Book excerpt: In praise of the greatest job in the world... The right book at the right time: an impassioned defense of teachers and why we need them now more than ever. Teacher turned teacher’s advocate Taylor Mali inspired millions with his original poem “What Teachers Make,” a passionate and unforgettable response to a rich man at a dinner party who sneeringly asked him what teachers make. Mali’s sharp, funny, perceptive look at life in the classroom pays tribute to the joys of teaching…and explains why teachers are so vital to our society. What Teachers Make is a book that will be treasured and shared by every teacher in America—and everybody who’s ever loved or learned from one.

Book Do Teachers Make a Difference

Download or read book Do Teachers Make a Difference written by United States. Bureau of Educational Personnel Development and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays concerning recent research on pupil achievement focuses on the role of teachers. The papers served as the basis of discussions during a day-long conference in February, 1970, at the Office of Education. Topics included models of school effectiveness, teacher quality, teacher attitudes, and policy implications. While the state of research on the effects of teachers on pupil achievement is considered still primitive, a few tentative indicators are held to be emerging. From the papers in this collection, one is led to believe that schools can and do make a difference in the development of youth. Beyond this, it is thought that teachers are the single most important element in the school. The public policy implication is that more available resources must be devoted to the development of methods for recruiting, preparing, and utilizing quality educational personnel. It is held that the fact that great numbers of children are not learning to read and are not receiving other basic tools essential for productive living demands that ways to make teachers, administrators, and all educational personnel more effective be found.

Shows that teacher compensation lags that of workers with similar education and experience, as well as that of workers with comparable skill requirements, like accountants, reporters, registered nurses, computer programmers, clergy, personnel officers, and vocational counselors and inspectors. Finds that teachers' weekly wages have grown far more slowly than those for these comparable occupations; teacher wages have deteriorated about 14.8 percent since 1993 and by 12.0 percent since 1983 relative to comparable occupations.

Download or read book Teacherpreneurs written by Barnett Berry and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-12 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We need a bold new brand of teacher leadership that will create opportunities for teachers to practice, share, and grow their knowledge and expertise. This book is about "teacherpreneurs"—highly accomplished classroom teachers who blur the lines of distinction between those who teach in schools and those who lead them. These teacherpreneurs embody the concept that teachers can teach as well as lead the transformation of teaching and learning. It’s about empowering expert teachers who can buoy the image of teaching and enforce standards among their ranks while all along making sure that their colleagues as well as education policymakers and the public know what works best for students. The book follows a small group of teacherpreneurs in their first year. We join their journey toward becoming teacher leaders whose work is not defined by administrative fiat, but by their knowledge of students and drive to influence policies that allow them and their colleagues to teach more effectively. The authors trace the teacherpreneurs' steps—and their own—in the effort to determine what it means to define and execute the concept of "teacherpreneurism" in the face of tough demands and resistant organizational structures.
