Download or read book Robert R Church Jr and the African American Political Struggle written by Darius J. Young and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Conference on African American Studies, Inc., C. Calvin Smith Book Award This volume highlights the little-known story of Robert R. Church Jr., the most prominent black Republican of the 1920s and 1930s. Tracing Church’s lifelong crusade to make race an important part of the national political conversation, Darius Young reveals how Church was critical to the formative years of the civil rights struggle. A member of the black elite in Memphis, Tennessee, Church was a banker, political mobilizer, and civil rights advocate who worked to create opportunities for the black community despite the notorious Democrat E. H. “Boss” Crump’s hold over Memphis politics. Spurred by the belief that the vote was the most pragmatic path to full citizenship in the United States, Church founded the Lincoln League of America, which advocated for the interests of black voters in over thirty states. He was instrumental in establishing the NAACP throughout the South as it investigated various incidents of racial violence in the Mississippi Delta. At the height of his influence, Church served as an advisor for Presidents Harding and Coolidge, generating greater participation of and recognition for African Americans in the Republican Party. Church’s life and career offer a window into the incremental, behind-the-scenes victories of black voters and leaders during the Jim Crow era that set the foundation for the more nationally visible civil rights movement to follow. Publication of the paperback edition made possible by a Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents to all those who are interested in the history of Anaesthesiology historical details and information on the development of anaesthesiology in Germany and the remarkable growth of our Society. At the founding session of the German Society of Anaesthesia in Munich on 10 April 1953 42 persons had signed the founding documents. Today about 12,000 anaesthetists are members of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, making the DGAI the biggest national society within ESA. Well known are the pioneering contributions of German scientists and surgeons to the development of general, regional and local anaesthesia during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. But less known outside Germany are the reasons for the delayed evolution of anaesthesiology as a specialty of its own in German medicine, far later than in the UK, Scandinavia or the USA. In this book you will find answers to this question and detailed information on the successful evolution of anaesthesiology especially at the Faculties of Medicine at German universities.
Download or read book You Can t Copy Tradition written by Hermann Weissgärber and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The horrors of World War I left a mark on all of Europe as well as on the United States of America. Within the political, intellectual and academic life the catchphrase of international good will established itself. This term, rather this vision, must not be ignored in the context of the birth hour of the Austro-American Institute of Education, when international education was still in its infancy. The institute ́s founder, Paul Leo Dengler, seized an opportunity presented to him at the end of 1925 – apparently just in time amidst the pioneering spirit following World War I – to propose and present his Amerika-Institut in Vienna to leaders of the Institute of International Education in New York. Eventually, in March of 1926 the Austro-American Institute of Education (AAIE) was founded in Vienna. The idea of a comprehensive history of the AAIE is to shed light on the evolvement of some of the most significant intellectual forces that have been shaping international cultural relations over the past century. Volume I of AAIE ́s history takes a close look at the activities, programs, key-players and the bilateral mission of Dengler‘s institute during the years 1926 –1971.
