard courses available elsewhere. The book should be a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers interested in the topology, geometry and dynamics of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces and related topics. Titles in this series are co-published with the Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute. Members of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) receive a 20% discount from list price.

Book Quantum Theory and Symmetries

Download or read book Quantum Theory and Symmetries written by M. B. Paranjape and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the CRM Conference Series is based on a carefully refereed selection of contributions presented at the "11th International Symposium on Quantum Theory and Symmetries", held in Montreal, Canada from July 1-5, 2019. The main objective of the meeting was to share and make accessible new research and recent results in several branches of Theoretical and Mathematical Physics, including Algebraic Methods, Condensed Matter Physics, Cosmology and Gravitation, Integrability, Non-perturbative Quantum Field Theory, Particle Physics, Quantum Computing and Quantum Information Theory, and String/ADS-CFT. There was also a special session in honour of Decio Levi. The volume is divided into sections corresponding to the sessions held during the symposium, allowing the reader to appreciate both the homogeneity and the diversity of mathematical tools that have been applied in these subject areas. Several of the plenary speakers, who are internationally recognized experts in their fields, have contributed reviews of the main topics to complement the original contributions. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Einstein's steadfast refusal to accept certain aspects of quantum theory was rooted in his insistence that physics has to be about reality. Accordingly, he once derided as "spooky action at a distance" the notion that two elementary particles far removed from each other could nonetheless influence each other's properties—a hypothetical phenomenon his fellow theorist Erwin Schrödinger termed "quantum entanglement." In a series of ingenious experiments conducted in various locations—from a dank sewage tunnel under the Danube River to the balmy air between a pair of mountain peaks in the Canary Islands—the author and his colleagues have demonstrated the reality of such entanglement using photons, or light quanta, created by laser beams. In principle the lessons learned may be applicable in other areas, including the eventual development of quantum computers.

Book The Age of Entanglement

Download or read book The Age of Entanglement written by Louisa Gilder and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Age of Entanglement, Louisa Gilder brings to life one of the pivotal debates in twentieth century physics. In 1935, Albert Einstein famously showed that, according to the quantum theory, separated particles could act as if intimately connected–a phenomenon which he derisively described as “spooky action at a distance.” In that same year, Erwin Schrödinger christened this correlation “entanglement.” Yet its existence was mostly ignored until 1964, when the Irish physicist John Bell demonstrated just how strange this entanglement really was. Drawing on the papers, letters, and memoirs of the twentieth century’s greatest physicists, Gilder both humanizes and dramatizes the story by employing the scientists’ own words in imagined face-to-face dialogues. The result is a richly illuminating exploration of one of the most exciting concepts of quantum physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Illinois University at Carbondale undertook to honor Albert Einstein as scientist and as humanitarian in commemo ration of his lOOth birthday during an "Albert Einstein Centennial Week", February 23 - March 2, 1979. During the course of this week two Symposia were held, entitled "Symmetries in Science" and "Einstein: Humanities Conscience", in addition to cultural and social activities honoring Einstein. This volume presents the Symposium "Symmetries in Science". It reflects the outstanding response that was given to our "Albert Einstein Centennial Week" by the international community of scientists. The motivation to have a celebration honoring Albert Einstein at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale was supplied by Dr. Paul A. Schilpp, the editor of the "Library of Living Philo sophers". Albert Einstein has contributed to this series with his autobiographical notes, a kind of autobiography of his scientific life, in a volume entitled "Einstein: Scientist-Philosopher", the most popular among all the outstanding volumes of this series. Dr. Paul A. Schilpp's presence at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale provided a natural link for an Einstein Celebration as a kind of a continuation of the contribution he made to mankind through the Einstein volume of his "Library of Living Philosophers".

Book Quantum Symmetries

Download or read book Quantum Symmetries written by Alain Connes and published by North-Holland. This book was released on 1998 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. One of the greatest challenges that theoretical physics faces at the end of the century is to blend together the two revolutions of the beginning of the century, namely general relativity and quantum mechanics. One message that has become clear from the start and is common to both revolutions is that there is no limit to the level of sophistication of mathematics that will become essential to physics. This book comprises the lecture notes of the 1995 Les Houches Summer School. The aim of the school was to cover a wide range of areas, from theoretical physics to abstract mathematics, that are relevant in the search of a quantum theory of gravity. The lectures provide a systematic introduction to topological and conformal field theories, supersymmetry and super Yang-Mills theories, string theory and superstring dualities, integrable lattice models and quantum groups, non commutative geometry and the theory of diffeomorphism groups. It is di

Book 10th European Conference on Mixing

Download or read book 10th European Conference on Mixing written by Harry E.A. Van den Akker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-06-14 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, fluid mixing and the related multiphase contacting processes have always been regarded as an empirical technology. Many aspects of mixing, dispersing and contacting were related to power draw, but understanding of the phenomena was limited or qualitative at the most. In particular during the last decade, however, plant operation targets have tightened and product specifications have become stricter. The public awareness as to safety and environmental hygiene has increased. The drive towards larger degrees of sustainability in the process industries has urged for lower amounts of solvents and for higher yields and higher selectivities in chemical reactors. All this has resulted in a market pull: the need for more detailed insights in flow phenomena and processes and for better verifiable design and operation methods. Developments in miniaturisation of sensors and circuits as well as in computer technology have rendered leaps possible in computer simulation and animation and in measuring and monitoring techniques. This volume encourages a leap forward in the field of mixing by the current, overwhelming wealth of sophisticated measuring and computational techniques. This leap may be made possible by modern instrumentation, signal and data analysis, field reconstruction algorithms, computational modelling techniques and numerical recipes.
