Without ignoring these secondary areas, this study sets out to examine the central issue of Capuana's realism as critic and narrator, and to account for its moments of apparent inconsistency, its limitations and strengths in the course of a long career which until recently has tended to be treted in piecemeal fashion.In so doing it proceeds chronologically, relating Capuana's aims and achievements to the changing cultural context which conditioned them, and relying extensively on articles which have remained buried in the newspapers and journals of both Sicily and the Italian mainland to explore uninvestigated aspects of his critical meditation or to illuminate the areas of obscurity in his development as both critic and narrator.A close analysis of narrative texts has been a main instrument of enquiry in this work: though it aims primarily at an evaluation of Capuana, it also hopes to contribute to the understanding of the period in which he lived.

In examining this often controversial movement, Neoavanguardia's contributors include topics such as critical-theoretical debates, the crisis of literature as defined within the movement, and issues of gender in 1960s Italian art and literature. This important collection interrogates the arts as creative codes, their ability to question reality, and their capacity to survive. Elizabeth Leake focuses on twentieth-century Italian writers Guido Mor-selli, Amelia Rosselli, Cesare Pavese, and Primo Levi, examining personal correspondence, diaries, and obituaries along with popular and academic commemorative writings to elucidate the ramifications of the authors' suicides for their readership. She argues that authorial suicide points to the limitations of those critical stances that exclude the author from the practice of reading. In this innovative and accessible assessment of some of the key issues of authorship, Leake shows that in the aftermath of suicide, an author's life and death themselves become texts to be read.
