Book The Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel

Download or read book The Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel written by Matthias Henze and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2001 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthias Henze has prepared the editio princeps of the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel, a hitherto unknown apocalypse composed in the early seventh century A.D. in Syriac and preserved in a single manuscript only. Following an introduction to the Apocalypse, the book includes an edition of the Syriac text, an English translation, and a detailed commentary.Like the biblical Daniel on which it is closely modelled, the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel is an 'historical' apocalypse, i.e. it has two parts: the 'historical' first part relates the adventures of Daniel in midrashic form, from his deportation by Nebuchadnezzar until his return to Persia from Jerusalem which he visits with King Darius. Upon returning to Persia, Daniel has a sequence of apocalyptic visions which are recorded in the latter, eschatological part of the text and which describe the gradual unfolding of the end of time. The Syriac Apocalypse has preserved a number of motifs worth exploring: the messianic woes, the Gates of the North erected by Alexander the Great, a description of Antichrist's physiognomy, the Second Coming of Christ, and the new Jerusalem. Equally important, the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel bears testimony to the vibrant apocalyptic currency in Syriac Christianity.

Excerpt: ...quoted in it from the Book of Daniel. It would, however, be wrong to follow the reverse order, and to contend that, because certain symbols used in the Book of Daniel are employed in the Apocalypse, the symbols in Daniel ought to be regarded as depicting the same events. In discussing the meaning of the Book of Daniel with those who do not admit its authority, such a line of argument must be avoided. It must, however, be steadily borne in mind that the writer of the Apocalypse considered the fourth beast to be the Roman empire in some form or other, and the fact should not be ignored by a Christian commentator. Attention may, however, fairly be drawn to the fact 1 See Critical Commentary. that the body of the beast depicted in Apoc. xiii., which plainly represents nothing else than the fourth beast of Daniel, was of a composite character. Its body was like a leopard, its feet like a bear, its mouths for the beast in the Apocalypse had seven heads, and consequently seven mouths were like the mouth of a lion. It was thus a compound of the first three beasts of Daniel. Daniel does not describe the body of the fourth beast, further than to say that its teeth were of iron, and its claws of brass. The other details of the beast may be filled up from the Apocalypse, so long as no distinct argument is founded on those details. The four heads which the third beast possessed as it rose out of the sea were indicative of a characteristic belonging to that kingdom during the larger portion of its existence. Similarly, whatever the ten horns signify, they must be likewise characteristic of the fourth kingdom during the greater period of its existence. In Nebuchadnezzar's dream two distinct phases of the fourth kingdom are described. In the first, the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most prominent hallmarks of the late Prof. Hanan Eshel (1958–2010) were his generosity, passion, and integrative approach. The eighteen essays in this volume were selected by Prof. Eshel shortly before his untimely death, to be printed as a collection aimed at contextualizing the textual finds of the Dead Sea Scrolls within their archaeological settings and within the contours of contemporary scholarship. The Qumran texts that stand at the center of these articles are correlated with archaeological and geographic information and with a variety of textual sources including epigraphic evidence and, especially, the Hebrew Bible, Josephus, and rabbinic texts. The essays are organized according to the provenance of the discovered material, with sections devoted to the Damascus Documentand the scrolls from Caves 1, 3, 4, and 11, as well as a final more general chapter.Half of the essays have been previously published in English, while the other half have been translated from Hebrew here for the first time. The book includes essays that have been co-authored with Esther Eshel, Shlomit Kendi-Harel, Zeev Safrai, and John Strugnell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Daniel is a literary rich and complex story known for its apocalyptic style. Written in both Hebrew and Aramaic, the book begins with stories of Daniel and three Jewish young men Hananiah (Shadrach), Mishael (Meshach), and Azariah (Abednego) who are exiles among the remnant from Judea in Babylon in sixth century b.c.e. It ends with Daniel's visions and dreams about the Jewish community that offer comfort and encouragement as they endure persecution and hope for deliverance into God's kingdom. Newsom's commentary offers a fresh study of Daniel in its historical context. Newsom further analyzes Daniel from literary and theological perspectives. With her expert commentary, Newsom's study will be the definitive commentary on Daniel for many years to come. Book The Books of Daniel and Revelation Made Easy

Download or read book The Books of Daniel and Revelation Made Easy written by Warren Reid and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Revelation must be the most feared book of the Bible to read. Now you can read it with great delight for this book is written to help you, the reader to understand what your Father in heaven is revealing to you. God does not want His children to be ignorant of His plan for us. Neither does He want us to be ignorant of the things He has in store for us. He has said in Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”. Therefore, get knowledge and use that knowledge to defend yourself and help others. I have to confess that I know nothing about the things of God. I have to rely entirely upon the Holy Spirit to lead me into all truths. The thing that moved me to write about the books of Daniel and Revelation is that I know that they are hard books to understand, but I also know that God wants His people to understand for He has loved us all with an everlasting love. Warren Reid didn’t write this book because of his will. Rather, he wrote it because he was commissioned to do so by God. The Books of Daniel and Revelation Made Easy examines the twelve chapters of Daniel and twenty-two chapters of Revelation. Divided into two parts, it tackles the books in detail. The author answers questions such as: • What passages of the Bible should you think about time and time again? • Why did Daniel refuse to eat the king’s meat and the wine he provided for them? • Why is it so important to pray to the living and true God just as Daniel did? • How can we recognize when Satan is working through someone? The Lord is coming, but we must be able to recognize the man of sin before Christ comes. We must be resolved in our hearts that we will not yield to him, that we would rather choose death than to bow down and worship his image or take his mark. May the God of Heaven give us grace to stand for Him in the evil days—and may this book help light the path that leads to everlasting life.
