Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Fronts: On the Firing-Lines With English-French, Austrian, German and Russian Troops But what crime? (to this day I do not know what the word means.) Murder, perhaps, said Shep. They're advertising the finish of 'war Correspondents, ' old style. Maybe the reporter is harder to kill. He is apt to care little for messing with generals, or to pose as a tactician. He knows that one comes closer to the realities of war by mingling afoot with peasantry and troopers, than when convoyed by staff Officers and allowed to see only what they permit, to learn what they want him to know. He smiles at the pretensions of War Corre spondents, who ape military dress, soldiers' ways of conduct, and collect decorations. He wonders over the hullabaloo about making dodos of them. Book Lady Under Fire on the Western Front

Download or read book Lady Under Fire on the Western Front written by Andrew Hallam and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Britain went to war in 1914 many people rallied to the cause, determined to join the colors or be useful in some other way. Lady Dorothie Mary Evelyn Feilding was one of the latter. ‘Lady D spent almost three years on the Western Front in Belgium driving ambulances for the Munro Motor Ambulance Corps, an all-volunteer unit. During her time in Flanders her bravery was such that she received the Belgian Order of Leopold, the French Croix de Guerre and was the first woman to be awarded the British Military Medal. She wrote home to Newnham Paddox, near Rugby, almost daily. Her letters reflect the mundane, tragedy and horror of war and also the tensions of being a woman at the front contending with shells, gossip, funding, lice, vehicle maintenance and inconvenient marriage proposals. Though Dorothie was the daughter of an Earl and from a privileged upbringing she had an easy attitude that transcended social boundaries and that endeared her to all that she came in to contact with whether royalty or the ordinary fighting man.

Book Sundance Fire

Download or read book Sundance Fire written by Hal E. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sundance Fire on September 1, 1967, made a spectacular run of 16 miles in 9 hours and destroyed more than 50,000 acres. This run became the subject of a detailed research analysis of the environmental, topographic, and vegetation variables aimed at reconstructing and describing fire phenomena. This report details the fire's progress; discusses the fire's buildup in intensity, the fuel complex through which it traveled, the wind and other atmospheric variables affecting the fire's behavior; and describes the processes that probably account for the tree breakage and blowdown, the long-range spotting, and the subsidence of the fire's run.
