The Manasquan Inlet permanently reopened in 1931, ensuring Brielle's status as a center for recreational sportfishing. Anglers flocked to Brielle to participate in tournaments, party boat passengers drove "down the shore" to enjoy a day of fishing, and a fleet of sportfishing boats grew at the docks. The personalities and stories of individual anglers are as varied as the fleet of vessels, from the anonymous fishermen who fluked along the Manasquan River to Lou and Eugenie Marron, a husband and wife team whose record-setting swordfish catches in the late 1950s remain unbeaten today. Nancy K. Berlage addresses this omission with an insightful look at how bureau members put university science to work in agricultural and rural life at the local level, even while industrialization, and urbanization profoundly shifted the landscape of labor in the U.S. In Farmers Helping Farmers, Berlage explores how bureaus served as the locus of science-based agriculture for rural communities. Drawing on community bonds and culturally powerful metaphors to overcome skepticism, bureaus played a critical role in circulating knowledge grounded in the new disciplines of agricultural economics, rural sociology, home economics, veterinary medicine, child science, and public health. Beginning in 1918 he began to develop a light valve, a device for writing and reading sound using light patterns. Lee de Forest officially brought sound to film in 1919.
