Book Biodiversity Conservation in Transboundary Protected Areas

Download or read book Biodiversity Conservation in Transboundary Protected Areas written by Office of Central Europe and Eurasia and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-10-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the increasing rate of species loss on a global scale and that neither pollution nor ecosystems respects political boundaries, cooperation on many different levels is required to conserve biodiversity. This volume uses four protected areas that Poland shares with its neighbors as case studies to explore opportunities to integrate science and management in transboundary protected areas in Central Europe for the conservation of biodiversity. Specific topics include biodiversity conservation theories and strategies, problems of wildlife management, and impacts of tourism and recreational use on protected areas.

Book British Columbia s Inland Rainforest

Download or read book British Columbia s Inland Rainforest written by Susan K. Stevenson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast temperate rainforests of coastal British Columbia are world renowned, but much less is known about the other rainforest located 500 kilometres inland along the western slopes of the interior mountains. The unique integration of continentality and humidity in this region favours the development of lush rainforest communities that incorporate both coastal and boreal elements. This book brings together, for the first time, a broad spectrum of information about the ecology, management, and conservation of this distinctive ecosystem. Accessibly written and generously illustrated, the chapters examine the physical, social, economic, and ecological dimensions of the rainforest. They also look at how the delicate balance of this ecosystem has been threatened by human use and climate change. In the past, governments encouraged the forest industry to clearcut the “decadent” old stands and replace them with rapidly growing young trees of other species. More recently, out of concern for the ecological consequences of such practices, researchers have begun to examine alternative management strategies. This book offers a vision that combines various strategies in order to balance the conservation of the inland rainforest as a fully functioning ecosystem with human use of its diverse resources.

Book Ergonomic Operational Working Aspects of Forest Machines

Download or read book Ergonomic Operational Working Aspects of Forest Machines written by Jiří Dvořák and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ergonomic forestry issues are extremely complex and multifaceted. The central questions in the ergonomics of forestry machines must also be applied in their development, design and construction processes. As such, it is essential to devote thorough attention to this issue and to carry out detailed analyses of all factors in order to determine the criteria and parameters of the optimal solution of the working conditions to create the relevant standards and regulations. This book is focused on the work of chainsaws and harvester technologies, as well as the suitable choice of work conditions regarding the ergonomic aspects of the whole cutting process by these machines. It deals with technical descriptions and provides an analysis of the technological techniques of the production process. The book also outlines the possibilities of field deployment of such machinery and investigates the workload of harvester and forwarder operators.

Book Trees Forested Landscapes and Grazing Animals

Download or read book Trees Forested Landscapes and Grazing Animals written by Ian D. Rotherham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive book, the critical components of the European landscape - forest, parkland, and other grazed landscapes with trees are addressed. The book considers the history of grazed treed landscapes, of large grazing herbivores in Europe, and the implications of the past in shaping our environment today and in the future. Debates on the types of anciently grazed landscapes in Europe, and what they tell us about past and present ecology, have been especially topical and controversial recently. This treatment brings the current discussions and the latest research to a much wider audience. The book breaks new ground in broadening the scope of wood-pasture and woodland research to address sites and ecologies that have previously been overlooked but which hold potential keys to understanding landscape dynamics. Eminent contributors, including Oliver Rackham and Frans Vera, present a text which addresses the importance of history in understanding the past landscape, and the relevance of historical ecology and landscape studies in providing a future vision.

Book Forest Vegetation of Northeast Asia

Download or read book Forest Vegetation of Northeast Asia written by Jirí Kolbek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two of us (Jifi Kolbek, Miroslav Sriltek) were working in North Korea on the Czech Slovak field expeditions of the early 1990s, we did not think initially of comparing our results with the vegetation of surrounding areas or of writing a book. Our efforts mainly involved observing and documenting the vegetation as completely as possible and initial recognition of vegetation units. At first we focused on the most obvious vegetation types, but eventually also any important types that we could discern. Later we focused more on forests, since almost ali of northeastern Asia has forest potential and forests stiH do form the landscape matrix in most areas. First we studied suburban woods and forests, most of which are strongly affected by human activities. Later, though, we also had chances to visit and study lovely mountain regions, including Myohyang-san, Kumgang-san, Su jang-san, and the high, especially beautiful Changbai-shan on the border between North Korea and China. The Changbai-shan is the highest mountain system in the Korean Peninsula, including the highest peak Paektu-san. We gradually changed our goal from an evaluation of forest data from North Korea to comparison with available field data and literature sources from comparable surrounding areas. These include South Korea, the Russian Far East, northeastern China (Manchuria), and northem Japan, including the Kuril Islands. Finally we decided to prepare a preliminary survey of the forest vegetation of the Russian Far East and eventually of aII of northeastem Asia, which would be published in English.
