Book Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper Experiences and Observations of E N Woodcock the Noted Hunter and Trapper

Download or read book Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper Experiences and Observations of E N Woodcock the Noted Hunter and Trapper written by Eldred Woodcock and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the truest and best sportsmen that ever shouldered a gun, strung a snare or set a trap." -The Pennsylvania Sportsman In this heroic life story taking place in the Pennsylvania back country, the hunter-hero of this autobiography emerges as a stalwart figure, an exemplar of rugged individualism, independence, and physical prowess, drawing a marked contrast to today's prevalent culture of entitlement. Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper is a 1913 autobiography that contains a wealth of information on living in the wilderness in the interesting experiences and observations of Eldred Nathaniel Woodcock (1846-1917) during his fifty years of hunting and trapping. Writing from memory, Mr. Woodcock tells of incidents that happened during the fifty years (1855-1905) he spent camping, hunting, trapping and fishing in the wilderness of Northern Pennsylvania and several other states. Most of E. N. Woodcock's stories feature an interesting partner (who he sometimes refers to as "Pard"), and other local people who lived in the Potter County, Pennsylvania area. Many of the wild places where he made his camps are now State Parks and Forests. E. N. Woodcock tells his stories in plain language, about deer and bear hunting; trapping bear, wild cat, fox, marten, mink and muskrat; run-ins with porcupines and skunks; mishaps that happened to himself and his partners; and the everyday occurrences of camp life. He gives his opinion of state game laws and bounties, and his views on the need for conservation. The book also includes practical information on building cabins, camp fires and cooking, staying warm, finding bee hives, trap sets, building deadfalls, using baits, skinning, stretching and drying fur, tracking game, and types of guns and ammunition. In introducing the book, Woodcock writes: "I have hunted in many of the states of the Far West including the three Pacific States--California, Oregon and Washington. I killed my first panther or cougar in the mountains of Idaho on the headwaters of the Clearwater River. My first real experience in wolfing was in Southeastern Oregon. I met my greatest number of deer in Northwestern California. I have trapped of late years, in nearly all of the states east of the Mississippi river and also on the White River of Arkansas; also trapped bear and other fur bearing animals and hunted deer in Northern Michigan, also forty years ago.Another sport which I enjoyed was the "pigeon days." I have netted wild pigeons from the Adirondack Mountains in New York State to Indian Territory--now Oklahoma--trapping them in the states of Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, Pennsylvania and New York. My nature led me to the Trail and Trap line from early childhood and I have trapped bear and hunted deer in the mountains of Pennsylvania for more than 50 years--half a century." About the author: Eldred Nathaniel Woodcock was a famous hunter and trapper of Potter County, Pennsylvania. He wrote stories about his life and experiences which were published in the Hunter-Trader-Trapper Magazine between 1903 and 1913. His stories were compiled into a book titled Fifty Years a Hunter and Trapper, and published by A. R. Harding Publishing Company of St. Louis, Missouri in 1913. Eldred Woodcock was born August 30, 1846 in Lymansville, Potter County, Pennsylvania.

Book Tenth Legion

Download or read book Tenth Legion written by Tom Kelly and published by Tom Kelly, Inc.. This book was released on 2021 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tenth Legion has long been considered the greatest - and most hilarious - book on turkey hunting. Yet until now it was only available in a privately published edition. Many people who hunt turkeys do so with an attention to detail, a regard for strategy, tactics, and operations, and a disregard for personal comfort and convenience that ranks second only to war. As for all cultists, it never occurs to them that they may be anachronisms. Supremely unconscious of the rest of the world, blind and deaf to logic and reason, they walk along their different roads in step to the music of their different drums.

Book If You Didn t Bring Jerky What Did I Just Eat

Download or read book If You Didn t Bring Jerky What Did I Just Eat written by Bill Heavey and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious collection of essays dedicated to life in the great outdoors from Field & Stream’s acclaimed Sportsman’s Life columnist. For nearly a decade, Bill Heavey, an outdoorsman marooned in suburbia, has written the Sportsman’s Life column on the back page of Field & Stream, where he does for hunting and fishing what David Feherty does for golf and Lewis Grizzard did for the South. If You Didn’t Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat? is the first collection of Heavey’s sidesplitting observations on life as a hardcore (but often hapless) outdoorsman. Whether he’s hunting cougars in the desert, scheming to make his five-year-old daughter love fishing, or chronicling his father’s life through a succession of canine companions, Heavey brings his trademark wit to a wide-range of outdoor enthusiasms, running the gamut from elite expeditions to ordinary occupations. In turns hysterical and poignant, entertaining and educational, this is an irresistible addition to the collection of any avid outdoorsman—or any suburbanite intrigued by the call of the wild.

Book Hunting and Fishing in the New South

Download or read book Hunting and Fishing in the New South written by Scott E. Giltner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study re-examines the dynamics of race relations in the post–Civil War South from an altogether fresh perspective: field sports. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy white men from Southern cities and the industrial North traveled to the hunting and fishing lodges of the old Confederacy—escaping from the office to socialize among like-minded peers. These sportsmen depended on local black guides who knew the land and fishing holes and could ensure a successful outing. For whites, the ability to hunt and fish freely and employ black laborers became a conspicuous display of their wealth and social standing. But hunting and fishing had been a way of life for all Southerners—blacks included—since colonial times. After the war, African Americans used their mastery of these sports to enter into market activities normally denied people of color, thereby becoming more economically independent from their white employers. Whites came to view black participation in hunting and fishing as a serious threat to the South’s labor system. Scott E. Giltner shows how African-American freedom developed in this racially tense environment—how blacks' sense of competence and authority flourished in a Jim Crow setting. Giltner’s thorough research using slave narratives, sportsmen’s recollections, records of fish and game clubs, and sporting periodicals offers a unique perspective on the African-American struggle for independence from the end of the Civil War to the 1920s.
