Short games make it it quick and easy to study openings, tactics, traps and other essentials to improving your chess game!Ruy Lopez (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5), or Spanish Opening, is the most famous and popular of all chess openings and despite the extensive depth and length of opening analysis for over 450 years, it continues to be a popular opening among amateurs and grandmasters. Mastery of either side requires tactical alertness and strategic planning. Even today, chess masters quickly fall into traps and pitfalls arising from the Ruy Lopez. It is the task in this present volume to bring together these decisive short games (25 moves or less) of the Ruy Lopez from practical games. Here is a rich collection of over 600 such chess miniatures, with examples from chess kibitzers to grandmasters and world chess champions. These short games illustrate the swift punishment that follows from poor opening strategy or erroneous development. This instructive and entertaining collection of decisive miniature games will be of interest to any player who plays the Ruy Lopez or has to defend against it. Enjoy!

Book Miniatures in the Main Line Ruy Lopez

Download or read book Miniatures in the Main Line Ruy Lopez written by Carsten Hansen and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miniatures in the Ruy Lopez – Main Line Another Great Book in the "Miniatures in the..." Series! The lines covered in this book, the Ruy Lopez – Main Lines, arise (with a few exceptions for move order and such) after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0. The Ruy Lopez, or Spanish Opening if you like, is one of the oldest openings, named after a Spanish priest who first played it back in the 16th century. Needless to say, it has been played a few times since and remains a popular opening at all levels of play. Some of the lines are incredibly theoretical, but rather than burden you with a ton of theory in lines you will have limited chance of using in your own games, the emphasis is on the lines that are more likely to occur in your games. Those lines will be in chapters 3 and 4, the two longest chapters of the book. This book is by no means an all-encompassing theory work, which means that there is a lot of theory that is not discussed in the notes. This is of course intentional. The book is written to entertain and inspire. If you find some lines that you like, you are encouraged to dive deeper into those lines before using them in your own games. As for the games, they are typically between players with a rating of at least 2350 and often well more than that; you will find games between players rated above 2700 in this book. However, I have made some exceptions when a lower rated player beats a player rated above the magical 2350 number. To show the relative strength of the players, I have included the ELO rating of the players involved in the miniatures. A few games are of older date, but are otherwise as recent as 2015.

Book excerpt: This is the second of a new series of Chess Miniatures by Bill Wall. The King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4) is one of the oldest documented chess openings known. It has been popular for over 300 years. It is still appealing to aggressive and attacking players who like exciting open games. There are probably more chess traps and pitfalls in the King's Gambit than any other opening. Studying short games is a great way for beginners to grandmaster to learn and appreciate not just the openings but the different variations of that opening. This collection of over 600 King's Gambit miniatures in 25 moves or less illustrates how quickly opening mistakes can be made for both sides. He also includes rules of Chess and Chess Principles for novices.

Book excerpt: Over a quarter of a century ago, the first edition of this book (published in East Germany in 1981) was a huge best seller. Yet unfortunately it was never reprinted and it soon became a scarce collector's item. The reason: one of its co-authors, the chess trainer Gerhard Schmidt, left for the West. He thus became persona non grata in East Germany and the book was banned there. Despite the book's excellent qualities, which were acclaimed in chess circles, from then on its success could only be an underground one. However, the subject of the book is timeless and transcends frontiers, and so at last we have a new edition, fully revised by the original authors themselves to include modern games by world-class players such as Garry Kasparov, Vishy Anand, Vladimir Kramnik and Judit PÃ3lgar. The book explains, clearly, systematically and comprehensively, the strategy and tactics associated with the open file: how files are opened, blocked, occupied and exploited as roads along which to invade the enemy position. A brief introduction lays the theoretical foundations and is followed by carefully selected and organised material in the form of illustrative games, in all of which the open file is the dominant or deciding factor. In each game there is a pause at a key position where a clear verbal assessment is given; these assessments alone are of huge instructional value, since they do nothing less than teach the reader how strong chessplayers think: what to look for, how to assess, how to plan. The book benefits not only from Gerhard Schmidt's experience as a trainer but also from the huge knowledge and skill gained by Grandmaster Wolfgang Uhlmann during his long and successful career in top-class chess, which at one point brought him close to putably one of Germany's greatest ever Book jacket.

Book Improve Your Positional Chess

Download or read book Improve Your Positional Chess written by Carsten Hansen and published by Gambit Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout a game of chess, the players must constantly make judgements and decisions that cannot be determined simply by calculation. They must then rely on their positional judgement. Good positional skills are primarily developed by experience, but they can also be learnt. In this book, Carsten Hansen provides a wealth of advice and ideas that will help give readers a helping hand up to new levels of positional understanding. Paramount in this discussion is the player's need to weigh up positional elements at the board, and decide which are most important for the situation at hand. Topics include: the quest for weaknesses, "what is the initiative?", understanding imbalances, the relative value of the pieces, decisions regarding pawn-structures, structural weaknesses, and where and how to attack.

Book Queen s Gambit Accepted D20 29

Download or read book Queen s Gambit Accepted D20 29 written by Bill Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-11 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Queen's Gambit Accepted is one of the oldest openings. It comprises one of the chapters of the Göttingen manuscript, c.1490, the earliest known work devoted entirely to modern chess. Twenty of the today's top 50 chess players play the QGA. It's popularity has increased steadily over the last 20 years. After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4, Black yields the center and increases the scope and dynamics of every piece. This is an opening that gives the advantage to the stronger tactical player, There are numerous sacrifices on both sides. In open games such as the QGA, attention to tactics is a more effective alternative to memorizing long variations. This volume is indexed by ECO classification so that the reader can focus on his or her area of expertise. Each of these sections contains their own pitfalls and traps. It is more fruitful to study the tactics of an opening you might encounter as White or Black than to study the knight fork, pin or skewer, one tactic at a time. When the type of tactic is provided with the puzzle, it is already half solved. Study the more common tactics found within an opening you face and you will come away with an understanding of the real dynamics of the opening and pick up tactics you can already use. This is a collection of 436 chess puzzles culled from thousands of QGA miniatures where decisive positions are reached in 25 moves or less. They are chosen only if there is only one winning move, i.e. a move that results in a clear two pawn advantage or better. Where there is a mate puzzle, only one move by White or Black will result in a forced mate in that speci?c number of moves. Solutions are found at the end of the book along with illustrative variations in italics. All variations have been checked for accuracy and uniqueness by Houdini6, a grandmaster-rated chess engine. Each variation ends with '1-0' (White wins/Black resigns) or '0-1' (Black wins/White resigns).

Book excerpt: There was a time when the Kings Gambit was the favorite chess opening of every attacking player. In the glory days of Paul Morphy it was considered almost cowardly to play anything else. Legends such as Spassky and Bronstein kept the flame burning in the 20th century, but its popularity faded, as many players are wary of sacrificing a pawn for long-term compensation. There are honorable exceptions whose games prove that this ancient weapon can still draw blood: Morozevich, Short, Zvjaginsev and ex-US Champion Yury Shulman are world-class players who attack with the Kings Gambit.
