Book Recreating Historic Dress

Download or read book Recreating Historic Dress written by Nancy E. Hills and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recreating Historic Dress: Clothing Gems from the Hereford Museum Clothing Collection, with Patterns compiles patterns and information for 25 never-before-published garments from the historic clothing collection at the Hereford Museum and Art Gallery Resource Centre, Hereford, UK. An accurate study of dress is dependent on the very close and careful examination of existing garments. Nancy Hills has conducted a detailed analysis of a range of garments, spanning the years 1755 through to 1954, carefully exploring what they can tell us and translating them into paper patterns. Each featured garment contains a detailed description, the pattern, historical context, and images of the full article of clothing and construction details from inside the garment. This book features an eclectic selection of clothing, including a comfortable 18th-century cotton caraco often worn for work, leisure, travel, or pregnancy, a simple cotton print dress worn in 1834 as a wedding dress, and two dresses, one from 1936 and one from 1954, that show a more elite pedigree, with their labels of popular London designers. This book will be of interest to experienced costume designers and technicians, cutters and drapers, intermediate students of theatrical costume design, and historical reenactors.

Download or read book Herefordshire Murders and Misdemeanours written by David Phelps and published by . This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herefordshire is still a largely rural and agricultural county, centred on the cathedral city of Hereford, but it has had infamous and bloody events in its past, including shocking murders and appalling crimes. From the only British solicitor to be hanged for murder to the still mysterious death of an architect who had a fanatical belief that his home had been the site of King Arthur' castle, the county is the repository of some dark and fascinating stories. Victims and perpetrators range from royalty to farm labourers, from the effects of drink to domestic abuse, slavery and social unrest to greed and jealousy. Tales in this book range through the centuries from the Anglo Saxon St Ethelbert and include an unburied corpse that caused a riot; William Spiggot, the Herefordshire highwayman; Herefordshire witches; Silver John, a respected healer whose hoard of silver lead to his death; the Hay poisoner - was he really guilty?; Burghill Court, when the butler really did do it; the tragedy of Edie Nicholls, killed while feeding the hens; the Leintwardine GP killed by a grieving husband; Cyril Barnes, when friendship turned to murder: Simon Dale and the riddle of King Arthur; who killed beloved sweet shop owner Granny Hill?; the Herefordshire hoard, when metal detectorists went bad, and much more. This collection of true-life crime stories gives a vivid insight into life in Herefordshire through the centuries. This book will fascinate anyone with an interest in the history of crime as well as those who want to know more about the history of this area.

Book The Long Twelfth Century View of the Anglo Saxon Past

Download or read book The Long Twelfth Century View of the Anglo Saxon Past written by Martin Brett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have long been interested in the extent to which the Anglo-Saxon past can be understood using material written, and produced, in the twelfth century; and simultaneously in the continued importance (or otherwise) of the Anglo-Saxon past in the generations following the Norman Conquest of England. In order to better understand these issues, this volume provides a series of essays that moves scholarship forward in two significant ways. Firstly, it scrutinises how the Anglo-Saxon past continued to be reused and recycled throughout the longue durée of the twelfth century, as opposed to the early decades that are usually covered. Secondly, by bringing together scholars who are experts in various different scholarly disciplines, the volume deals with a much broader range of historical, linguistic, legal, artistic, palaeographical and cultic evidence than has hitherto been the case. Divided into four main parts: The Anglo-Saxon Saints; Anglo-Saxon England in the Narrative of Britain; Anglo-Saxon Law and Charter; and Art-history and the French Vernacular, it scrutinises the majority of different genres of source material that are vital in any study of early medieval British history. In so doing the resultant volume will become a standard reference point for students and scholars alike interested in the ways in which the Anglo-Saxon past continued to be of importance and interest throughout the twelfth century.
