This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chartered in 1869, Southern Illinois University has been a stalwart presence on the southern Illinois landscape for a century and a half. This book celebrates the 150th anniversary of the university’s founding by exploring in depth its history since 1969, when the last book to celebrate a major anniversary was published. Chapters reflect on SIU’s successful athletics program, the various colleges and departments within the university, the diverse holdings and collections of the library, the unique innovative research enterprises, and special programs such as the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and Touch of Nature Environmental Center. Although SIU may be a typical large public university in many ways, its unique location, history, and culture have made it a distinct institution of higher education. Located close to the Shawnee National Forest and Giant City State Park, the landscape is an indelible part of SIU, contributing to both the beauty of the university grounds and the campus culture. The university’s sesquicentennial provides a wonderful opportunity to revisit all that makes SIU amazing. Illustrated with 306 photographs of theater and music performances, art, sports, past and present students, faculty, staff, administration, politicians, community members, successful alums, distinguished visitors, and patrons of the university buildings, and landscapes, Southern Illinois University at 150 Years captures the university’s story in all its vivid color.
Download or read book Rutherford written by William Neumann and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rutherford traces its original settler and earliest history to a 17th-century Dutch family, one of the first to arrive in the nascent colony of New Netherland. Throughout the next 12 generations, this family joined thousands of others to create a quaint oasis just beyond New York City. In 1835, the sleepy farm village greeted the arrival of one of America's first railroads with wonder and anticipation. The long history of Rutherford is rich with pioneers in government, education, the arts, medicine, and commerce. In the 1880s, a local attorney sparked a revolution in municipal government just as a young boy, William Carlos Williams, began his journey to become a beloved world-class poet. Rutherford is home to the oldest real estate business in the country as well as the cradle of one of the world's premier medical supply companies and New Jersey's largest private university. Beyond its extraordinary advances, Rutherford schools, churches, civic buildings, historic downtown, and simple homes nurtured a citizenry who wove a colorful quilt of social history and hometown dreams.

Download or read book The Making Of A Band written by G. Sean Gibson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music is a heavenly gift. It is one of the only gifts that transcends the barriers of language and creed. The inspirational and charismatic music of the Bahama Brass Band stirs a range of emotions from overwhelming peace and contentment to sheer bliss. The harmonic arrangements combined in the music of the Bahama Brass Band are the culmination of many influences; the most important being our heritage and faith in Almighty God. The world famous Bahama Brass Band was organized in 1925 by four ministers of the Gospel namely; Bishop Hermis Ferguson, Bishop Alvin S. Moss, Bishop James R. Cooper, and Pastor Frank Cunningham. Today, with the combination of its Nassau and Grand Bahama segments, the membership exceeds 100. This band plays an important role in the ministry of the Church of God of Prophecy as evidenced by its performances at local and state conventions as well as the bi-annual worldwide General Assemblies. The late Bishop Stanley R. Ferguson, first colonial overseer prophesied that the day would come when this band would play before Kings and the Rulers of the earth. On July 10th, 1973 the prophecy was fulfilled during The Bahamas' Independence Celebrations. In attendance to witness the ministry of this band were; Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, representative for his mother Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Sir Roland Symonette, former premier of The Bahamas, Rt. Hon. Sir Lynden Pindling, prime minister of The Bahamas, prime ministers and government representatives of St. Lucia, Jamaica, Bermuda, St. Kitts, Grenada and thirty (30) Latin American countries.
