Book The Anthropomorphic Lens

Download or read book The Anthropomorphic Lens written by Walter Melion and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropomorphism – the projection of the human form onto the every aspect of the world – closely relates to early modern notions of analogy and microcosm. What had been construed in Antiquity as a ready metaphor for the order of creation was reworked into a complex system relating the human body to the body of the world. Numerous books and images - cosmological diagrams, illustrated treatises of botany and zoology, maps, alphabets, collections of ornaments, architectural essays – are entirely constructed on the anthropomorphic analogy. Exploring the complexities inherent in such work, the interdisciplinary essays in this volume address how the anthropomorphic model is fraught with contradictions and tensions, between magical and rational, speculative and practical thought. Contributors include Pamela Brekka, Anne-Laure van Bruaene, Ralph Dekoninck, Agnès Guiderdoni, Christopher P. Heuer, Sarah Kyle, Walter S. Melion, Christina Normore, Elizabeth Petcu, Bertrand Prevost, Bret Rothstein, Paul Smith, Miya Tokumitsu, Michel Weemans, and Elke Werner.

Book Parrots and Nightingales

Download or read book Parrots and Nightingales written by Sarah Kay and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The love songs of Occitan troubadours inspired a rich body of courtly lyric by poets working in neighboring languages. For Sarah Kay, these poets were nightingales, composing verse that is recognizable yet original. But troubadour poetry also circulated across Europe in a form that is less well known but was more transformative. Writers outside Occitania quoted troubadour songs word for word in their original language, then commented upon these excerpts as linguistic or poetic examples, as guides to conduct, and even as sources of theological insight. If troubadours and their poetic imitators were nightingales, these quotation artists were parrots, and their practices of excerption and repetition brought about changes in poetic subjectivity that would deeply affect the European canon. The first sustained study of the medieval tradition of troubadour quotation, Parrots and Nightingales examines texts produced along the arc of the northern Mediterranean—from Catalonia through southern France to northern Italy—through the thirteenth century and the first half of the fourteenth. Featuring extensive appendices of over a thousand troubadour passages that have been quoted or anthologized, Parrots and Nightingales traces how quotations influenced the works of grammarians, short story writers, biographers, encyclopedists, and not least, other poets including Dante and Petrarch. Kay explores the instability and fluidity of medieval textuality, revealing how the art of quotation affected the transmission of knowledge and transformed perceptions of desire from the "courtly love" of the Middle Ages to the more learned formulations that emerged in the Renaissance. Parrots and Nightingales deftly restores the medieval tradition of lyric quotation to visibility, persuasively arguing for its originality and influence as a literary strategy.

Book Martial Book IV

Download or read book Martial Book IV written by Rosario Moreno Soldevila and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive commentary on the fourth book of Martial's epigrams. The introduction discusses its date of publication, major themes (Domitian, literature, death), the arrangement and form of the epigrams, and some issues concerning the transmission of the text. Of special note is the author’s study of the structure of the book. The commentary, preceded by the Latin critical text and an English translation, aims to provide readers with as much pertinent information as possible to enable them to fully comprehend the epigrams. Attention is paid to style and literary tradition, as well as to realia. Both each individual epigram and the book as a whole are studied as finely accomplished works of art.

Book Quomodo Cantabimus Canticum

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Butler Cannata
  • Publisher : American Institute of Musicology, Gmbh
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Quomodo Cantabimus Canticum written by David Butler Cannata and published by American Institute of Musicology, Gmbh. This book was released on 2008 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Roesner forged a career in musicology that placed him at the forefront of the discipline. This collection of thirteen essays entitled Quomodo Cantabimus Canticum? taking its name from an important motet text in the Roman de Fauvel, and written and edited by a group of scholar friends and students, honors not only his rigorous scholarship but also the breadth of his interest and learning. Starting with Leofranc Holford-Strevens' rationale of how Roesner, as Gustave Reese's protégée and successor, had no choice but to be a Medievalist, Gabriela Ilnitchi Currie's discussion of Eriugenian song, and Susan Rankin's exposé on the making of Carolingian chant books, the anthology traverses a wide continuum of argument all of which underscores Roesner's particular interests--liturgy, chant, polyphony, authenticity, the dissemination of texts and ideas over the centuries, and things Parisian. Andreas Haug brings new perspectives to bear on Notker's Preface; and following Roesner's interest in all aspects of the Medieval and Renaissance eras, today's leading scholars--Rebecca Baltzer, Margaret Bent, Bonnie Blackburn, Susan Boynton, Michel Huglo, Karl Kügle, and Joshua Rifkin--reexamine previously accepted notions of time and space, terminology, and transmission within previously "explicit" texts and tropes. The collection comes full circle with Linda Correll Roesner's discussion of a Clara Schumann letter (Reese's wedding gift to the Roesner couple), and a return to Paris with David Cannata's investigation of Messiaen as Thomistic Christologist. The editors were resolute that Roesner provide his own bibliography! With every sentence, Quomodo Cantabimus Canticum? Essays in Honor of Edward H. Roesner, a compilation that can only begin to plumb Roesner's facility and relentless pursuit of precision in all areas of academic investigation, marvels "How Can We Sing the Song?"
