Book excerpt: Academic geriatnclans are always looking for an improved objective, quantifiable measure of biological ageing in humans to replace that unphysiological and arbitrary scale 'years survived'. The MCQ may be the nearest we have come yet to achieving this Holy Grail. An individual's facility with the setting and answering of MCQs separates the medical genera tions more surely than years. I am only grateful I was educated in a less rigorous but perhaps more 'gentlemanly' era. If one appeared before an examiner neatly dressed with clean finger nails and the examination scripts were literate essays written in fountain pen then you were in - or so it seemed. For the past 20 years we have been evolving towards much more objective and rigorous assessment of knowledge and understanding of medicine of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This process has been exemplified by the evolution of what is now the seemingly ubiquitous MCQ. When initially presented as objective and quantifiable measures of clinical knowledge MCQs were the subject of scorn - how could they assess the art of medicine - the grey areas of clinical decision making? However they very rapidly overcame this antediluvian scepticism and I believe they have had an effect well beyond the limited area of competence measurement. They have induced or at the very least contributed to a shift towards a more rigorous, dare one say more scientific, approach to clinical medicine.

Book 300 Single Best Answers in Clinical Medicine

Download or read book 300 Single Best Answers in Clinical Medicine written by George Collins and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a question book that offers single best answers (SBA) to 300 questions related to topics in general medicine. In order to further enhance knowledge and understanding, detailed answers have been included. This book is designed as both a revision and learning aid, with questions being set in a mock-examination format which can be completed under timed conditions. The primary target audience of this book is clinical medical students who are revising for examinations. However, questions have been planned in a way that a fairly large secondary target audience will be reached as well. This includes students who are transitioning from pre-clinical to clinical. As recently qualified medical graduates who have had the option of both online and book-based questions, the authors feel that students often prefer a Single Best Answers book that aids them in advancing their medical knowledge rather than online question banks, which can often have very repetitive and one-dimensional questions. Having questions in paper format replicates examination conditions better than online question banks and, therefore, offers a more realistic revision experience. In addition, though SBAs are becoming increasingly more common as an examination style with medical schools, there are very few SBA question books available. As such, medical students will find this book highly useful in the preparation for their examinations.
