Book excerpt: On August 9, 1965, 53 men died in the impoverished hills of rural Arkansas. Their final breaths came in a government facility deep underground while their loved ones were at home expecting their return. The incident at Launch Complex 373-4 remains the deadliest accident to occur in a U.S. nuclear facility. The 53: Rituals, Grief, and a Titan II Missile Disaster analyzes the event. It looks at causes but more importantly at how the mishap has affected daughters and sons for nearly six decades. It gives new sociological insight on technological disasters and the sorrow following them. The book also details how surviving family members managed themselves and each other while benefiting from the support of friends and strangers. It describes how institutions blame the powerless, and how powerful organizations generate distrust and secondary trauma. With an analysis of the event and post-disaster life, their children share stories on what went wrong and how they keep moving forward.

Book Continuing Bonds

  • Author : Dennis Klass
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2014-05-12
  • ISBN : 1317763602
  • Pages : 388 pages

Download or read book Continuing Bonds written by Dennis Klass and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.

Book It s OK That You re Not OK

Download or read book It s OK That You re Not OK written by Megan Devine and published by Sounds True. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenging conventional wisdom on grief, a pioneering therapist offers a new resource for those experiencing loss When a painful loss or life-shattering event upends your world, here is the first thing to know: there is nothing wrong with grief. “Grief is simply love in its most wild and painful form,” says Megan Devine. “It is a natural and sane response to loss.” So, why does our culture treat grief like a disease to be cured as quickly as possible? In It’s OK That You’re Not OK, Megan Devine offers a profound new approach to both the experience of grief and the way we try to help others who have endured tragedy. Having experienced grief from both sides—as both a therapist and as a woman who witnessed the accidental drowning of her beloved partner—Megan writes with deep insight about the unspoken truths of loss, love, and healing. She debunks the culturally prescribed goal of returning to a normal, “happy” life, replacing it with a far healthier middle path, one that invites us to build a life alongside grief rather than seeking to overcome it. In this compelling and heartful book, you’ll learn: • Why well-meaning advice, therapy, and spiritual wisdom so often end up making it harder for people in grief • How challenging the myths of grief—doing away with stages, timetables, and unrealistic ideals about how grief should unfold—allows us to accept grief as a mystery to be honored instead of a problem to solve • Practical guidance for managing stress, improving sleep, and decreasing anxiety without trying to “fix” your pain • How to help the people you love—with essays to teach us the best skills, checklists, and suggestions for supporting and comforting others through the grieving process Many people who have suffered a loss feel judged, dismissed, and misunderstood by a culture that wants to “solve” grief. Megan writes, “Grief no more needs a solution than love needs a solution.” Through stories, research, life tips, and creative and mindfulness-based practices, she offers a unique guide through an experience we all must face—in our personal lives, in the lives of those we love, and in the wider world. It’s OK That You’re Not OK is a book for grieving people, those who love them, and all those seeking to love themselves—and each other—better.

Book Why Did I Come into This Room

Download or read book Why Did I Come into This Room written by Joan Lunden and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Did I Come into This Room? is a funny “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” for the aging woman. “I’m too old for Snapchat, but too young for Life Alert.” In her most candid and revealing book yet, acclaimed broadcast journalist and Baby Boomer Joan Lunden delves into the various phases of aging that leave many feeling uncomfortable, confused, and on edge. In her hilarious book, Lunden takes the dull and depressing out of aging, replacing it with wit and humor. After all, laughing is better than crying—unless it makes you pee! Whether you’re in your 40s, 50s, 60s, or more, this book is full of helpful information to embrace—or at least prepare for—the inevitable. Funny, captivating, and raw, no topic is off limits. Lunden goes where others fear to tread, openly talking about wrinkles and age spots (which Lunden insists are sunspots), expanding waistlines (no, you didn’t shrink your jeans), diminished energy (my get-up-and-go got up and went), weak pelvic floors (yes, we’re talking about leaking), hot flashes (they suck), disrupted sleep (the morning host is an expert on lack of sleep), changes in sex drive (oh yeah, she goes there), ageism (it exists and it pisses us off), and yes, the real reasons we suddenly find ourselves always searching for those car keys! Through her poignant and often laugh out loud funny personal experiences, Lunden candidly shares her anxieties and breakthroughs and how she’s coping with the realities of aging. She’s talking about the good, the bad and the ugly, elevating the conversation on topics often considered “taboo.” Why Did I Come into This Room? also explores the science of aging, including how it impacts the body and brain, while dispelling myths and revealing useful options to stave off the aging process as long as possible. Even more importantly, Lunden goes beyond the physical aspects of aging by closely examining the mental and emotional minefields that come with our advancing years. As she explores the value of asking ourselves important questions including, “Am I still relevant?”, “Do I have meaningful friendships?”, and “Am I leaving an impactful legacy?” Lunden also examines the freedom in “letting go,” the importance of managing stress, and how joy and a sense of purpose all play an impactful role in slowing the aging process. In a society where youth is revered and aging feared, Why Did I Come into This Room? is the long-awaited tell-it-like-it-is guide for women of all ages. As Lunden says, “Aging ain’t for sissies…you better be prepared.”

Book DON T YOU DARE GIVE UP ON GOD

Download or read book DON T YOU DARE GIVE UP ON GOD written by James Langston and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reminds the believer, the non-believer, the saint and the sinner that anytime we give up on God, we give up on His promises of peace. It is in the midst of life's trials and tribulations that we are awakened to the unmistakable truth that God forges the best parts of our lives in the furnace of difficulties and hardships. Sadly, this generation knows little, if anything about what happened at Azusa street, the First, Second or Third Great Awakenings, the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival, the Can Ridge Revival, nor do they recognize the names of Jonathan Edwards, Dwight L. Moody, Charles H. Spurgeon or Billy Sunday. We know nothing about prayer, or the affects that prayer has had on this nation for the past 232 years. Writer and philosopher George Santayana sums it best when he said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes. Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it".

Book The Big Bad Kahuna

Download or read book The Big Bad Kahuna written by Bukki Dosunmu and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is undeniable that the corporate world is very challenging and complex. It is constantly taking on a new shape and form in response to circumstances that are often beyond its control. Competition gets keener and chances grow slimmer as one moves up the pyramidal echelons of life. The wheat becomes separated from the chaff, and only the fittest (not necessarily the smartest) end up at the top. If merit is hardly the sole criterion for corporate success, however, then where lies the trump card? In The Big Bad Kahuna, Bukki has provided a great insight into the forces that rule the convoluted world of corporate entities. The book is a very interesting read for people who are eager to understand the internal struggles that shape the lives of individuals in the corporate world. In the book, readers will learn about survival and how it may change the way they see and think about that peculiar world and themselves for the rest of their lives.

Download or read book The Wings of Faith written by Lois Egowunma Usonwu and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The background to the Wings of Faith was introduced with a divine call through a dream in which the Lord mandated the writer to effectively share her faith in writing with testimonies of the several wonderful things the Lord has done in her life in response to her faith in Jesus Christ and her prayers and cries to God for help in every areas of her challenges from which she has found relevance and purpose in life, as referenced in Philemon 1:6?"That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus." The Wings of Faith is a catalogue of testimonies of my faith, testifying that since I gave my life to Christ through faith in the name of Jesus as the Son of God and as my Lord and personal Savior through confession and repentance and forsaking of my sins and baptism by immersion, daily reading, and studying of the Bible and prayer and fellowship with the brethren and faith in the word of God, which I communicate to God through prayer by the help of the Holy Spirit, my life has never been the same again. The Word of God that I pray with bears fruit, which results to testimonies. As a widow, God has shown me his faithfulness as the husband of the widow and as the father of the fatherless to my children. He has pleaded my case against opposition, defended the cause of my children, did not leave us as orphans but revealed things to come so as to warn us, relieved us of burdens, provided for us, healed us, intervened in very difficult situations and made ways of escape for us, helped us and sent helpers to us, raised us up from the dust, lifted us up from the ash heap, brought us out of darkness, and translated us into his marvelous light that we should show forth his praises. This is the praise of God, the testimony of Jesus, that he called us to bear fruits of testimony to bring glory to his name and encourage people who hear our testimonies to have faith in God by believing in the name of Jesus Christ, his Son, so that Jesus Christ in turn will draw them to the Father, who is pleased to give us the kingdom, that through faith in the name of Jesus, we might reign with him in his kingdom and live eternally to the glory of God.
